Currently I am running a 1080 SC Gaming, as it was the only card available when I was purchasing. Is the FTW and up a better card overall? (Noticeable improvement in gaming.) I don't really care about clocks, as I OCed to well beyond the FTW stock clocks (125 on core 400 on memory, with power target at %120). Any answers are much appreciated!

As far as I remember the FTW stock overclock coupled with GPU Boost 3 pushed the card to a max mhz of 2025.  So if like you said you overclocked your SC card even further and it reached 2025 or above then you are good, especially if everything is running stable.

Can't quite tell what my boost clock is, as the boost arrow in AB is all the way to the right. But I will assume that it is near 2000, if not above.
    Thanks for a quick response!

For qick clarification, I added 125 on core (probably can do more), 400 on memory, and power target set to %120.

Best way to find out not only your highest boost clock but to also see if it sticks is running the Heaven benchmark. It will show it in the upper right hand corner together with your GPU temperature.

Does anyone know what temp the 1080 starts to downclock at? I would definitely shoot to stay below that temp.

True thermal throttling starts @ 94c.

What about small increments, or does the card run at max clocks at 50-70c? Thanks

The 13MHz drops @ 60c, 70c & 80c isn't thermal throttling. Dynamic frequency control is what causes the 13MHz drops @ certain temps. Dynamic frequency control is a feature that helps keep the card as cool as possible. Dynamic frequency control isn't true thermal throttling.

I would not recommend upgrading from the SC to the FTW. Especially if you're already hitting good clock speeds on the SC.

As far as I remember the FTW stock overclock coupled with GPU Boost 3 pushed the card to a max mhz of 2025.  So if like you said you overclocked your SC card even further and it reached 2025 or above then you are good, especially if everything is running stable.

That's certainly only true with air cooling. My 1080 SC was running nicely at 2025 Mhz, and sometimes at 2038 Mhz, and I ran into occasional problems with 2050 MHz. I installed the EK full cover water block, and now my 1080 SC is running nicely at 2139 Mhz, and will run at 2152 Mhz but I see some video artifacts, which in addition to being distracting makes me nervous. So 2139 Mhz it is.

I would not be shocked if the FTW water cooled could usually meet or exceed this, given its better power supply. I would have bought the 1080 SC or the 1080 FTW, whichever I found available first. In my case the SC came up first, so I bought it. I'd have paid the additional $20 or whatever for the FTW though.

Best way to find out not only your highest boost clock but to also see if it sticks is running the Heaven benchmark. It will show it in the upper right hand corner together with your GPU temperature.

I have it installed, thanks for the tip.

The clock speed Heaven shows in the upper right isn't accurate. Turn the OSD (onscreen display) in Precision X OC, and have it show you what the card is actually doing instead.

Heaven would tell me my card was running 2164 Mhz, when according to Precision X OC's OSD it was running 2152 Mhz most of the time, occasionally dropping to 2139 Mhz. Heaven just displayed 2164 Mhz the whole time.

Just remember synthetic software for GPU tests may run at a better or different MHz than any specific game actually will.

For the best stability I find the absolute max OC for a CPU, GPU, RAM then dial back about 10%

When benchmarking every little bit counts -- not really in games and other software --- crash free is much more important

Unfortunately MSI Afterburner is much more stable than Precision X OC at this time; however, it can not control the LEDs

Very little difference in F.E. SC and FTW cards, such small margins in performance change. You might see a 500-700 pt increase in 3Dmark benchmarks.
