I have 2 1070 FTW's ordered on 7/09 and 7/12, both have samsung memory, I already know about the thermal pad issue, but what is this issue about cards having VRM issues from bad batches before 8/30? Is there anyway to know what batch was bad?

It has been officially stated that 1070s aren't affected by that. Only 3-4% of the 1080 FTWs shipped before August 31st had issues with bad VRMs.

    Intel i5 4690K@4.4Ghz | MSI Z97 Gaming 5 | EVGA GTX1070 FTW replaced by a MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X | G.Skill RipJawsX 8GB 1866Mhz | Corsair CS650M | Thermalright Macho | NZXT S340

Was it just the versions using Micron memory?

Yep, that's pretty much the only "issue" that affected all vendor 1070s. And it's been corrected with the new bios EVGA and some other vendors released.
