Update: Got my new Supernova G2 850w installed, unfortunately there is still coil whine present and it's at the same audio level it was before with my previous PSU. Never had and problems with my previous graphics cards (Asus & MSI) this being my first time with Evga. Seem to be all down to a luck of the draw Evga said they would be happy to start the RMA process if the PSU didn't help. I'll update once again as soon as I get a replacement...fingers crossed!

Hi Jonox i think personally it is a card issue with all manufacturers ..and not just EVGA.s. I also tested A Inno Ichill Air boss x3 GTX 1070 and had a little coil whine. In fact it was a bit more audible than the FTW 1070. I tested a Palit GTX 1080 and had none?? yet other people have had it on their Palit card? it is imo a lottery as to whether you get whine or not mate.

I thought as much, thanks for the info Adger...Hopefully my next one is a little better because I want to stick with Evga, given the fantastic support I have revived from them over the past week.

I have a 1080 FTW in a Phantek Evolv (Tempered Glass Edition) and I have the case on top of my desk very close to me and I haven't noticed any coil whine.
Tthis is a new build and I haven't read much on this case acoustics, but overall it been pretty quite ... even with a custom fan curve for the GPU (this cards fan were barely spinning before I set a custom fan curve; temps 65-75).

Update: I've switched from the Corsair PSU CX 750 back to SeaSonic XP2 860W Platinum, and the coil whine is absolutely gone. 0 coil whine even at 165 fps. So the issue was the PSU in my case for sure.

Its very strange for sure mate,it looks like a combination of Psu,s Gpu,s and everything else im glad you have no coil whine nice one. Like i said in a previous post i have very little with this FTW 1070 i had more whine on a Different 1070 and zero whine on a 1080. Dunno about a silicon lottery..more like a coil whine lottery

Would I buy it again, Im not sure, I mean, the coil whine to me is really annoying especially since its louder and more noticeable than the fans by a good margin and eliminates the whole quiet selling point of the card, but I dont have spare power supplies or graphics cards to test so I cant be sure whether or not its the fault of the card or psu. That being said, I bought an EVGA 550watt g2... Which is rated highly on every review site Ive visited and received a 10/10 on Johnny guru. To me itd just be weird for their power supply to have issues with their graphics cards, but who knows. So I probably would have just gone for a card more known for silence in regard to coil whine. Apart from the coil whine, the card seems pretty decent. I have a small niggle with the lights being diffused somewhat poorly hurting the generally pleasant aesthetic appeal of the card, buts its not that big a deal on my card (though I know it varies) and it still looks better than a lot of other cards.

EhCanadian..Do you have the option of a 14 day RMA where you live mate? If the whine was considerably louder than my fans i would have sent mine back,i think most manufacturers cards have the possibility of coil whine. If your out of the 14 day period can you send it to EVGA to look at? I dont know how the consumer law works where you live pal..maybe contact EVGA? All the best Adger

Well it's like Adger and other said, seems to be a combination of gpu and psu. Some PSU's might help some cards, others might just have coil whine no matter what the case. I haven't had any problems with diffused LED...if your using the Evga precisionX software, you could increase the lightness of the colour led your using which might help. Should be a week or so now till my replacement comes.

I did talk to them. They suggested running a benchmark for a few hours then rmaing so I did, then got a new card and it sounded the same =/ So, Im guessing given Ive seen some people report no coil whine, that the evga powersupply has problems with the evga card -__-. Too bad I cant return it and I dont want to have to buy another powersupply without knowing which one wont cause the whine so Il just live with it.

Why don't you take your card to a friend and test it there to see if the coil whine is still present.

Its not just Evga PSU's that may have problems with the evga cards (or any other manufacturers), I had GPU coil whine with my previous Antec HCG-750M. Still present with my Evga g2 850, the coil are mainly down to the cards alone it would seem. Trying it in a friends computer would be a good idea...I took my computer to my local computer shop and asked the owner if they had any spare PSU I could test. Again, still coil whine :(

Seemed like it was. It came still with the plastic film though the packaging was different and it had hard plastic instead of the shaped black foam.

