Hi Guys,
This first time I install OS on 512G  M2 950 pro NVM. My X99 classy sees the ssd drive but it doesn't let OS install after entering OS key ( it shows partition and wont be moved on next step to install OS).
The ssd 950 pro nvm installed in PCIe 3.0x4 adapter and all install in PCIe 3.0 x 8 on my X99 Classy ( I don't use M2 connector that built-in on mobo, so I don't enable that M2 option in bios ). Otherwise I could not find any option for M2 on PCIe 3.0x8 that built on mobo to enable ... was I missing something ? Please instruct me how to install this!
My main Spec:
Mobo X99 Classy - Bios 2.02, Cpu 6900k-4.2g watercool , 4x4G dominator 3000 Mhz, 2x EVGA gtx 1080FE-SLI, PSU EVGA 1600W P2.
Thank you !

Did you set full UEFI mode and not legacy within the BIOS?

Did you set it to boot from the Windows Boot Manager under boot order?

That's how I've got my 950 Pro NVME working on my X99 Classified with Windows 10.

No need to set full UEFI mode. Running 750 NVMe without full UEFI. All what matters is Boot mode set to UEFI under <Boot Tab>/Fixed Boot Order Priorities. Settings in CSM doesn't matter one iota (running Legacy). If it works perfectly well on W7 rig, it has to work on 8/8.1.

Basically you shouldn't have any problems with setting up NVMe device on Classy at this moment in time. Early Samsung 941s were pain because there was no official support of any kind and board BIOS was in infancy stage. Especially if you just have one drive in the system. That's the most ideal situation.

If you use the m.2 slot I think your bandwidth will be higher. However if using a PCI-E slot you have to make sure the Windows Boot Manager is installed if using UEFI. This should occur the first time Windows formats the drive. Once that is done you need to make sure in the BIOs that the boot order puts the Windows boot manager as the 1st boot item.

Sorry to confused you guys in my first post that I mentioned it saw the drive but it didn't, that was my 4TB back up drive I didn't unplug while doing installation.
Following up your suggestion After reset to default in bios, reboot and back to bios to set boot mode to full UEFI ---> CD/DVD UEFI ----> save and exit... then after booting in to W8, enter win key then there was pop up window says it couldn't find any drive, the message: "Couldn't find any drive. To get target drive, click load driver "  ??? Weird or maybe I got the defective 950 pro SSD nvm, I'm thinking to purchase the win10 to try out  ?
    Thanks!

How and where I can download the window boot manager ? also if I use its M2 slot build-in its speed will be slower ? because of it is  pcie 2.0 ? instead of pcie 3.0x4?
    Thanks!

The Windows boot manager is created the first time you format the M.2 ssd if UEFI is actively set in the BIOs.

Try the 950 pro nvm in the m.2 slot provided on the motherboard. I have the X99 Micro 2 so hopefully it is the same m.2 slot type. When you boot for the 1st time choose UEFI but boot from a USB stick or DVD (whichever will have the Windows 10 or Windows 8 boot image). So for me I set UEFI in the BIOs. For a new samsung 950 m.2 nvme this will not be seen in the BIOs right away. So set to boot from USB or DVD. Save the changes. Now it will boot from the Windows 10/8 setup. Your drives should be seen to include the NVMe SSD. Choose that and choose to install. After the install is finished boot back into the BIOs and select Windows Boot manager instead of USB or DVD.

Careful when formatting M.2 SSDs.  During the XP941 days, we were advised not to use format because it would wipe it for dead.  It happened to some unfortunately.  Not sure why but we were advised to just delete the partition and recreate one.  These are chips and not disks so I'm not sure if that is the reason or what not.

RJ- The X99 Classy is only 2.0 PCIe M.2.  The OP is better off using a adapter to the PCIe 3.0 Lanes for full operations.

Use this Associate Code at your checkouts or follow these instructions for Up to 10% OFF on all your EVGA purchases:

    • Install the drive in any PCIe Slot using your adapter.
    • Make sure CSM is set to Disabled in the Boot tab of the BIOS.
    • Optional: Disconnect any other drive in the system (protect any drives from accidental deletion).
    • Boot up into the windows installer, and delete all partitions off the SSD so it's just a single "unallocated area", and click install. (You do not need to click create partition - simply clicking install will do all of the things automatically for you).
    • Once installation is complete, you can simply boot up and continue installation of software/drivers etc.

    - You can see your drive is being detected in the bios by checking the PCIe Configuration Page in Advanced tab of the BIOS, it will show the Lanes (x1 x4 x8 x16 etc) and the speed (1.0 2.0 3.0 etc) the device is running at.
    - You should keep the SSD in the PCIe x4 3.0 adapter since the built in M.2 slot on the motherboard is only 2.0, you will be restricting the drive considerably by running it off the built in M.2 slot.
    - In the boot menu the drive will appear something like N1 Samsung 950 as a boot option at the top of the screen, and in the boot priority it will show "Windows Boot Manager".

    Hope this helps :)

    Hi Valkyrie,
Thank you for your response , I did try all you guys suggestions but I don't know why it was not effect on my system, maybe I'm noob somehow :-) ? I purchased win10-64, resotored bios to default/enable boot mode to UEFI then re boot and I went thru everything, it sees 950 pro nvm drive ... installed successfully. I will be tried one more time the win8 on my next 950 for my sister pc upgrade . Amazing this drive 950 seems to faster than my previous 2x 256 850 pro in raid0.

Very Appreciated for all you Guys's helps ! :-))

    Re: How to install win8 OS with M2 512 950 Pro NVM ! 2016/07/04 00:08:54 (permalink)
Win8 handles installing a little differently, if the drive is not formatted for GPT partitions (it sometimes is not when it comes as new out the box) windows will install in legacy mode even though your bios is is UEFI mode.

Windows 10 seems to convert the partition style automatically.

So if you still struggle to install win8, boot up using a different install on a hdd, and use diskpart to make sure the drive is in gpt mode.

    From command prompt:
diskpart (to get the disk partitioner tool)
list disk (if the ssd is already listed with a * in the gpt collumn, you can try this anyway)
select disk x (where x = the number of the disk that is your ssd in the previous list)
clean (wipes the drive by removing all partition data, it does not do any destructive formatting dont worry)
    convert gpt

You can now type list disk again to see that it has actually been converted, you should now be able to reboot and install windows 8.

Another thing i had trouble with was installers, when i tried to install using the ISO i couldnt get it to install in uefi mode. I had to use a tool from microsoft to format a usb automatically to make it install properly. A bit of a pain in the bum but ive done it plenty of times so installs just go smoothly for me.
