I came to crunching to get away from the "points race".  I pick my projects primarily based on whether they work on causes I am interested in, and secondarily on supporting team efforts.  For now I am sticking with Malaria Control because I had to drop out of the points pillaging early due to heat, and in honor of Barbarossa/Urlauber, our top producer in Malaria Control.  It was a favorite of his because malaria was still an issue in one of his favorite vacation spots.  It must be pure coincidence that he came back just as I was thinking about him.

Came back  What happened? What did I miss that had him leave?? He is one of the reasons I got into folding... Well crud!

I'm sorry, my last post didn't come across the way I intended.  I was just trying to point out that different people optimize in different ways, and I ended up adding a negative connotation.  Everyone should optimize for whatever they want; I happen to optimize for medical projects and to support the team, but optimizing for badges or to maximize production are also valid choices that people can have fun with.

This first TZC that includes crunching is really going to be interesting; I don't see it so much as a points competition as an experiment to see what will happen when people have 100+ projects to choose from plus 4 different divisions to compete in.  As someone pointed out already (I think yodap but I apologize if it was someone else), BOINC points vary wildly between projects, so I think that it probably requires a more BOINC-Pentathlon-like contest where everyone runs the same projects to get a better measure of actual production.  I hope the TZC is more about fun, having an excuse to run all-out for a short period, bring the trash talk, do some tagging of other team's logos, and win "bragging rights".

As I recall, he had some major home renovations last fall that were going to interfere with his DC work, and he dropped off the radar (and forums) for a while.  I was just checking last week when we did Malaria Control and noticed that his last post was in January.  I'm happy to see that he is around even if he's not able to participate in folding or crunching.

Also...

I am pretty sure this does not need to be said, but for clarity...

We all come from different walks of life. Folding for the most part, it's only measuring stick is points or work units.

Crunching allows for WU's or Points or projects, or equipment preference or even a combination of all of those. It allows more walks of life to find what is important to them, and helps keep them motivated or driven.

"That" is what this is all about measuring stick wise. As long as we embrace each others preferred methods, and it is reciprocated. This team will continue to grow, flourish and be a fun place to call our community.

Everything we do is a celebration because those that are here, truly get it. Thank you all for what you do. And as always... Let's kill whatever ails us!

Looks good to me Punchy. The only ones not showing are the mathematics projects I started testing yesterday. And Sztaki isn't showing on Free-DC yet anyway.

I signed up for the challenge, will i need to do anything special on the start date? i'm curently working on the projects i will during the challenge. Also on an unrelated note is the prime grid challenge a team contest or a personal one?

Nope, there is nothing additional you will need to do. We tried to set it up so you could just keep on doing what you are doing without any changes. Of course, if you do a little extra work here and there, it is even better and helps your team out.

As for the primegrid challenge, it is unrelated to us, and I believe it is set up by the PrimeGrid team themselves. The work your do will go towards your team's ranking (evga), as well as your individual rankings. I have not taken place in a PrimeGrid challenge before, so someone else may be able to explain it more thoroughly.

I've been waiting for Michael Goetz to update the http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=5617 page. We are only 7 days from starting.

Our team has been participating in these challenges that Primegrid runs, for a few years now. It's open to any team that wants to participate. Basically if you run the proper project, in this case (Proth Prime Search (LLR))CPU only, and have joined our team, you will be in. This project runs short wu's very well and cool with my OC's in tact. Seems like a perfect fit for the Multi P guys. Of course you should try a few on your own rigs first. I'll be all in for the 3 days.
Note the weird start time:  Apr 20 16:16 to Apr 23 16:16 (UTC). Any work units downloaded before that time will not count towards the challenge.

I'll start a new thread when the PG post is updated. Please post here or in the new thread when it's up, if you have any questions.

Now that TZC are closing fast, this msg wasn't what I was hoping for:

4/16/2014 1:33:54 PM | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for Short runs (2-3 hours on fastest card)
4/16/2014 1:33:54 PM | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for Long runs (8-12 hours on fastest card)
4/16/2014 1:33:54 PM | GPUGRID | No tasks are available for the applications you have selected.

Hope this won't last.

Yeah, I got the same thing from GPU grid. I have moved over to running Seti GPU tasks for now.

I wish some of the other Bio Medical projects would get GPU tasks up and running. Actually WCG needs to get their thumb out and find a project that uses GPU's. I need to work on my compute time and score for WCG but keep putting it off because of the long run times for their tasks. That and waiting for a week or more to get completed tasks validated at WCG.

It's a shame, WCG did have a nice cancer project using GPUs for a while, but it ran its course, and so far no other researchers have been interested in creating another.

I am hoping the slow validation at WCG will improve when the Ripple Labs giveaway ends this month.  A big problem is the "miners" that purchase "spot instances" of compute power that they can lose at any time by being outbid, and not shutting down cleanly and aborting any queued/incomplete WUs.  Then those have to timeout and get resent later, delaying validation for people that run the way it should be run.
