Okay I'm a complete noob with linux so I'm going to have a lot of questions. I've installed ubuntu and did the updates also activated the nvida drivers. Since I'm not familiar with navigating in linux how do I get the to the area where I use the $ sign also, in the directions to get the client from stanford so I type in the whole link to stanford? Do I need to type in anything special to get the new hefty bigadv's running? Sorry if these sound dumb. I have a bigadv on windows that will finish in the morning (when I'm on duty at the firehouse) so I used the oneunit flag. I'd like to get all my questions/research done before I try this Friday. Thanks for any help!

So if I add smp-12 it will pick up the new bigadv's?

Use the Terminal in Applications - Accessories (assuming your using the Gnomw desktop). Just use the bigadv flag as indicated. Good luck and have fun.

I'm been running the Wubi install of Ubuntu 11.04 since last Saturday. I processed a complete 6903 on my SR-2 with no issues. I grabbed another 6903 yesterday morning and it was at 24% when I went to bed last night. Came in this morning and my Ubuntu screen was totally non-functional (frozen). The screen was there, but no mouse, no keyboard and I could see (via the Terminal window) that the 6903 had not progressed overnight. I tried all sorts of keyboard actions to try and regain some control of Ubuntu but it was hosed solid, so I had to do a power restart of the SR-2. Long story short, when I mined for information on Ubuntu lockups/freezes there were quite a few reports of freezes with Ubuntu and the only thing that I saw that seemed to be a good thing to do was to update the Ubuntu Kernel from what is included with the installation file. The Ubuntu 11.04 install uses Kernel ver 2.6.38-8 and the latest Kernel is 2.6.39-0. The newer Kernel is supposed to correct a host of issues, so I updated to that Kernel this morning before resuming the 6903 WU. Here is a guide to installing the new Kernel if anyone is interested: http://www.addictivetips....04-kernel-to-2-6-39-0/ Thankfully, the 6903 resumed exactly where it left off. I've read of issues with Ubuntu/Folding where the WU is lost and a new one starts instead. I'll have to see if the 11.04 system freeze is helped by installing the new Kernel.

I read that if your system meets the requirements -bigadv flag is all you need to get a 6903. I have not changed my flag from -bigbeta yet.

Tank, Before the 6903 went "public" you had to use the -bigbeta argument to get one. We're told that now all you need is to use -bigadv. I have not tried to get a 6903 since it went public (still working on the one I got this past Tuesday via -bigbeta). Of course, we all know that using -bigadv results in getting any of several bigadv WUs. I expect that is the way it has to be since they don't want us cherry-picking for a specific bigadv WU. When the 6903 I'm running finishes, I'll be using the -bigadv argument since that is what they want us to do from what I'm reading. I wonder if getting a 6903 will be similar to what we have seen in getting a 6900/6901? Seems most of the time I request a bigadv, I get either a 6900 or 6901 with the occasional 2684/5/6 mixed in. I'll just have to consider it a treat when I get a 6903 in the future like I used to feel about the 6900 (my past favorite).

Is this new WU going to be linux only, or are they going to release it for windows as well?

The way it has been worded is "Linux initially" which would lead one to interpret that a Windows version of the 6903 may come. I haven't seen any mention of when we may expect a Windows 6903 though. With this being my first encounter with a new WU that is only Linux, I don't know what to expect in terms of time-frame for a Windows version. I'm ready for the Windows version even if it isn't as fast vs Linux because I'd rather run just the one OS.

texinga Thankfully, the 6903 resumed exactly where it left off. I've read of issues with Ubuntu/Folding where the WU is lost and a new one starts instead. This is an issue with VMWare and Ubuntu. I haven't figured out yet how to use the backup script that allows you to restore from a hourly backup.

Yes, I recall reading a post by Grandpa_01 over on the FAH forums that he makes a copy of his fah folder ever so often during a WU. Then when a disaster strikes, he follows some process (that I don't 100% understand) to restore that fah folder. Seems he makes sure his internet connection is off, restores the fah folder and whatever else he does. I'm so new to Ubuntu that I sometimes have trouble "reading between the lines" of what a person is actually doing.

Great to hear you are configured and running Linux Tank!! A 6903 will be along soon I'm sure. I don't think I've taken the opportunity to thank Rklapp, so here's a big THANK-YOU for putting this guide together for us! They already awarded you a Blue Ribbon for it, and that is rightly deserved for this effort and help. I do have a question for you RK. In the section that speaks to getting "Temperature Monitoring" setup, is says "Right click on one of the top or bottom task bars and select "Hardware Sensors Monitor". This will show the temps for each gpu and each physical core." I did reboot after setting-up the lm-sensors utility and followed what you wrote to do in your guide. However, I could not find a "Hardware Sensors Monitor" selection when I right-clicked anywhere and I tried everything on the screen, top menu bar, etc to see if there was a selection that I could enable. I can run the sensors app from a Terminal command to get all the sensors to report that way, but that is it. Edit: I just noticed that you made a comment "(assuming you are using the Classic Desktop)". I'm not running the Classic Desktop, so that must be why I can't find the selection that you mentioned. Never mind....

So far using linux I've cut about a minute from my TPF, I know that doesn't sound huge but it's not too bad for me since I couldn't shave any time in windows. 6901 @ 4.0gHz 8g ram = TPF of 22 min.

Congrats, you should be getting 60k ppd from that. Thank you everyone for your comments. In Ubuntu, I would copy and paste the folding folder to make a copy when I want to Ctrl-C the client. When it reloads the wu back to 0%. I stop and run the backup. This has worked for me twice so far. Blocking the internet is to ensure that the restarted client doesn't tell Stanford that the wu failed but this hasn't been an issue with me so far. Because VMWare is on a huge image, this technique is not feasible so I need to figure out the backup script or never stop the client. There's probably some way of running the Hardware Sensors Monitor in the Unity desktop but haven't figured it out yet. I don't have motivation because I'm perfectly happy with the classic Gnome desktop.

click on applications( for me with 11.04) its a + sign on the left of the desktop, then click on installed to expand and scroll down to terminal. Or left click on little ubuntu emblem at top left, click more apps to get to terminal icon and click on that.

Not sure how you hid the terminal. There are multiple desktops that it could be hiding in. You might be able to use administration -> system monitor to pull up the program. I'm not sure because I'm traveling and not at my computer. texinga RK, Regarding using that fah folder backup in the event of a restart from 0%. Before I use Ctrl-C, I right click on the folder and select copy, then paste next to it to create a "folding (copy)" folder. If the wu goes haywire, then switch over to the "folding (copy)" folder in Terminal and run the fah command again. I can then delete the original folding folder. I've only had to do this twice before.

i definitely did that the first time, but this time the applett actually showed up to select. thank you very much. another question, do i always have to launch HFM from the command prompt, or can i just click on it somewhere? its kind of irritating to have to keep the prompt open all the time. I changed the preference-options to task bar.

I changed the preference-options to task bar. Yes, I got tired (quick) of typing those discrete commands too. You'll need to create a Launcher (similar to a Windows shortcut) by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Create Launcher". It will default to "Application" in the "Type" field and that is OK. Then in the "Name" field, type in the name/title of your choice for the desktop icon it will create (HFM, etc). Then in the "Command" field, use the "Browse" button to browse over to the HFM folder (or wherever you installed HFM) and select the HFM.exe file. Click OK on the Create Launcher window to close and save. Then you will have an icon on your desktop that you can use to startup HFM rather than typing commands into the Terminal Window.
