I thought I was the worst Starcraft2 player of all time but I guess I was wrong. Ha ha. Unfortunately the only real way to get good at the game is to practice a lot and use hotkeys to speed up your unit processing. My problem is I lack the patience, time and probably intelligence to be very good. I do like the game though. SP is excellent imo.

Tip #1, build a TON of resource gathering units. A lot of players seem to miss this part of RTS games but the person who can gather the most resources, will almost always win. I think the amount is 20 or something for starcraft. Google it. haha. All i know, is when i play starcraft 1 or 2, i just build a lot of units, quickly expand then...well build units like crazy. Also fortify the choke points, or at least make it so they are blocked with supply depots (If terran)

I'm terrible at SC2 multiplayer and unfortunately I cant figure out how to play custom games like those great tower defense, RPG, and action hero games that were on the original. I dont have any friends on SC2 either, dont know why they made networking so much harder to do. Seriously I would add you guys to my friends list but I dont know how. BTW the ideal balance of resource gathering units is 24.

I noticed in the beginning that you sent your probes to your nexus first, you should not waste time and get them gathering minerals, and then have at least one probe in production at all times (each mineral field could be optimized best with around 25 workers but you want to have at least 40 overall, you can always transfer the probes to your expansions). Anticipate your supply, make sure you are at least one pylon ahead of your unit production needs. As for the vespene gas, once the assimilator is complete have 3 probes gathering gas immediately, do not build an assimilator if you do not plan on gather gas yet. I would suggest playing custom money maps (like fastest map possible) instead of laddering. Know your units, know your tech buildings, and get a feel for macro protoss because Starcraft 2 is 80% macro in my opinion. Then you'd know where to prioritize your chrono boosts. Myself and many SC2 players watch a ton of pro games, you can find a plenty on HDStarcraft, HuskyStarcraft, and Day9 youtube channels. I'd recommend watching White-Ra (aka DuckLoadRa) games, he's one of the best protoss players in the world.

I agree Starcraft II (and other games like it) are 80% - 90% macro. I agree with WinterFrost, check out Day 9, I think he still does his Newbie Tuesday. He gives a lot of great tips. Play plenty of custom games while getting over the learning curve, then hit the ladders.
