I'm thinking about getting my desktop back up and running as I had to sell my 480s to make some ends meet about 6 months back. Most games worked "OK" but I was starting to feel the limits of the 1.5 GB VRAM.
I want to do triple SLi again but was wondering what the best option would be.
With 4GB of VRAM would it be enough to get the 980s or 970s, or should I splurge and get Titans with their 12GB of VRAM?

What do you all think?

I just started getting in to racing sims and REALLY miss my Surround setup :'(

So, if you buy a 980, it can handle that descently but a 980 SLI would be perfect (80+FPS). As for the TITANX, that would handle it just fine. I don't know the comparison of the SLI vs. TITANX but I would imagine the SLI may be better in most practical situations (not synthetic). Also, supossedly the 980ti is better than the TITANX but the release date is unknown.

If I were you, I would do the 980SLI w/750-850W PSU.

with that resolution it comes to just under 7 million pixels (6912000) So with that information you can see that most 4k benchmarks will be relevant to your resolution as well. If you have the money, I would suggest the titan x over 2x gtx 980's.

I run 5840x1080 with one titan x, I originally bought two but one died waiting on replacement. So for now I've been using one and everything runs great with one card. I play bf4 on ultra no aa, bf hardline ultra no aa, wow ultra with some fxaa, all run 70 to 100+ fps very smooth. Evolve on high with no aa I get about 50 fps but very smooth. As far as vram I haven't seen anything over 4.5 gb. I'm running 3xvg248qe monitors.

I think I will just "go for it" and get 3 Titan Xes' (is that how it's spelled)

In my signature is how my machine is setup minus the video cards and the ram is denominator platinum now but should my x79 dark be up to the task or should I also factor in a 4930k too?
Or hell, should I scrap it all and go x99?

X79 with 3930k or a 4930k should have no problems running the setup.  If you go X99 you will not notice the difference in normal day to day activities including gaming.  The difference is minimal if at all.  Now with synthetics you will probably do a bit better with an X99 and a 5960x if that's what you are chasing.

With that I'll just stick to the x79 and maybe get a 4930k for extra PCI-e 3.0 lanes.

Well the 3930k will already give you the extra PCI 3 lanes you need for 3 / 4 way sli.  You get that with the X79 MB just like the X99.  I use to have a 3930k that I could hit 5ghz with at 1.4, I had a 4930k that no matter what I did I hit a wall at 4.4ghz.  You will get a slightly more power friendly CPU with the 4930k vs the 3930k but you will likely lose out on OC potential.  My current 5930k gets me 4.6 at 1.36, I haven't tried any further yet.

Thanks for verifying. I just ordered a third monitor for my 2-way SLI 980 rigs. Glad it rocks. Are you having any issues with the display spanning 3 monitors?

Honestly, it's mostly dependent on the game itself; E:D works flawlessly with it in my experience. There are a few games, like Rocksmith 2014, which blank the side monitors and only display on the primary. The game still runs, just not on all three monitors.  Less modern games might have an issue with it, as they may allow you to set the resolution to the full resolution and even display it, but may not scale properly.

When my rig last worked I lived on the wide screen gaming forums and they usually have guides on how to fix games that have issues with Surround or eyefinity.

I'm thinking about picking up a 4k tv for the accessory display and mounting it over my monitors but even with the thought of buying 3 Titans I think that's overkill, lol.

I'm late to the party but I run 5760x1080 with 2 x EVGA GTX FTW 980 @ 1405 mhz core no problem. WSGF.org will definitely be your friend but you will be pleasantly surprised at how far Nvidia surround has developed.  "Flawless wide screen" is such a nice utility with great support from their small dev team. I've donated a few bucks to them on several occasions. I do plan on "upgrading" to 1 single UWQHD display, most noteworthy is the curved ACER 34" predator 3440x1400 144hz with Gsync rumor.

Games I've played and had a great overall and ~60 FPS experience with:
  • Dragon age inquisition (With some of the AA turned off)
  • Talos Principle
  • Far Cry 4 (Some AA off most settings on high)
  • Dying Light (SLI problems but i still had a very good experience with frame rate and detail levels)
  • Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Skyrim
TLDR: 2 x 980s will game in Nvidia surround just fine with AA / MSAA / FXAA turned down or off. (I can rarely tell the difference from say 8x AA to 4x or "low".

***Important to note: With rumors about DX12 and Windows 10, in regards to both GPU Vram "pooling" (I'm still skeptical but we will see) and the raw performance gains, 2 x 980s is a solid choice.  If you have money to burn scoop up a pair of titan X.  If you have patience, grab a pair of 980ti 6gb and OC them.***

Good luck man, please let us know what you end up doing.

After reading the entire thread I think it's important to note that at nearly 7 million pixels most types of "traditional" AA just aren't feasible.  If you're willing to ditch the post processing stuff including AA / FXAA / MSAA then you will crush all modern games for a while with 2 x 980s.  2 x Titan X will monster truck everything for a few years at least at that res.

However, I'm confident that DX12 will be VERY refreshing and allow much more performance out of our current cards than most expect.

So coming down to the "I can buy this right now" time and I am staring at 3 of these in my Amazon.com Cart http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00R3NK340/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I am fairly certain that the Ti version of the 980 or something like that may be coming out in the next 90 days so should I go ahead and get them and just do the step up latter?

Or just buy the Titans.

3 Titan X seems like overkill for any situation. Plus, you are hitting diminishing returns pretty hard on that third card, but you are still paying $1000. I would recommend trying dual titan-x first. You can always buy a third card later.

Dual 980's would also work too, but if DX12 doesn't deliver on vram pooling you may find yourself hitting the 4gb wall.

Do you only have 16gb of ram in your PC? Keep in mind that Titan X requires 24gb of system ram to properly use all 12gb of vram. You CAN run it without 24gb, but you may not use all 12gb of your vram.(Please feel free to research this, I know there are MANY opinions out there on this topic.)

I get away with a single GTX 970 SC running 5780x1080 at 144Hz(desktop native resolution) (4800x800 in GTA V) across 3 monitors, with playable settings (35-60+ FPS) on ultra/high
Who needs 4k when you can have 5k gaming? Oh yeah!
Note I will be getting another 970 in a year or two!
But to answer your question you could get away in reality with a single 970

Re: How much horsepower do I need for 5760x1200 2015/05/19 11:06:52 (permalink)
I have one Titan X and run GTA5 at 60-70fps at 6030x1080 (bezel corrected) with almost all the eye candy turned on plus FXAA (no MSAA TXAA). Highly recommend it. Prior to that I had a GTX 690 and ran surround for years with nearly all my games. I do have to question your choice in monitors though. A 60hz monitor just doesn't do it for me anymore. I get you're going for the 16:10 aspect ratio, but I'd take a 120hz+ monitor over the 3/4 inches vertical res you'd gain. You definately don't need THREE Titan X's for a 60hz monitor. Remember, your FPS is effectively capped at the monitor refresh rate. You can get three, but try to find 144hz monitors or something.

Shoot, if I had three Titan X I'd go for 3x1440p. Now THAT would be something.

Also, I agree with the other guys, get familiar with the WSGF, and Flawless Widescreen. Required stuff in my opinion.

980 SLI if no MSAA ro FXAA. If you want MSAA go TITANX SLI.

I too have a wonderful time with gaming on a single 780 classified, running three 144hz monitors set at 120Hz 5760x1080. Never clocked it. I just installed it and run it.

I too plan to get a second one and that rumored curved ACER 34" predator 3440x1400 144hz monitor...

Exactly.  I was wondering how they could pull that off.  It is somewhere buried on the Acer site, but these guys are very reliable.
