Haha I am well insured. Dislocated my shoulder and broke the rotator cuff about 4 months ago. Didn't even have to have surgery!

First, get a bike fit. Next, decide what you want to do with a bike. Cross Country, Offroad, urban (sorry dont memorize all the bike disciplines) and from there decide what type of bike/frame you want to get. Good brands are: Trek, Giant, Specialized, Cannondale,GT and Merida. Atleast those are what i like. Things to look out for in built bikes are: 9 speed tranny, hydro brakes (needs to bled regularly hence harder to maintain but is more reliable than mechanical especially for downhill and for hefty guys) and decent forks. Also, if you're planning on getting rough with the bike or are planning to ride regularly, get the ones with wide tubes (fat frame tubes) for durability. Its going to be heavier, but it will be tougher and the extra weight will help you push more and loose body weight. Decent forks are suntour and rockshox. Check the group set of the bike as well. If its Shimano, get the ones with atleast the Deore ones or if its SRAM, get x5 and up. If you have the dough and youre planning to ride for a long time, better get a bike assembled than getting a built one. That way you can choose your own parts. Kinda like buying parts from the egg instead of ibuypower.com. Do not forget to buy your safety gears. Get good quality brand. Spend your money wisely on the bike, spend it all you like on safety gears. A helmet and a pair of gloves and you're set, but if it was me i'd get helmet, gloves, cool oakley shades, and maybe knee pads. Padded cycling shorts will also help yer jewels and butt.

That's all i know and thats how it gets done down here. Was planning to get my first real bike, with Deore XT group set, Giant red and black theme and all the bling, but i got a red and black haf-x and red and black gt 570s and red and black classy 3 and red and black ram and so on and so forth. Maybe on my birthday then. Ride safe.

I have to disagree with you Devil, I would never get Suntour forks they blow... RockShox do make some good forks though BoXXer etc... Marzocchi's, Fox, etc are great. Also just because a bike has wide tubes or fat does not mean it is strong at all. Go look at some bikes in walmart I am sure a lot of them have fat tubes but I bet I could snap one pretty easy.

To OP here is a very good online bike store for parts.

I think there is a couple mountain biking games out there, but not sure the names. I have never really been that interested in playing any of them myself. Let me know if you find any though.

Nice ride man I used to ride Kenda Nevegal tires too, but they wore out way too fast for me. Great grip and cornering stability but man, the trails down here just chewed them up. Nice Juicy ultimate brake set too, I've been thinking about getting a set but am a little hesitant because of the carbon fiber grips that they may not take too well to being roughed up a bit.

mongoose used to be great bmx bikes. but at some point they started making the walmart mountain bikes. they still have some high end bikes. so i guess you can find a used one that is good but i would guess most will be the crappy walmart ones.

The 1st one is definitely junk. The 2nd one doesn't sound any better to be honest. As said above, Mongoose used to make good bikes and still have some good choices in the higher end, but the vast majority of their stuff is just rubbish.

It's funny as I ride my local trails I see parts of the those cheap walmart/k-mart bikes all over the place. Pieces like pedals, seats, wheels, derailleurs...ect it almost looks like a cheap bike graveyard....lol. Every time I see someone going into the trails on one of those cheapo bikes, I warn them to take it easy and try to politely tell them that they will need a better bike. Once a guy blew me off and said "this bike cost me $230 at walmart, I'm sure it will be fine" and went in.....I saw him about 30 minutes later walking out with his $230 bike and a collapsed front fork.....

Alos guys, just want to share this site with you all:

http://www.mtbr.com/

You can find forums with riders from your local area, forums specific to a certain bike manufacturer, real peoples reviews and thoughts of gear, bike, components...ect. A great resource for mountain biking in general.

Another great site is:

http://www.bikepedia.com/

Good for comparing bikes, and gear as well and doing some research.

There you go, just go walk your local bike trails and pick up the parts to make yourself a entry level bike.

Don't know about anyone else but hearing "Craigslist" just makes me think of people constantly looking out their windows to see if the police are coming.

Well the Suntour Epicon is good enough, Rockshox forks are good, Marzocchi and Fox are excellent but are quite expensive. As for wide tubes, i meant the frames like GT Avalanche, Trek 6000, etc. There are good thin frames like the Giant XTC, but i felt more secure with the Trek and GT. Recommended by my veteran biker friends too.

Thanks!
Yea this is my second set of Nevegals. They last me a while and I really love the way I can rip into turns with them.
Mavic made my wheels, but I forgot the exact model.
My hubs are Chris King like my headset, yea red anodized SRAM XO shifters, and my rear derailleur is XO red anodized as well.
Fork is a Rock Shox Lyric, I love it, but ideally I wish I had gone w/ Fox.
Bash guard was a little jacked up and I needed to clean and lube the whole bike so I removed it and ordered a new one. Hence why the bike looks so clean :).
Also I have yet to take it on a trail with the Juicy Ultimates. I installed them 4 days ago and it has been raining like all hell since. I had Juicy 7's on there before and they were amazing brakes. Very durable. I will let you know how the carbon fiber handles hold up.
Here is my favorite piece of Carbon Fiber. I barely wear it because I am afraid of eating **** and scraping it up:

Do let me know how those Juicy Ultimate brakes hold up. I can get them pretty cheap at a local store, but like I said I'm not sure how the carbon fiber handles will hold up. As for the Rock Shox Lyric, I used to ride one on my bike (Felt Redemption Team) before I moved up to the Marzocchi Bomber 55 ATA. Let me tell you, wow what a difference. This thing tracks the terrain like you wouldn't believe. Super responsive, tons of adjustments and with a 20mm thru axle can take the big hits just as well as the Lyric and is lighter and more nimble while doing it. One of the best things I did for this bike.

Nice helmet too and I know what you mean about not wanting to eat it and scratch up your nice helmet...lol. That's why I have a Fox Flux helmet that I paid $90 for that I can beat to hell and not worry about it
