It does NOT work.... I updated the Via and I STILL get a power Surge on the Hub Port. UNTIL today I have NEVER EVER seen this error and I AM NOT happy.... If anybody gets rid of it PLEASe post what they did. I have updated EVERY thing and it WAS working peachy... WHAT gives NOW....

When I picked up my Classy X79 I had that same problem.  I had to RMA (this was a few months back) because they weren't aware of this problem and I was told it was a hardware defect.  I feel your pain.  Hopefully this will be resolved soon, but I am getting pretty frustrated as it seems like we take two steps forward and one back with every bios revision.

WOW now it does work... At first the power surge would NOT go off and now several reboots later IT DOES go off... I would LOVE to know what gives I SOOO want to trust this system already....

PLEASE Evga tell us what's going on? I feel as though I am one of the lucky ones since it is off at the moment but who KNOWS when its going to go back on...

What gets me ( as well as a few others here ) is this COMPLETELY random and has NEVER happened to me before... Since I have been running this mobo for a few weeks to a month now and NOT seen this before its hard to believe its a Hardware issue, that much I believe to be true... I am hoping this will be it for a bit now as I REALLY have NO desire to rip this apart again... The same feelings many have here...

I updated to everything about two days ago and at first it had trouble but it seems like it's working now. Just from Hibernation, I have to unplug and replug in my joy stick controller but that's it. Other than that, it all seems to work for now.

So, last night I'm playing Skyrim... didn't save for like 10 minutes... then the freeze when the ports drop out.

I got frustrated, shut it down and went to bed.  Just fired it back up and it boots to windows and USB connections are lost and it freezes up again.

Reboots, so far so good... this is the endless cycle every 4-5 reboots.

Quite frankly, I am at the point where I am seriously considering selling my X79 Classy and getting a different X79 mainboard OR selling chip and board and going with a Z77  4P folding rig.  Nothing but problems since I purchased it, and a new one pops up after the old one is solved.  An absolute waste of 450 bucks.  I'm pretty bummed.

So, I was told today they're still working with the chipset vendor to resolve.  Of course, everything I reported back in April/May has been confirmed by client beta testing as still not a solution.  So three month's after several of us tested this, we can confirm that after retesting it, our initial test results, which were provided to EVGA were in fact, accurate.

So... by all accounts, it appears this should be resolved around the time the X79 chipset and boards are EOL'd.  In other words, let's get some sufficient resources on this and just fix it.

High-end enthusiast products should never have to deal with this degree of pervasive design failure.  I've tested 1x X79 SLI and 3x X79 FTWs with this issue, or 100% of X79 motherboards I've had.  That with the C-States and memory configuration/compatibility issues make this the 2nd worst motherboard release in EVGA history only topped by the P67 release with the recall.  In fact, this might be worse because it's taken so long for EVGA to even recognize it and now with tortoise-rivaling lack of speed in resolving it.

Well said.  I am still having problems with my 3.0 ports after the updates.  This is by far the worst board I have ever owned and the response has not been fast enough.  This will most likely be my last mainboard EVGA purchase.  It's a crapshoot each time I boot my rig to see which ports are going to work, or go out.  I also am having problems with cards running at 3.0 speeds.  One card does, the other doesn't.

Bad news board.

Although the problem with my USB 3.0 ports seems to have been solved..., I have gotten an occasional USB overvolt message..., meaning that everything is still not quite right.  I cannot get PCIE 3.0 to work, even though it should be.

I'm disappointed and I really still don't know who's at fault here.  Is it Intel with it's goofy idea not to implement native USB 3.0 and PCIE 3.0 on the LGA 2011 CPU's, or is it the board makers who have had to go to aftermarket add-ons to make the newest features available on what is supposed to be Intel's 'Flagship', top-line performance chipset and CPU's.  They seem to have given up on developing this platform as quickly as they could get the first iteration half-tested and out the door.  Or.., is it partially an Nvidia problem with incomplete and shoddy drivers?

If I wouldn't take such a big loss on the cost of my 3930K and Classified X79 MB, I'd put them both on Ebay and build a Z77 system!

This is going to put a big dent in willingness of people to quickly jump on the next new platform that Intel puts out!

Re:Important Update for EVGA X79 Motherboards 2012/07/20 18:00:41 (permalink)
It's a shame, but Z77 looks like the place to do since Intel is doing all the work on the chipset.

I think what really chaffs me is how EVGA hasn't even issued an apology for 8 months of this crap.  It's just nothing but hassle to troubleshoot their products for them and then not even get so much as a thanks for busting your tail doing what they already should have done for us.  That's not the EVGA of old.

You can't go to support with these issues because they're clueless about it and put you through endless RMAs and posting in the forums appears to be useless because they're basically ignoring our frustrations here, as well.  The only option is to email them directly and with that you get "we're working it...".

Look, I have a $450 busted "high-end" motherboard and every time I boot I have to immediately reboot or shift USB devices to whichever set of random working parts decide to initialize this time around.  Then everytime I want to update the BIOS or test at stock settings, I have to boot up with defaults and rush to flash the BIOS within 30 seconds of booting otherwise the C-States bug locks up the entire system.  So flashing is a risky bet and anything else is useless.  Gah..............

---------------

UPDATE: Scratch the Z77 as well for now.  It appears EVGA's Z77 has the same inability to use a standard XMP profile and the USB 3.0 ports there are also flakey.  A lot of folks in that forum make that complain and the guru3D reviewers note that XMP profiles didn't work.

So apparently, EVGA can't release a motherboard where basic features work at release, that's the bottom line right now.  To their credit, they got their Marvell 6G controller operating a speeds more comparable to Intel's controller without dropping drives.  So, I guess that's something.

However, I'm going to very irate if the Z77 gets their issues fixed before the X79 crowd.  8 months of this... not even so much as a "Sorry everyone for the inconvenience."

Since switching back to Linux again I have noticed that after quite a few bootups over the past week, that the USB 3.0 controller functions everytime in X. I have yet to see a failure to initialize in Linux. From what I can tell, the open source USB 3.0 driver in Linux is more reliable than the driver in Windows as in Windows the USB 3.0 controller intermittently fails to initialize.

I remember reading about 2 years ago that Intel made a decision not to start implementing USB 3.0 until they darn well want to. This ticked off people no end and there were lots of complaining and grumbling. However, Intel was doing pretty well at the time and basically indicated they could not care less what consumers want. It's not like there is really any competition out there.

Other companies stepped up and decided to fill the void. The result is what we have today.

One of the old articles I found:

Yes, and we all groaned about it then knowing this would happen... also, the lack of sufficient SATA III ports.
