OK I would have to suspect a bad TIM spread. What was your TIM application method, I didn't see anyone else ask?

Vids on TIM application:

YouTube: How Thermal Compound Spreads

(And I recommend looking at some of those others too.)

"Also go to www.innovationcooling.com and check out their application page it has great instructions for the correct application." - Falcon_CMH

Well I always have just use a pea sized "drop" on all my applications, also thanks for asking.
It may not be enough prolly as I used up the last of it which was just about a pea sized drop.
Hmm....
To add.
Hmm.
I think I may not have applied enough, as stated above I may of needed more.
Thanks for the link

No, a pea sized drop is more than sufficient. I have read repeatedly only the center of the CPU counts for heat dissipation. I only used a small rice-sized bit myself, and my temps are great.

The TIM pattern when you removed the cooler? That would not be good.

hey v1ral

This is what I had with my 920 d0 4.2GHZ

BIOS v77
Without vdroop
hT on
BCLK: 201
Multi - 21
Vcore: 1.376
VTT: 125 to 175mV (depending on BIOS version, u may wanna start with 175)
QPI pLL: 1.225
CPU PLL: 1.65
VTT PWM: 370
CPU PWM: I don't remember the value I think it was 940 or 1210
All impedance at auto

Regarding the Tim I used ocz freeze with a prolimatech megahalem!!!

Dunno if this helps but try it out!!! Also sometimes reloading the bios to default and starting from scratch worked for me couple of times!!

Also FYI, my new 970 needs more vcore than 920!

BAH!  I use the CC method all the time.  Never really detected any probs, but I'm definitely going straight home and redoing using the "X" method and the others.

Just got the Thermaltake Level 10 GT last night, so might as well re-TIM will I'm changing everything over to the new case.

Great links HWeed.  Thanx!  (:::cuts up credit cards in a fit of embarrasment:::)

so you are saying in order for me to use a 970 six core CPU, I would have to get a different motherboard or send it to evga?
I've read about his a few months ago, I would have to have my board shipped to my cousin's after evga does there thing.
I was hoping they would solve this..

Okay guys I have found my VTT vcore following the guide and right now up to 203 which is my target to get a little over 4.2 Main target is 201 to give me the absolute 4.2.
Vtt is +175.
I have ran the tests as per guide *the one in the sticky "Max base clock Strategy Guide" and I came up with +175.
Is there anything I should change.

Good luck trying to go that low on VTT on yours, but it is just an example that you do not need high VTT to reach 4.2GHz on a 920. Do NOT just willie-nilly adjust your VTT up to that just bc someone else did. Every chip is different. High VTT will cause high Vreg temps and core temps, and will hurt your LinX Gflops. BTW +175 would be 1.375V VTT.

What are you temps.
The thing that is hindering me is temps.
I tried 201 bclk with 1.4 but temps got so high like 92c I was holy moly.
I may just have to settle with my 197 bclk overclock:(....
If I can't get to 4.2, should I try a different cpu?
I know "If it's just for 4.2, then why do it"..
I want something to do with my rig only worthwhile thing I see imo is going Six core 970...

Temps 80-76 peak, Vreg is what is bothering me it tops out at 86.
It is your VTT causing those high temps IMO.
It doesn't matter what CPU chip you have if you don't do the OC right.

You will find that with low VTT you can increase your CPU Vcore quite a bit, and still have lower temps than you have now.
BTW, I am air cooled. And BSOD 124 does NOT mean you need more VTT (just maybe).

Okay I know it doesn't mean to raise vcore..I a not getting any BSOD.. just failing linx with 3 gbs and 10 passes I failed.
On the way to 203 *which was my target so I can get to 4.2, I would get into windows I failed then raise VTT... or am I doing it all wrong.
That is what I am hearing reading on, I have this odd feeling that I am doing this ALL Wrong.
It's weird though cause I can pass 50 passes of IBT and LINX with 197 base clock with 1.275 with out vdroop +125 VTT everything on Auto except Vdimm and IOH vcore at 1.1 temps didn't even reach 80c. max was like 75c
I didn't need to change MCH strap or what ever it says it other guides.
Please guide me, I don't like asking this but I am about to give up on this thing and say I got a sad chip but I know I can get to 4.2 haha.
But please help me

Okay another question.
Should I stay at x19 multi?
I know it can lower things, but what should I do.

If I use x19 multi I would have to go up to 220/221 base clock... is this bad?
But as we all know, 20*1 with have Turbo and I want that..but if it's okay to be with out then it's cooh!!

Avoid going to such high bclock if you can. It will only put more stress on the system...

v1ral, it takes a lot of experimentation to properly OC. This means if you don't have a really great brain memory you need to keep track of your settings and what you tried, and the exact results, on paper. This is really handy when you hit a hard spot like this one, so you don't repeat unsuccessful tries. Sometimes, when you hit a hard spot like this, it just takes a lot of experimentation time to find what works, and what improves.

