Hi guys just need a little help here I bought the x79 Dark w/ Bluetooth and when I built the PC originally I installed Windows 10 beta I know that was a mistake to do since I should've had a working OS instead. Now that I am trying to install Windows 7 64bit for the life of me I can't I continue to get a message saying something about needing a media drive of some sort. I have tried looking online for info and how to fix this issue and I have had no luck. I believe it's something to do with the way the motherboards bios is locked or something. If anyone can help me that would be awesome. Thanks in advance any questions I can answer just ask.

I too installed the Windows 10 beta for a trial test for Microsoft. And now i'm back to Windows 7 64bit without any issue. Did you do a clean install ?

OK first of all if you want to wipe and do a clean install then in the BIOs change the hard drive boot order for the first hard drive or SSD you wish to use. For the actual boot order if you are installing from a CD/DVD make that item your first bootable item. Make a UEFI drive the second. If using a bootable USB stick then that would be first. Once you start the PC with the bootable media (USB stick or DVD) then that should start up. Eventually you'll get to the screen where you have to choose a hard drive or SSD from which to install the O/S. Choose the drive and if it tells you it can't use it then you'll need to delete that partition and any minor boot partitions (recovery) that are associated with it. Once you delete that and the minor partitions format the drive. Then choose to install.

I had a hell of a time installing ANY Windows version, with the "please load drivers" problem before you can choose an install drive, until I found that I COULD NOT have the DVD/Blu-ray drive on a different controller as the install drive (aka, it HAD to be Intel ports for both). I've tried it now with two different Blu-ray players and two different DVD players all of different manufacture and they all exhibit the same problem. The messed up thing is that the Blu-ray players have both completely stopped working only a few months after purchase, and with almost 0 use save for Windows installs, on the X79 Dark. The good news is that you can use a USB DVD/Blu-ray player on the USB2 ports to install windows, which is exactly what I have done.

I found this out after troubleshooting for hours, as well as being on the phone for a couple hours with EVGA Tech Support. This issue hasn't been fixed, and since it has been over a year it probably never will be. It's sad, but that's just how EVGA works now - which is why I won't be buying another motherboard from them. Burned by the original X79, and burned by the X79 Dark.

Seems that you may need to learn a little more about installing an OS.
Their are good ways and bad ways to install and setup a custom motherboard it is not like having a Dell Computer and you really cannot make any real changes on the in side of a Dell Computer.
I have had no issues with any of the EVGA Motherboards and Windows 7, 8, or even 10.

Simple install 1 SSD on the Intel SATA III/6G Port 0 and 1 CD/DVD/Blu-ray on SATA II/3G Port 0 and never had an issue.

Insulting someone because their rig doesn't work is bad form. And I did RMA it and the new one has the exact same issue.

Also, I run "RAID" 0 on 2 SSDs, which is why yours always works and mine doesn't. I know, I've gotten it to work just fine and dandy in ACHI mode with one SSD. Try it out my way and see for yourself.

My sentiment stands - no more EVGA motherboards for me.

"Seems that you may need to learn a little more about installing an OS." This is not Insulting you, sorry that you took it this way.
It was no different for me when I went from the Old ISA and EISA Motherboards back when you have to set the jumpers to an I/O address and IRQ address.

As far as a Raid setup would go for me I would not use the motherboard raid but would by a raid card with 256mb of cache memory as I do when I build a server rig.

For what it's worth, when I did my first Dark build, I actually ran RAID1 on the boot drives (not getting into the why's and wherefores currently) W10 detected it without issue, Windows7 on the Intel ports needed a driver, I used the drivers form the download on our site and put it on a thumb drive and it worked fine.

@Arestavo if you still have the board and still need RAID0 I will do what I can to assist in getting it up and running.

Thanks DaveB, but it just won't work. I've moved on and content myself with using a USB2 DVD drive or thumb drive to do my OS installations now.

I'm not understanding the actual problem here. So... you get this "please install drivers" while you're installing windows on the computer? When you come to this point, you're not even in the windows yet. Is there any way you can elaborate a little more on the process/error you're getting? All you should have to do is plug the dvd/blu ray drive in the appropriate Sata port. You might have to set the blu ray drive in the appropriate sequence. Try moving the dvd drive to priority 1, and then the HDD to priority 2.

Please provide any other details if you can.

I know it is an old thread...

X79 comes woth C600 chipset, and drivers are not included with Windows 7 distribution (but they are with 8 and 10 AFAIK). It needs a "F6" installation !

All you need is a USB stick with drivers on it, and load these drivers when prompted to ("Load additionnal drivers" button).

Dowlnload "RAID_VER20140224" from Intel servers, and load C600 drivers. If RAID is set in BIOS, AFAIR, the DVD cannot be accessed from pre installation environment.

I use IRSTe (what C600 is intended for). I don't use DVD install, but a USB stick install. Get Windows7-USB-DVD-tool to create this USB stick from the DVD. I also put a directory with Intel drivers on it. The drivers are also needed for tools using Preinstallation  Environment (boot disks for HDD utilities such as Easy Todo Backup or Partition Magic), and even for Windows 7 repair tools in advanceed boot options.

People just forgot how they had to install RAID, SCSI and and no so exotic devices in the older times (Windows NT3.1, 4.0...). It was very common ! "Press F6 to install additional drivers". This is why we call this a "F6" install, even with GUI install environment. But the devices came with drivers on a floppy...

    Hope this could help.

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????

Eh, if you were referencing my issue - loading RAID drivers from the Dark's driver disk, or from EVGA's website, doesn't work. Trust me, I went up and down trying to make it work with EVGA's tech support - even so far as to RMA the board (which didn't help either).

Hope the RMA will solve your problem.

I had a look to drivers on EVGA website. They are completely out of date.

    EVGA : "X79_RAID driver Ver.3.0.0.3011.zip" (12/02/2011)

Intel : "RSTe_and_AHCI_Drivers_GUI_CIM_CLI_3.8.0.1111_2013.10.03.zip" (made a mistake with the archive name in my previous post). This is what I use. RAID10 on SATA2 ports, but no RAID0 on the SATA3 ones (1x SSD + 1x DVD). I will give it a try in a couple of weeks (got a 2nd SSD)...

There is also "Intel RSTe 4.1 GD Windows package.zip" on Intel website, it is intended for Windows Server 2012 (according to Intel website). But some use it for Seven... I did'nt try. In fact, there is a "Win7_2k8" folder in the archive, and iaStorA.inf is dated 05/07/2014. The archive comes with a warning saying not to use drivers from 8, 8.1, Server 2k12, Server 2k12R2 DVDs.

There is also this : "The drivers are ONLY intended to be installed to a single pas through drive. They are not intented to be installed on a RAID volume". I don't know if this means that RSTe cannot be installed on a system RAID drive, nor it is for the 4.xx version only. Nevertheless, these setups work flawlessly for me :

    sig 1 : multiboot
SSD Intel SATA port #1 : Win 7, boot drive, MBR (and legacy BIOS BTW)
       DVD Intel SATA port #2
Intel SATA ports #3,4,5,6 RAID0 (1st volume ) : Win 7 (MBR), but bootloader is on SSD !
Intel SATA ports #3,4,5,7 RAID10 (2st volume) : Data (GPT)

    sig 2 : multiboot
SSD Intel SATA port #1 : Win7, boot drive (MBR)
       DVD Intel SATA port #2
Intel SATA ports #3,4,5,6 RAID10 : Data (GPT)
       MARVEL SATA ports #8,9 RAID0 : Win7

There is few information about RSTe, and it is often unclear.

why make it simple when it can be complicated ????
