Hi,

I just bought a new GTX960 SC.
When I boot my PC bios notifies me that something is not ok with one short beep followed by 3 short beeps.
I just measured the voltage of the external 6 pin power connector and I have 3x 12V.

Does anyone know what the error code one beep followed by 3 beeps means?

I have a HP H9 1100eb system

Best Regards,
Kenneth

Well that sucks.. Thought new cards would be retrofittable
No bios updates available on HP website.

    Thanks for the help though

If there isn't an updated, UEFI bios, you are stuck. You could try calling them. They might help you out.

I asked HP on their forum, let's see what they say.
Regarding the extra bios requirements to run this card; how does one know when he/she can run that card?
There is no mention of it on the spec sheet:

    Requirements

    • 400 Watt or greater power supply.****PCI Express, PCI Express 2.0 or PCI Express 3.0 compliant motherboard with one graphics slot.
    • Windows 10, Windows 8 & 8.1, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP

Seems like the min bios version needs to be added to this list!

Sir, what was your previous video card? Your post is making me sweat. I was told it would work fine on my PC, but now I fear it won't. Damn!!!

I myself just recently purchased a GTX 960 SC that's on the way.

My previous card was the AMD Radeon HD 7950.
I'm alraedy checking the return policy from my vendor :)

My bios version: AMI 7.13, 5-1-2012, let me know if you have a more recent version (if you have the same mobo: 623913-002(=part nr from hp) Motherboard - Chicago, Beats, USB3 (v1.61))

From what I understand, the real issue is that I have legacy bios while I need UEFI bios like DeathAngle74 states. Thanks for that by the way

Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to test a GPU in every iteration of motherboard and BIOS. OEM motherboards are always more problematic when attempting to update hardware. The BIOS are more limited and designed to work with a more limited range of hardware. A quick search using your motherboard model shows you're not the only one with this issue.

    Indeed, unfortunately no solutions available.
@evga: Is it possible to flash the bios of the graphics card to a bios version that will be compatible with my MOBO?
As it doesnt look like that HP will have an updated bios version available.

Just found out that HP claims to be UEFI compatible:
The Chicago motherboard uses an AMI BIOS version 7 that is compatible with UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface).

Maybe there additional requirements as to the version of that UEFI bios (this seems like a never-ending story)

In windows, press start choose run, type in "msinfo" without quotes, find "BIOS mode", should say UEFI, not legacy,
Oh, and apparently that's not enough, see my post above. HP claims that my bios supports UEFI, but it still doesnt work

Hello and welcome to the forums Navsea! I'm sorry to hear that the GTX 960 you purchased isn't fuctioning with your HP. Unfortunately the issue isn't on the video card side of compatibility. I've seen 900 series cards run fine on boards as old as x58 and z68 boards from 5+  years ago, and i personally run two 970s on a z68 FTW with no issues. The problem comes from the motherboard not recognizing video cards with newer architectures. Usually this can be resolved by the motherboard manufacturer updating the firmware to recognize newer generation cards. It appears both the Dell and HP systems mentioned above came out about four years ago. Pre-built system manufacturers tend to stop updates about a year or so after the release of the system, so it's highly unlikely that the manufactuers will have a newer firmware that would help in this situation.

Now, not all systems will have this problem, so we can't say exactly what systems will or won't work with a specific generation of video card. With the sheer number of different systems from different manufacturer's, not to mention possible variations of hardware configurations among the same models, its' just not feasible to acquire and test for compatibility with pre-built systems. Because of this, we generally recommend that if you have an older system and you need to replace the video card, you look at a video card from around the time your system was new. With a four year old system, a 600 series or older video card would have the best likelihood of working.

seems odd the card wont work. I have a five year old system I built and the Z68 motherboard has a legacy BIOS. My GTX 750 worked great, now my GTX950FTW works just fine.
My question is; since his BIOS is legasy, why wont his MB recognize the card?

His BIOS is a version of UEFI. As was pointed out, OEM systems have a tendency to have a generic BIOS that is limited and limited in detecting and assigning resources to newer hardware. Look at my hardware, my 980Ti is running just fine. In his particular case, it is a matter of the OEM updating the BIOS.

Not going to work. Trust me. I myself have a 1st gen HP Phoenix h9-1110t and at the time. It came with a 550 Ti. Machine has same mobo as you OP. The last card I put in it was a 2GB EVGA GTX 660 Superclocked version. Worked fine. All the blame is on HP. They failed to update the bios for newer cards. The newest card that would work with that machine is this one here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127783 that card has a legacy bios switch. You just switch it to that mode and it will work just fine with said pc you have. Or as stated earlier. The other option is looking for a older 600 series card.

HP doesn't update their BIOs very often which is a shame. I guess they assume that a solution is to buy a new HP PC.
