I have seen several threads since the GTX 680 launch in March where folders didn't like the fact that folding on a GTX 6xx card required the use of the V7 client. It is possible to fold on Kepler GPUs (GTX 6xx) with FAH GPU Tracker V2 and the old V6 clients. I have compiled a modified build of FAH GPU Tracker V2 that works without requiring users to manually edit client.cfg.

1. Download this modified build of FAH GPU Tracker V2 with Kepler GPU support:
Download from fahtracker.com
Download from jedi95.com

2. If you don't already have the Tracker installed, you can follow the guide HERE. Otherwise just replace your existing FAH GPU Tracker V2.exe with the one in the archive.

You should see this message in the log on startup if you are running the modified build:

3. Download FahCore_15.exe version 2.24:
Download from fahtracker.com
Download from jedi95.com

4. Copy the downloaded FahCore_15.exe to any GPUX subfolder that corresponds to a Kepler GPU. Replace the existing FahCore_15.exe if present. The V6 clients will not automatically download the 2.24 version of Core 15 required for this to work.

5. Set Force GPU to Nvidia Fermi and enable the GPU3 client for each Kepler GPU. GPU detection will not work correctly for these cards. You also need to check the box for "enable -advmethods"

The configuration should look like this for a single GTX 6xx card:

NOTE: The modified build of the Tracker replaces -advmethods with -betateam for GPU clients configured with force GPU=Nvidia Fermi so you don't need to manually edit client.cfg. If you are NOT using the modified build you need to DISABLE -advmethods and manually add -betateam to the extra_params= section of client.cfg

6. Start folding as usual and it should work.

To confirm that you correctly replaced FahCore_15.exe look for these lines in FAHlog.txt:
 [23:17:13] Folding@Home GPU Core
[23:17:13] Version                2.24 (Thu Feb 23 13:21:02 PST 2012)
[23:17:13] Build host             ASUS_Laptop
[23:17:13] Board Type             NVIDIA/CUDA
[23:17:13] Core                   15
Make sure you have version 2.24.

NOTE: The GPU load doesn't instantly max out. You will see something similar to this:

So are you saying there possibly an update to the most awesome folding software in existence?

No, this build is nothing more than a quick change to replace -advmethods with -betateam in certain cases (when folding on GTX 6xx) There really isn't much more that can be done with the V6 clients. Supporting V7 would require a complete rewrite of the Tracker, and I don't have the time or motivation to take on a project of that size right now.

I asked this question in a thread on the folidng forum, would I need to utilize this method to fold on a GT 640 since it is apparently Kepler architecture?

Thanks for the guide Jedi!  Does anyone have data on PPD for the 680/670 using this new FahCore?

Despite following the instructions I can't get this to work on either on my GPUs. Obviously I am doing something wrong.

Could you post LOG.txt and FAHlog.txt from the affected GPUs?

You need -advmethods on GPU0. With the modified build this actually adds -betateam instead (which is required for this to work)

LOG.txt is in the Tracker's main folder. (same folder as FAH GPU Tracker V2.exe, FAH_GPU3.exe, ect)

OK, I got as far as downloading the Core_15 file, and now I'm just lost. Where do I put them? How do I know which one of these GPU options in the program is my video cards? Sorry, I just really new to this after my first build, (2x evga 670 ftw) and I'm kind of lost :P

    Good question...

Depending on where you have your Tracker Folder... Once you open it it should look something like the pic below. We then copy and paste the FahCore_15 into the folders. I simply added it to all of mine, but the first two are normally all you need if you are running two cards... I am still trying to get mine going, so I cannot be of further help (Assuming my info is correct) but more folks will be along shortly

Welcome, and thank you for your help!!

I for the life of me cannot get this to work. I get to about 25% compete on two 680's and boom.. Driver stops responding and the WU restarts... Over and over and over...

Your OC might be too high. At least with my GTX 680 I have to drop about 25MHz from my 100% game stable clocks in order to not fail WUs with UNSTABLE_MACHINE.

Really wish it was possible to up the voltage on these cards without hardmodding.....

I don't fold with any OC since it isn't worth the lost WU's.  PPD doesn't suffer much (it's already too low )

Still running V7 with client type 'beta' and deleted the old fahcore_15 in beta directory, then it downloaded the latest 2.24.  Funny thing is Norton kept deleting the file as suspicious.  Guess they don't trust Pande.  Had to set an exception and now pulling a paltry 17k PPD on the new 670 FTW (1202 factory boost).

Plan to change over to the Jedi way of folding... this weekend.  V7 is a PITA.

Are you speaking on the GPU or System? GPU's are factory clocks, and the System I dropped to the factory OC... This changed nothing for me... Same 25% complete... BOOM...

Small update. I am only running one 680 now, and it is cranking along with NO issues. I will let it run all day to see if I get credits then test the other card on it's own.

My suspicion... SLI needs to be removed when Folding again.

After a clean install and fresh start I believe I have the client folding now

OK.... Several days of testing. I "Can" get both GTX 680's to fold at the same time. However, their production is cut in half . SO instead of 17k ppd I get 8500ppd per card.

Shut down or even just stop the GPU1... bam... 17k on GPU0 again. SO I will be happy for now running a single 680 and call it good...

BTW... Just wanted to add... And not sure it matters... I am only using Surround. I have not tried to reduce this system down to one monitor... So it may be the Nvidia Software fighting the V2

If surround is causing a problem then it's not something I can fix. Bugs of this nature are in the FAH client itself. Keep in mind that Tracker V2 is only an interface to control the FAH clients. As long as the clients are being started with the right config then the vast majority of problems from that point on are with the FAH clients/GPU drivers/OC settings

Based on that line it looks like OC stability problems. Try running at stock clocks if you haven't already.
