Hey all,

I am hoping to get some quick advice looking over my choices. Namely the Mobo, ram(Speed/Brand/Make/ect) and cooler. I was hoping for a x99 dark announcement but with nothing from EVGA I am concerned this will not happen.

I have asked this before..but im still wrestling with getting the FTW K, the X99 classy or go with Asus. I really want to stick with EVGA- any final thoughts before I pull the trigger?

I have the classy. I would stick with the FTW K. More updated features you are more likely to use unless you are going to build a test bed or exotic cooling.

I've got a H115i - the darn thing has a rocket engine for stock fans! I replaced them with Noiseblocker eLoop B14-3 fans (105 CFM, high static pressure, but not PWM - PWM fan version is B14-PS and only has 85 CFM). They are slightly louder at full blast then the stock fans were at their lowest speed (40%), and they cool just as well at the stock fans at full blast (without the jet engine noise).

Yet I'd try out the stock fans first to see if they bother you as much as they did me. Adding 60 bucks to the price is steep, but worth it for a quiet rig.

Is this for general Windows use and gaming? If so, save your money and get a regular 1TB SSD (m.2 or SAT III). You can even get a 2TB SATA III SSD for less than that m.2 combo.

Why? You won't see any decrease in game load times or Windows boot times over a standard SATA III or m.2 SSD. You will see an increase in file transfer speeds IF the other drive/array can keep up.

If you have workloads that can utilize deep queue depths, such as a database server, then getting one of those NVME drives will help out a lot. Standard desktop use won't be helped any.

Source: My own experience with a Samsung 950 Pro 512GB NVME in a X4 PCIE 3.0 epansion card (with passive heatsink), as well as the two reviews that actually cover normal use scenarios.

Edit: Here's a review backing up my findings (the OCZ and Samsung Pro NVME drives will have similar performance) - http://techreport.com/rev...o-512gb-ssd-reviewed/4

Remember that if the software isn't written to handle it, the extra performance of a NVME drive is all but wasted.

Arestavo, thank you very much for the info. I read over the review. I do have 2X Samsung 850Pro 512Gb in raid 0 right now - which should performa as good ro better then the 850 EVO. I think I will just keep these. You sir just saved me almost 800$. Thank you!

I will be using this new drive for OS and games.

Thanks so much!

Glad that I could help out.

With two 850 Pro's you are sitting very nice.

Just so you know for future upgrades, striping (RAID 0) two SSDs together doesn't improve boot times or game load times either. It doesn't seem to hurt them either, so there is that. That could very well change if software is written to take advantage of what SSDs and NVME drives are capable of - but that is likely a long ways off.

I've been happy with G Skill RAM, and it is priced very attractively, save some green.

What are your plans for 32 GB RAM ? (kind of overkill for most, 16 GB is fine)

How many and which GPU are you planning on using ? (signature Titans ?)

What about you PSU: size & age ? (signature 1200AX ?)

Hey there Cool GTX,

For now i plan to keep my Titans and 1200AX(5 years old). No games currently require new GFX cards... if i did upgrade i might go with 2x 1080gtxs or 2x Titan GTX. Any thoughts on my 1200AX? Seems to be going strong.

Thanks!

If you make sure it is clean inside, they are solid units.

I keep mine clear of the floor on a custom stand in a climate controlled room and protected by a APC 1500 UPS, still runs strong

Quick question about the cooling. I currently have a gen 1 Corsair H100i - 3 years ish of usage(not continuous by any means). Will the 1366 socket mount work with the new 6900k? Am i better off just buying another one?

The H100 bracket is universal and so it will and should work with your 2011 socket.

Here is a shot of your MB's socket.  Great thing about the 2011 sockets is that you don't need a backplate.  All 2011 MB's come with one pre-installed and all you would need to do is just screw it down where its circled in red and pointed by the yellow arrows.

Hope this helps.

Thank you GTXJackBauer! I did try looking for the info before hand, I was concerned that the compatibility meant i might need a special bracket that I lost/dont have. Looks like i just need to screw in the heatsink and I am good to go! This helps a bunch ty!
