Hey All,

I am comparing a dual Intel X5650 set up and an i7 3930k build.

I would like to upgrade my current build to be able to do some occasional gaming. I mainly play FPS games and am not interested in going with anything with less than 6 actual cores. I also do not plan on overclocking the processors. This is the first time I am upgrading my mobo/cpu since purchasing a core 2 duo about 7 years ago.

I was about to just buy the i7 but found a great deal on the x5650's.

Which set up do you believe would give me the most performance over a long-term stretch(another 5-7years) before having to build another computer and why?

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!

Which mobo comes with the X5650's?
If they come with an SR-2 that's hands down the best choice.

It would just be the x5650's. It would not come with any mobo or RAM. Would the Xeon set up pull more juice from my PSU? I currently have a 600w PSU and would like to put a 770GTX in there as well. Would you recommend me looking into a new PSU as well?

Ah, I wouldn't bother considering the x5650's then because almost all dual socket 1366 mobos can't oc and finding one that does is next to impossible under $300.

What model is that psu and how old is it?

Edit: I just noticed you don't plan to oc, definitely go for the 3930k as it has a significantly higher stock frequency.

Just an old Rosewill 600w 80+ Bronze.

I can get dual 5650's for $160. Will I really see a massive performance difference from the i7 3930k that is $300ish?

Since your not oc'ing the extra 800MHz the 3930k has over the x5650 would help a fair bit in games.

    Well shoot,

Now to decide on whether I should get the x5680 or the 3930k.

Thanks for all of your help!

If you look around you could probably find a cheap X58 mobo that can accept the X5680,
they sometimes pop up in the marketplace section.
    Here's some that work:
    Asus P6T/SE/DELUXE V2/WS PRO
    Gigabyte x58 UD3R/UD5/UD7/UD9
most evga boards need to be modded to accept xeons.

Thought it was the 2011 dual socket's that couldn't overclock because the 2011 Xeons didn't allow it

Most dual socket 1366 boards can't oc either. The SR-2, an Asus board (I think) and one or two supermicro boards after a hard mod will oc though.

For gaming you shouldn't be getting any of those set-ups. You should be looking at a i7 4790K, it requires no overclocking and the processor is all ready @ 4.0GHz stock with 4.4GHz turbo. It is the best gaming processor out right now, especially if you don't overclock. It's going to out perform even a i7 5820K processor at stock speeds.

Here is a review on it:

If you take that route, make sure to purchase some nice 2400MHz+ RAM like this:

Also make sure to get a good SSD. It really helps with your gaming experience. Intel, Crucial and Samsung have decent SSD's, I would find one in your price range. At the very least, a 120GB. I have a Crucial MX100 512GB and it's perfect... fit's quite a few games on it.

I would love to get a 4790k. I'm trying to build this PC on a budget. I only game maybe 1-2x per week and my 6 year old computer is feeling pretty old, even on counter-strike.

If it is possible to overclock the x5650, I will probably just purchase that and a used x58 board. No sense in spending $300 on a cpu that I'll only really use 1-2x per week.

Budget build, i'd get a i3 4370 and a MSI Z97 board. Solid processor, just built one for my cousin and it does very well. It has a Intel HD4600 IGP that is capable of playing World of Warcraft on fair graphics with the average FPS around 80.

That processor paired up with a video card will do even better. I compared it to my i7 4790K's HD4600 IGP and I truthfully couldn't tell the difference in gameplay on World of Warcraft.
