Since they know what we're looking for and avoiding, MS might try sneaking multipurpose updates disguised as Security Updates. Just a thought. I get so few of them lately I thought I might share it with the community. lol

It's getting very hard to distinguish WHAT Updates you need to remove.

Just for an Example, A few days ago along with 10 "Security Updates", I received This "Diagnostic Telemetry" Update that was included with 5 other "Important Updates" , although Microsoft states it Should only be able to be installed as an "Optional Update".

Microsoft
KB3080149
Update for customer experience and diagnostic telemetry
This article describes an update for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Before you install this update, check out the Prerequisites section.
About this update
This package updates the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service to existing devices. This service provides benefits from the latest version of Windows to systems that have not yet upgraded. The update also supports applications that are subscribed to Visual Studio Application Insights.
About the Diagnostics Tracking service
Helping the overall application experience
The diagnostics tracking service collects diagnostics about functional issues on Windows systems that participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP). CEIP reports do not contain contact information, such as your name, address, or telephone number. This means CEIP will not ask you to participate in surveys or to read junk email, and you will not be contacted in any other way.

For any released product with an option to participate in CEIP, you can select to start or stop participating at any time. Most programs make CEIP options available on the Help menu, although for some products, you might have to check settings, options, or preferences menus. Some pre-released products that are under development might require participation in CEIP to help ensure that the final release of the product improves frequently used features and solves common problems that exist in the pre-released software.
Additional information
The included service uses SSL (TCP Port 443) to download manifests and upload data to Microsoft when data is available for upload. The service uses the following DNS endpoints:
vortex-win.data.microsoft.com
settings-win.data.microsoft.com
This update contains the following two manifests that are occasionally updated by the Diagnostic Tracking Service:
telemetry.ASM-WindowsDefault.json
utc.app.json

Included in this update:
Fixes a previous issue in the Diagnostics Tracking Service where when an advanced user applied the System File Checker Tool (sfc.exe), the .json files were unintentionally flagged as corrupt. This unintentional marking didn’t affect or indicate actual corruption on a device, and after you apply this update the files should no longer be marked as corrupt.
Reduces the network connections on a Windows system that doesn’t participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP).
Fixes an occasional event decoding issue in the Trace Data Helper (TDH) TdhGetEventInformation function that caused Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) events created by using the .NET Framework 4.6 or ILoggingChannel Interface to decode incorrectly.

How to obtain this update:
Important If you install a language pack after you install this update, you must reinstall this update. Therefore, we recommend that you install any language packs that you need before you install this update. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.
Method 1: Windows Update

This update is provided as an Optional update on Windows Update*

I haven't updated my windows 10 since I installed it. Been running just fine.

I'm mainly just checking the Windows 7 updates that I have been running for Years on my second PC and two Laptops for these recent "Diagnostic Telemetry" updates.

Windows 10 is on it's own separate SSD and has been Constantly Automatically updating since it was installed in October 2014 using the Windows 10 Insider Testing Program I was/am involved in.

My Main Benching Rig uses Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 Pro OS's, But they are all on their own separate SSD's that I connect/disconnect and run one at a time and are NEVER connected together to the MB whether I'm running Benchmarks, Updating or other programs.

I've also had some strange things happen in the past where I have connected a few Windows 7 SSD's and have them operate together along with either a Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 SSD at the same time and then at some future date try to remove that Windows 8.1 or 10 SSD from the System without somehow messing up my other Windows 7 SSD's to the point they won't even Boot!

...It Could just be me, But I am inclined to think not....

I got two optional updates this morning and one looks like a telemetry update. KB2999226 is a universal C Runtime update:

"The Windows 10 Universal CRT is a Windows operating system component that enables CRT functionality on the Windows operating system. This update allows Windows desktop applications that depend on the Windows 10 Universal CRT release to run on earlier Windows operating systems."

The other optional item was KB3080079 I believe.  It has to do with Remote desktop services which I have no need for.  So I hid that one also.

It sounds like a plan. I have no need for Remote Desktop Services either. It would just give Microsoft another way to sneak up on me and stick their foot in the back door when I'm not looking.

