So the good news is that here in California, Frontier has acquired Verizon in April and they have been making improvments to some of their services. My DSL was capped at 3M but after kicking and screaming long enough, they are bumping me to 7M for the same price. The bad news is, they can not offer basic phone service that Verizon had. My bill has been right around $60 every month ,$35 for dsl internet and $19.99 for basic phone service with no long distance or anything else. Even though their website states different pricing, after spending over 3 hours on the phone with them, they stated that their lowest price for just phone service is more than $50 because of some stupid contract thing with California, Texas and Flordia. Pushing aside the fact that no one uses a phone line anymore, and the option of VOIP and everything else;

What do you guys pay or have seen advertised for basic phone service in your area?

I want to know because I may have to build a case against Frontier with the Public Utilities Commission and they base "reasonable rates" from surrounding areas. Even if everything goes to pot, at least I have more than twice as fast internet soon!

ATT has been bought out also and my download is 15mb down 1.5mb up and I pay around 55.00 with phone service no long distance my problem with them is Ping 20ms and it seems to Hang the pages. I dont know what it does in my Games but I figure it is not Good. The server is located quite aways away. Approx 4hrs drive time. Which would calculate into 240 miles.

That's basically what AT&T is doing to me. $65/month for both phone and DSL, with their "fiber optic cable". It's a joke, but I will see what happens in Oct. when I cancel the phone service.
'cause apparently my friend has Verizon and get's charged roughly the same, and has amazing download speeds without the phone service. I'd rather go with that

No home phone line, just internet for about $50/month with charter. Don't really see why anyone needs a home phone anymore..

Im forced to buy phone service with my internet package. About an extra $25-$30 a month if I remember right. Really wish I could drop the phone service and just get a better internet plan.

My cell phone service is less than spectacular and sometimes I will look down and see that I have 3 voice mails and since I deal with emergency calls for my work, I have to have a secondary line. Otherwise, I could care less about a landline. I get about 3 calls a day all from telemarketers.

I have switched from Vonage $32.95 to Basic Talk for $12.95 a month in Kansas. Vonage was $19.95 for a promotional period. Basic Talk works just as good. Before that we had AT&T for $80 a month.

They don't have it quite far enough. They are expanding fast but I am about 10 miles too far. I would love to have twc at my house.

I had a landline for a short time as part of a three-way bundle from Verizon. I convinced them to let me out of that contract and get the same discounted internet and TV prices without the phone service. Landlines are only good for 800 numbers and telemarketing calls.

Well, from all these responses, it sure sounds like I am getting drug through the mud by frontier. I can't fathom how a simple landline with no long distance or features can not be offered and if I want phone, it's over 50 bucks a month (then 35 for internet) for their cheapest package. The PUC states that the phone company must offer a "reasonable" phone option and that they base the term "reasonable" by the going rate of the surrounding areas. The other crappy part about it is that I have worked for Verizon (and now Frontier) for over 10 years and when I asked about my employee discount, they loled at me since I am "only" a subcontractor. Whatever...

Although it was a while ago and prices have obviously increased I was basically paying $33 for each service. '3 for 99' it was called and after I cancelled the phone service my rates dropped to $76 per month becasue I paid an additional $10 for the expanded channel package so I could watch SyFy, Discovery Channel, TBS, FX, etc. Almost each year I had to increase my internet speeds or lose my extra channels and is how I got up to $117 per month for FiOS 25/25 and the Premium Channel Package.

AT&T did that to me with their "special promotion". If I cancel their promotion, they'll hit me with some kind of early cancellation fee and plus more fees. I'm waiting for October to hit to see what they're going to charge me for just straight internet.

Wow, including tax I pay the exact same (105 USD) for a landline, no TV, and 50 mbps down. Man I hate living in the middle of nowhere.

    Heh, NYC prices:

Verizon wireless - 2 cellphone lines, unlimited talk, text, roaming anywhere in US, 12GB/month data (shared), $160/month. On the expensive side, but very good coverage.

Optimum Online - Cable TV premium package (includes HBO etc etc), home phone, high speed internet 101mbps down, 35mbps up - was paying just on $200/month as a package for all that, but recently downgraded the cable tv part to standard which dropped price to $175/month. Unfortunately for the last month or so we have been having very low internet speeds from about 10:30pm thru to 2:30am every night without fail, where the upload speed drops to around 0.3mbps, while download speed drops down to about 20-50mbps and very choppy. The low upload speed makes gaming impossible, and those hours are about the only times I have time to sit down and play a bit, so it's been highly frustrating. Had a tech out here several weeks ago and checked everything but it's all good inside, so they have 'narrowed it down' to to something outside, but still the same issue persists.. personally I am thinking they have a load balance issue and/or some prat uploading huge amounts of data late at night and filling the pipe, but they don't want to admit it's possibly just overcrowding on the network because all these big ISPs hate spending money on infrastructure. Amazingly enough, the area manager called me a few days ago to apologize and say they are working on it, and gave me a credit of about $50/month for the next 12 months... I wasn't expecting that, but I'd still rather have the speeds I'm paying for than a credit for not getting those speeds. Unfortunately Verizon FIOS is not available at my location, even though it is across the road and also a few doors up the road on my side.. and no other providers whatsoever, so it's just Optimum Online or Verizon DSL, lol - some choice, which is probably why they charge as much as they do.