I didnt. Just played on it for a few hours and it sounded about as loud as my original card (which to my hearing didnt change in volume) I first got it so I repackaged it to return. Actually shipping it off today.

My first 1070 FTW had absolutely horrible coil whine. I have a EVGA G2 750 power supply. I even tried it with another power supply, same thing. I RMA'd the card and I am happy to report that the new card has zero coil whine. :)

Great news! ..This has made me little more hopeful that my replacement will have less/no coil (I'm using the EVGA G2 850). I have only just sent my 1080 off today, how long did it take to get your new card from Evga?

Unfortunately for me I'm on the east coast and EVGA rma is on the west coast. So it took like 12-14 days IIRC.

Thats... oddly disappointing to hear. I have the same evga g2 except the 550watt myself, and my replacement had the same level of noise, but I doubt id get another replacement, and definitely dont want to play the lottery and end up getting another card with the same noise...

Hey guys, just wanted to update you all. I revived my replacement 1080 ftw today and I'm happy to report the coil whine noise has drastically decreased. There is still some coil whine present, however I have to get right up to my case to hear it and my case is under my desk (previous card I could hear from under my desk). Overall I'm very happy with Evga and their rma process. Still using my new Evga G2 850w.

Adger Hi all OP here.. i said id update and here i am. Put the FTW in bout 5 hrs ago,ive done plenty of benchmark tests (Firestrike,Valley and Heaven Benchmark 4.0) and im very impressed. Coil whine yes i do have it but..its very, very slight,i only have it in GPU intensive stuff benchmarks, GTA V,Witcher 3 etc ..and im only on a Corsair TX650 PSU. Boosted to 1987Mhz without touching anything. after a slight OC +40 on the core clock and +45 on the memory clock ,and a custom fan profile it boosts to 2025 and 4050 on the mem. I haven,t even touched the power limit. Eats games for breakfast runs everything beautifully on my U2715H Dell 2k ultrasharp. I7 4790K cpu Anyway to cut a long story short im very very happy with this card..it oozes class. The packaging, the folder that comes with it with your bits and bobs in ..everything just looks so good. This is my 1st EVGA card..it wont be my last, im seriously looking at upgrading my warranty already!! just to stay with this company. A few Pics of benchmarks if thats ok. Ive received so much helpful advice on my questions from forum members and also EVGA staff. For that i thank you all. EVGA you,ve a customer for life.. All the very best Adger
I've researched the coil whine topic before deciding to get a 1070 myself, many users mentioned that a high quality PSU will likely fix coil whine. All of the user feedback (who obtained a better PSU after those suggestions) reported back saying that it fixed their coil whine. I have a Corsair CX750M (probably not a recommended PSU) and the only time I experienced coil whine was at the ending splash screen of Heaven benchmark after finishing a benchmark. I think I remember that you mentioned using a Corsair TX650 and if you are still on that, you could try a premium PSU.

Nice findings ianfinity ..yep still got my tx650 and tbh my coil whine is still very very slight, the only time I heard it more considerably is when my lad sticks Lego hobbit on and it jumped to over 500 FPS haha..I capped the FPS and its fine after. I actually have it at +55 and +550 on the respective cores and I still only hear very slight whine, certainly nothing for me to moan about. Next psu il go for a higher model and see if it eliminates it completely..cheers pal

J0NOX Wow, my new rma card is now having the same problems that others are having in this thread. http://forums.evga.com/GTX-1080-FTW-Black-screen-amp-fans-spin-up-to-100-m2530081-p4.aspx Looks like I'll be getting a full refund and talking my business elsewhere.
If you have coilwhine and replacement has coilwhine then probably either other hardware like psu being cause due bad ripple or you set standards to high, if its as loud as exiting heaven benchmark all the time then i would be worried though.

Look at the other post. That isn't a problem with coil whine, it is black screens and fan problems.

Yes i know, my new RMA card has black screen and 100% fan prob. I just wanted to update people, happy the coil has reduced but it looks like this card a new problem.

I tested/replaced a few things like the PSU before my first RMA and still had coil.. Currently using my brand new G2 850w.