This is actually adding TLS to the Remote Desktop client which is resident on your Windows 7/8/8.1 system in order to connect to a Microsoft Terminal Server 2008/2008R2/2012 system. Not something that would be used to invade your privacy as it's a client you need to initiate, not something resident in your background and does not relate to your remote assistance.

It is just the last C Runtime Library distributables. It comes with Visual C++ (VCREDIST), and sources are public as part of Visual Studio. It implements the most basic and lower level C functions. It has nothing to do with telemetry. These DLLs are needed for applications compiled with the "shared libraries" option. Most apps are compiled with this option and absolutely need them. Chances are you will have problems as soon as you will attempt to run a program compiled with  Visual C++ / Visual Studio 2015. Or they will get installed by the app installer if the programmer included them with its install package.

Hiding KB2999226 is of no interest.

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????

That's what's nice about Win updates in OS's prior to Win10.  You actually have a choice to install or not...  I saw no need to install this on my Win7 OS so I hid it.

Here is something that is most likely not very useful unless you are running in a more corporate environment. Just hide update KB3079821 as it only is necessary if you are using Windows 7 for a KMS server. The basics of this is to use the Windows 7 system for authentication and key management for Windows 10 systems. Not at all useful for home users unless you have a homelab setup.

There has been a few updates that I haven't installed, but not the type I would add to that list.  What I put on my list are telemetry updates and/or updates pertaining to upgrading a Win7 OS to Win10 which I'll never do.

I'll keep the list updated & posted here if MS pushes anymore of these types of updates...

I don't recall this one.  I'll have to check to see if I installed it.  It sounds like a harmless one in either case.  Thanks James...

Is anyone else having problems when shutting down Windows? Since I installed KB3083710 whenever I shut down I get a window saying that Windows is waiting for something to close but the box is empty. I'm not sure it's that update that is causing it because I haven't uninstalled it yet but that's when the minor issue started for me. I'm waiting for today's updates to see what Microsoft has in store for me this month. Maybe one of the new updates will fix it.

I'm not specifically having that issue even with the update in question. I'll take a look and see what/if anything has been changed from the KB since it's initial release. I think this is a refresh release of that particular KB.

The issue was resolved after yesterday's updates. There were two updates I installed, the last two in the list, that had no information available. When I clicked the link to go to Microsoft I got a Error 404 not found message from the Microsoft library. The rest looked OK to me. I had six for my main PC and my G3258 backup PC while my laptop got eight of them.

I had a few which were updates to Office and some security updates. Most of the others I went ahead and hid if they weren't for something particular that I was using or needed for the future.

Here's my accumulated (do not install) list from last fall.  Some of these are related to upgrading your Win7/8.1 to Win10 and some are tracking (telemetry) installs.

KB3035583
KB2952664
KB2976978
KB2990214
KB3068708
KB3022345
KB2952264
KB3021917
KB3050265
KB2977759
KB3065987
KB3075851
KB3075249
KB3080149
KB3044374

I got a fresh one this morning that was released yesterday, KB3112343. Bulletin states:

"This update enables support for additional upgrade scenarios from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and provides a smoother experience when you have to retry an operating system upgrade because of certain failure conditions. This update also improves the ability of Microsoft to monitor the quality of the upgrade experience."

Reference: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343
Promptly hid it and continued my day.

I can think of a lot of words to describe my upgrade experiences and 'quality' isn't one of them.

OMG, KB3035583 came back again this morning. I hid it once again. This thing is like a Zombie. It keeps coming back from the dead to haunt me.

So far, I have been using GWX stopper and have turned updates off on my Windows 7 systems and they have been mostly ok. My Windows 10 laptop also keeps getting KB3035583 update. There are a few things I actually like about Windows 10 but so far, I prefer 7. There are some strange behaviors I have had with 10 and it's more work to make it how I like it than it is really worth.

Yeah, I saw that one pushed again and in the "Recommended" section this time.  Anyone with updates set to auto will get it installed without knowing.  I think I've hid that one 3 or 4 times now this year.