We use the home phone for international calling rates as well - overseas calls from the cellphones are much more expensive, and far FAR more expensive for family overseas to call us.

Ooma. Have had it for going on 3 years this September and have saved a ton of money. All you pay is local taxes. Which in my area is $4.23 a month. A shame I did not get Ooma years ago. Because those people that did. They are grandfathered in with out having to pay local taxes. Sadly Ooma has been forced to collect taxes on all new customers. I cant say enough about Ooma though. Great service and very reliable.

I pay about €48 (incl tax) to Telia for 12-30 Mbit/s down and 0-12 Mbit/s up. Includes landline phone (dirt cheap calling), router and 2 lifetime subscriptions for F-secure. They're not the cheapest but they do have the best customer support.

Ooma is VoIP phone service - you still need an internet connection though.

No home phone line, just internet for about $50/month with charter. Don't really see why anyone needs a home phone anymore..

Speaking of which, I got three of those calls today - one on my cellphone while I was at work, they were wanting to refinance my student loan with the Obama special refinance package (even though I paid off my student loan about 7 years ago), then one at home that was Officer Steve Madden (seriously) from the US Treasury warning me I would be arrested and brought in front of a magistrate if I didn't pay them thousands of dollars for something, and when asked, they said they were based in California, Washington DC (who knew California was a part of Washington DC?), and almost immediately after that, a call from Canada Pharmacy trying to renew my prescription over the phone (what prescription?) if I give them my credit card details. After playing dumb for a little while and asking them some really stupid questions (and getting some even more stupid answers, such as California being part of Washington DC), I gave all of them the same sage advise: that they should go suck on a specific anatomical part, and do so all night long.

The student loan one was a new one for me, but I've had the threat of arrest one once before (it was the IRS last time, lol). The Canada Pharmacy one only started recently but I've had that one half a dozen times so far. I've had the Microsoft one numerous times - that's just beyond stupid, but it's the "refinance your credit card debt" calls that really get to me (I have no credit card debt btw). They have been hounding us mercilessly for well over 10 years, sometimes several times a day including early Sunday mornings etc., with breaks of a couple of weeks every now and then until they start up again. I have tried everything to stop them but to no avail - it's gone WAY beyond harassment to the point now that if I EVER meet one of these people, I will be hard pressed not to put a serious hurt on them, and I am quite sure I would be regarded a national hero if I did. I've registered hundreds of complaints to the govt 'do not call' registry over the years but they don't do a damn thing - there must be millions upon millions of complaints about that company but they just never stop. I hate them, they invade our privacy, they mock you if you try to be civil with them, they ignore the requests to remove you from their call lists, seriously, the CEO of that company should be publicly tortured for days on end as an example to all others, and every employee of that company and their family members should be flogged and given some sort of sub-citizen status where they have no civil rights whatsoever for life - THAT would get the message through loud and clear. I hate that company with a passion, and would love to wake up one morning and see in the news that someone finally got hold of those responsible and went totally postal on them. They do not deserve to live.

The thing is, the calls you are getting are robo calls and the do not call registry does not work. Most of the time, they do not know who they are calling, it is random. Is it illegal? Of course but we all still get them every week.

The best thing you can do is waste their time. When I get a call, I let them tell me how they can get me awesome credit. Then they tell me that they can see how I have been making all my payments on time (even if I have never banked with the company they claim to represent) they will then ask how much you owe or/and what your current rate is. (They can see that you have been making payments but yet they don't seem to have any other info???) I used to just ask them if they know my name and they catch on and hang up.

Now, I hurry up and pull up a fake credit card generator online and provide them very, very slowly with all my personal details. Then they put me on hold and the foreign (usually) noob level 1 guy will get back on the phone and act all confused. Then they put you on hold again and you speak to a level 2 person that says there is something wrong with the account and ask if there is another card you can use. That's when I get creative. Sometimes I will start to cry and explain to them that my wife took my card and is cheating on me with multiple men (at the same time) and I then provide very vivid details of how I came to discover that my wife was cheating and how she "took everything" and ran up my card. They do the best they can to get you back on track but as soon as they push for more details, I cry even harder or I will go complete bat-crap crazy and will start making beeping noises or I will just repeat nonsense phrases such as "Give me back my mayonnaise, I know you took it!"
I have even changed my voice and started up a new character to waste more time. Sometimes it starts with an old man voice and then I will change into the caregiver that had his wallet stolen by "old man Jenkens" and explain that he will be taken back to his room.
Whatever I feel like at the time. My record is 46 minutes on the phone with these companies.

The only way to stop the people from doing it is have an insider tell you where they are located, which would probably never happen. If it did, someone would get throat punched over and over and over and over and then I would remove the persons ability to speak by uppercutting them in the jaw while their tongue was out so they could never call anyone again. but that's just me.
