Got thru the first cyberdemon battle but can't get past the 2nd cyberdemon incarnation fight - and this is at the lowest difficulty. After 3 nights/session of repeatedly getting killed I decided to replay the mission from the start and work my way back to the fight with a full BFG load of 3 to take on the cyberdemon again. Doesn't work .... once I completed the last battle I was greeted with a "Save and Exit" only option .... no "Continue". So I quit to the desktop and restarted the game and but then I was back to the start of the 2nd cyberdemon fight. Have no idea why this is happening but apparently the game is structured such that replaying a mission is just that - you replay it and you're done.
In any event I'm as far into the game as I can manage - and just to mention at this point my health was upgraded to the max, my shield was at 4 bars but only 3 bars on the ammo ... and none of my weapon strengths were maxed out. Since I'm stuck at the cyberdemon fight I may as well start a new game and this time try all of the side missions which brings me to my question - does doing the side missions help acquire stronger weapons, shields, etc.,..??

There you go man: https://www.google.com/search?q=doom+cheatsLol. Putting humor aside, you'll have to try and use a different strategy. Whatever you're doing now, try and reverse it. I haven't played Doom yet, but it would sound like you're not going to win going head to head. Speed and flanking it is the only way to win in this situation. Try changing tactics and using various weapons/skills.

I finished DOOM. If you really start from scratch, you should do all the challenges and power up your marine and his weapons as much as you can. There are a lot of upgrades! It make things easier. I killed the Demon with patience and the BFG at the third rest of his healtbar. You have to use patterns for your attack. - I had several tries too. After beating the Demon, you will think how easy it was...  Edit: Every bossfight of DOOM needs a little strategy.

Yep, it took me many, many attempts & strategies to beat the final lvl boss.
* I had about 3/4 of the secrets found for powering up my marine by that time....
now I randomly repeat playing different boards just for fun.... trying to find all secrets

Thanks for the suggestions ... I bypassed the challenges ... and apparently is why I'm stuck where I am .. going to start a new game and this time do all the side missions (challenges). Thanks again!

It took me a while learning how and when to time my jumps and ducking those flamefronts he tosses at you. I had best success with the Heavy Assault Rifle firing those Darts, then using the Plasma Gun to 'stun' him and then use the Rocket Launcher to unload on him while he was stunned. Repeat as necessary and remember to jump then duck.

I got close about 3 or 4 times out of more attempts than I can count over (3) hour sessions ... and why I gave up in frustration. It wasn't so much the avoiding as it was not enough weapon punch. Just to mention, I was able to get though Wolfenstein the Old Blood at the highest difficulty which was an exercise in constantly running and gunning so it isn't like I'm new at this. Just to mention guys ... I'm 76 and get ribbed all the time by my 3 grandsons (2 in their 20's and one 30 years old) for being an old fart "playing computer games"..... but, hey, it's a heck of lot more fun than "old fart" shuffleboard .... (grin)....

I just remembered. I unlocked all of my grenade perks and was using a 'Siphon' grenade to drain his health and give it to me. Whenever my health got low I lobbed a Siphon grenade and I think that helped me a lot. I think you tap f1 to select which grenade you want to use.

Reached 60 in March and still going but not as strong as before. Us Geezers need to pitch in some of our retirement funds so we can have our own server where we at least have a chance at MP games. I don't stand a chance against these youngsters. They show no mercy. Have they no respect for the elderly? I think they should start adding damage resistence to our character starting at age 60, of course, and adding more for each year we age. 
What are you talk'n about Zuhl? Old Farts kick ass! Haven't you seen this?

You earn points on side missions, and the other things you can do. You need a strategy when fighting the bosses. You need to keep moving all the time. The only time you might stop for a second is to do a glory kill on one of the lesser demons. With the bosses, you need to keep moving, use more powerful weapons, keep running over the shields and ammo. When the boss is really low, get behind it, and do the big kill. This is what I learned.

Just a follow up .... I finally got past the cyberdemon bosses and from then on it was "relatively" easier including the final boss battle ... which by the way ... drum roll .... this old fart beat on the 1st try! Replaying the game from the start but this time completing as many rune challenges as I could, finding secrets, etc., really beefed up my weapon and health strengths was the key for me. Yeah, I played at the "Easy" difficulty but at my age I don't care!

I have like 3 levels to go until I finish the game. Hopefully I beat the last boss fight on the first try too. =)
