So with this disaster by EVGA is the thermal pads and new bios they are installing and recommending people get the REAL solution to the problem? Or is this just a temporary cover up? I would be absolutely furious if my card blew again

no cover up from EVGA, they were kinda spot on the ball with pads and bios, yes it has taken down my temps, keeping my voltage up 1.094-1.081 compaired to it drop to 1.051 without pad and bios, BUT... these cards need waterblocked pure and simple and anything else is just a band aid

The best (impartial) news I can give you is that evga has your back. The best (fanboy'ish) news I can give you is that , you were unlucky the first time round, the bios & pads are only simple upgrades to an otherwise quality card, everything is working within spec, every manufacturer has a similar fail rate, people moaning should stop because were talking about a handful of cards that have failed and evga are the best when it comes to customer service. The best (doomsayer) news I can give you is buy a fire extinguisher if you own one already, buy any other brand but evga if you are contemplating a 10 series card, there service is no better that anyone else's and they are linked with global warming.

The resistors that keep failing have failed in the past on other cards and on other brands to include many AMD cards. This didnt require heat to have a failure. It happens.

I won't be doing the bio update on my GTX1080 FTW, not sure if i will install the thermal pads. When i registered my card, i extended the warranty to 5 years, so why not see what happens.

It seems that there is more than just overheating, thermal pads and bios will or might fixed things temporarily but I hate to say, just a matter of time I'm sure it will happen again. The 10 series cards are not the best of generation, even thou they are less power consumption and the clocks are higher but there is more failing of them among users everywhere. My nephew just got 2x 1080 founders (blower style) on November 2nd, both are gone within 3 days, something have burned on them during you tube videos so it's not only FTW cards, he RMA both of them, but this is the first time he ever had 2 cards failing on him at once and worst part, they literally smoked . He put his 2 Titan Blacks back on for now and its all good and as soon as he gets replacement cards he is selling them and not even looking back on this gen of cards.

I don't know. I now have (finally) a FTW 1080 with good TIM (MX-4), and all the thermal pads in place. Everything seems to be going good now, and the card is running very cool. No issues. The only thing that is gnawing in the back of my mind is resale value. The depreciation for graphics cards after a new gen comes out is already bad enough. But to have a card that had some possible heat issues, well I'm betting I end up keeping this 1080 for a LONG time, because its going to be a hard sell to someone used. But all in all, I still like EVGA as a company, and I am happy right now with my card.

I truly hope this doesn't happen again when I get my card back.

IMO the thermal pad, especially the VRAM chips thicker pads are a good fix. I did it quite a while ago with my own stuff. As for the new BIOS, I like it, I always have liked moderately aggressive fan curves so I'll keep it. But, IMO it's not a fix by itself. Those memory modules need proper heat plate contact cooling. Non of mine were touching anything! So please don't consider only the BIOS change as a fix. May help, but largely irrelevant if a card is like mine. I know some people will have proper contact, but I didn't. Purely my opinion and findings relating to my particular card. Not looking for any kind of flame argument.

What you say is fair enough, I have nothing to say about it. But one thing, different issue, many people I believe assume you at least have some connection with EVGA. I did too at first. Not sure what you can do about it, but at a glance your left hand side info does seem to be EVGA. After looking properly, it's obvious you are a mod only, but how many people look carefully?

Yep, that was a very clear option from the beginning. Good and safe to take advantage of it. I did it myself because I don't want to be without a card, and have done a fair bit of PC building already so had confidence to do it properly. (Seem to work like a charm.) Even after all of this, which is sure to hit EVGAs bottom line for this gen., I have lost no confidence in EVGA or their famous customer service. I would purchase from them again.

I have provided in many threads that if you google GPU caught fire, you can see the resistors fail on many brands and fail in spectacular form. It seems that some people dont want to hear that though, no matter what position a user holds on a user based forum. All of the information I have been providing comes from simple google searches.
The only EVGA representatives have the title EVGATech_name*, anyone else is a user that volunteers their time to help out. No user has to look past the user name itself. After a certain amount of posts, users are allowed to have whatever title they want under their name, as long as EVGA approves their requested title. If the user name doesnt say EVGATech, and then their first name, then it isnt an evga employee.