For instance you can sometimes dial in voltages by watching the results in LinX. You find an area that improves LinX Gflops, then you find the delineating values, that is the high and low values that delineate the better Gflops. Then you set your voltage right in the middle of the delineating values - go higher when the middle is not close to a valid setting. Sometimes the delineating values are those that produce BSOD, hang, or LinX errors. However, this takes a lot of time and patience. And to really do it right, since some changes will change the delineating values for other voltages, you need to do them all over again when you think you have reached the right settings.

Now in your case of LinX not passing, my advice to you is first back off the OC to a stable spot nearby. Then dial in your voltages as described above. I recommend you do this with VTT, CPU PLL, QPI PLL, and maybe DIMM V. Watch your Vreg as well, like a hawk, when you do this. Do not go far above stock with CPU PLL and QPI PLL, like maybe 0.2 above stock settings (this is just my cautious apprehension). You could do this with IOH as well, with a limit of about 1.3V, but it has little to do with your CPU OC, and more to do with your gfx OC - you would want to run a gfx stress-test with this instead - but I digress. After you do that, you should be able to increase Bclock with only an increase in CPU Vcore, and maybe a little more VTT.

This may seem a little obsessive to some, but when things aren't going well for your OC this is what is needed to be done. Good luck.

When I mentioned DIMM V, I was saying so bc recently I measured my DIMM V with a DMM and found actual was pretty low. I had set 1.60V, and actual was 1.568. E-Leet said 1.62! But don't assume your board is off the same, it might even be off the other way. That's why I recommend you do this with DIMM V, and be careful to keep DIMM V within 0.5V of VTT (or IMC damage could result).

Mine actually overvolts my DIMM by 0.016V so yeah everyboard is a bit different.
DIMM Voltage set in the BIOS: 1.7V
DIMM Voltage readback from BIOS/E-Leet: 1.74V
Actual DMM measurement: 1.716V

With glops does it generally go down with higher clocks?
I've notice this when I look at the 4.2 club, with my 197 bclk my gflops are around 55~58 close to 59.
With adjusting volts do I just guess or see what this does and hope for the better.
What will be the reasons to +/- volts in the ones you listed I should change.
Like when to up IOH/VTT/CPU PLL/QPI PLL, what I am saying.. what is the general consensus on what voltages to start off.

No. Gflops stand for Gigaflops, or Billions of Floating point Operations per second - Gigaflops. This is a direct measure of your CPU speed, and therefore theoretically should go up linearly with core speed. But things like uncore speed, QPI speed, and transfer failures due to voltages being near the failure point will cause the Gflops to decrease. External uses of the CPU like AV and defrag will also affect the exact Gflop number bc the CPU then has less available cycles to devote to the task(s).

Them seem like very good numbers, what I would expect - at the high end. My numbers are not that good, I am working on improving them, with the same method I mentioned. Currently I am getting about 52.6 Gflops at 203 and Vantage P27260. I hope to improve that.

Yes, just guess, with some practice you will get better at it. The key is not to change anything too far too fast. When you do that you get BSOD conditions so bad you have to reset CMOS to get into BIOS.

I am not sure what you are asking. Are you asking which ones to do first? I would do it this way:
VTT
CPU PLL
QPI PLL
IOH is optional.

Otherwise, you start with the voltages you had last, at your last proven stable OC speed.

Thanks HWeed is it okay to call you that... your name is long
haha
Anyways.
What I generally went by was change vtt and vcore I stay with 1.3 for default vcore then work my way up with VTT and 1.2 or +0 until I passed.
Which is funny cause before this foray of trying to get to 4.2 I had all voltages at default except:
vdimm 1.65
vcore 1.3
IOH 1.1
I set RAM to mfg. specs which is 8-8-8-21 @ 1600mhz from G.Skill.
As you can see from my previous Template my voltages has changed and I will use that as a general guide when I try and go for higher clocks.
With that said I now just passed  with 10 runs with 3gbs memory at 198 bclk Gflops were 53 but I ended up with VTT +200 or should I take a different aproach.
Luckily I have my 197 bclk with HT saved in my bios if I do have issues on the way.
Also with temps highest temps on cores is 77c in real temp and Vreg is 60c

Yeah, my Gflops dropped too, we have to figure out what's causing that, bc there is no point in going faster if the performance is worse. If one goes higher under this condition often it is very frustrating to figure out what is wrong, since there may be two or more settings that are off, each of which may cause your particular malfunction; it is better to tune it when you are stable. Your temps look OK BTW, except could be a little better for a WC sys. Wish my Vreg was that low. When I reduce my PWM freq to 800 it actually increases a *C.

I am stable right now at 203 and I am now starting this tuning process (actually I started it yesterday).
