Joining the Military Services is similar to being in jail, you cant do anything unless your told to.......why would you want that??

Only after jail nobody respect you whole life and look on you as garbage and after military everyone respect you and you can find better job or you can work in military or close to military to learn further... And no matter what happen in future you and your family have better chance to survive if you serve in military and trained and learned different things... Hundreds of bad situation could happen.

Because there is no greater satisfaction and no greater demonstration of love for others than to serve them.

I served 20 years in the armed forces and retired as a MSgt. I have a monthly retirement income until my death. I was able to visit places around the world I could never have visited otherwise. Serving my country was a great honor and privilege.

Air traffic controller in military speak is "Bulldozer operator" in civilian...

Which is muuuuuuch better than military speak of IT, that is "Inventory control clerk" in civilian...

Have fun, keep your head down, and let the other guy make the mistakes...

Grats on your enlistment Moose. I had a similar situation; in 2007 when I wanted to enlist, i was 60 lbs overweight. 6 months later, I had dropped all 60 lbs and was able to follow my dreams and enlist in the Air Force as well. Im currently serving in a traditional/guardsmen status but my first enlistment was amazing and insanely rewarding. Like others have said, keep your head up and DONT let them psych you out. They cannot physically touch you like they did in the old days and you WONT get washed back unless you're truly being an idiot (even though they threaten it frequently). BTW... As odd as it sounds... EAT THE BMT FRENCH TOAST. You'll probably NEVER get french toast that is THAT amazing ever again. I STILL CRAVE IT 7 YEARS LATER....

ATC is a good job man, don't let anyone else tell you otherwise. If it's anything like the ATC guys in the Marine Corps, it's one of the most laid back jobs in the entire service. And you've got a pretty much guaranteed job when you get out.

Perhaps, however I have a friend who was an ATC on the civilian side and said it is one of the most stressful jobs out there.  On the other hand, you will be compensated well.

When you say Air Traffic Controller did you make sure they didn't mean Combat Control? My Marine recruiter "accidentally" put me down for something other than 0311... It happens just be sure it's what you want!

+1  A lot of good advice. It will be worth it in the long run. My youngest joined the Navy, after being on not such a good path. It really did change him for the better. A year later he was quite a different young man.  Our whole family is glad that he joined. I wish you the best , hope it's a great experience for you.

BTW: Don't take a lot of stuff with you, it will just get shipped home in the "box".