About your first paragraph, yep, totally agree with you. A lot of drama makers around! Second point, that's fair enough and I fully understand. My point was that new members could easily assume you are working/representing EVGA in some way. I guess it's human nature, but anyone who stays with these forums for even a short time will come to see you are a moderator. Period. No big deal at all really, and doesn't affect me. Also there is nothing really to do about it. I just thought it worth pointing out, because in other threads not a few people have replied to your posts, rather unpleasantly at times, and it's clear they have the wrong idea. I mean they wacked out a post before thinking or looking properly and just "assumed," you were representing EVGA. I only mentioned it because I've seen it. Nothing negative intended. You do a good job as mod IMO.

EVGA has a reputation for being better than other companies. Using an argument of " other component makers' cards fail in spectacular form so this is a non-issue" is annoying and entirely misses the point. Computer parts and other electronics do fail, but it's still not acceptable when a few months old. How the company responds to the issue is paramount. If my washing machine starting sparking and damaged other kitchen components, I would hope the manufacturer would fully rectify the matter. Failing that, the family solicitor would receive instructions to pursue damages from the company where possible.

Please, please, please, show me where i said it is a non issue.. i beg of you. You cant. Because i didnt. I said it happens with other manufacturers. I never once said it was a nonissue. At most, i specifically said i dont think it is toed to overheating, since it happens on card from other manufacturers. If failures didnt happen, manufacturers wouldn't need warranties. Over on the msi forums, there still sits an unanswered post after a card caught on fire... unlike EVGA forums where they try to help when it happens. Now, please read my posts rather than assuming i said something that i didnt.

I think it's a band-aid, not a fix. There's still real concern that heat related issues will emerge when not running in ideal settings (which all the tests have been conducted in). If your room has a little bit higher ambient temp than they did in the tests, your card might run out of spec. If you run an SLI setup, your cards might run out of spec. If you have a front radiator or less than optimal case airflow, your cards might run out of spec. These are all situations that will likely cause these cards to fail sooner rather than later regardless of this "fix" that EVGA is offering. The underlying fact is that EVGA 10 series cards are extremely poorly designed. Consumers now recognize EVGA is not what they used to be and will plan their future purchases accordingly.

Your opinion is based on speculation and I don't agree. If you objectively look at what you said, all video cards are subject to that. The end user is still responsible for the conditions of it's use. IMO I think EVGA is making good on the pad recall. Calling out EVGA on issues that are not subject to only EVGA products is uncalled for IMO, if that is what's being implied. Your underlying fact has no conclusive evidence for me to form my own opinion here, it's just a trolls comment.

When some people see Moderator or EGC Admin title, they think it's coming from EVGA corporation. EVGA warns moderators and EGC Admins about that in the Code of Conduct, they require volunteers to sign and agree to follow.

First of all i dont hang around these forums and know peoples names etc. Your forum title says EVGA Forum Mod, Moderator. Am I somehow supposed to know that you don't work for EVGA? In fact it seems to be very likely that someone with a title of "EVGA Forum Moderator/ Moderator in EVGA's official community forums, would indeed work for EVGA. Also, your name is Scarlet-Tech which also led me to believe believe that you were type of EVGA Tech support person as well.

Scarlet-Tech I have provided in many threads that if you google GPU caught fire, you can see the resistors fail on many brands and fail in spectacular form. It seems that some people don't want to hear that though, no matter what position a user holds on a user based forum.
When some people see Moderator or EGC Admin title, they think it's coming from EVGA corporation. EVGA warns moderators and EGC Admins about that in the Code of Conduct, they require volunteers to sign and agree to follow.
And the code of conduct has been followed.

mmarafioti First of all i dont hang around these forums and know peoples names etc.
That was in my name years before I joined the EVGA forums, and was carried over. You could simply ask, it gets things answered very easily.

1. You could stop being so snippy and rude to me and everyone else in this thread. Quite frankly, I dont need your attitude after the nonsense ive been going through with this company already.
2. Why would I ask, If your name and status imply you work for EVGA to the common person?

I dont mean to come off as snippy. I just dont see the point of applying fluff to a direct answer.

It really feels more like a Band-Aid than a real "fix" to me. I'm still worried that my card is just going to explode one day and take the rest of my PC with it, like what's happened to a couple people already.

That is why you have a warranty, to cover you if something goes wrong. If you search google images for "gpu caught fire" you will see that the resistors are a common component that erupts and catches fire. This isnt specific to one brand as you can see from the pictures that come up. Trust your warranty.
