I think a well-overclocked 480 (I'm at 850 core 2100 mem also) is only going to bridge the gap between then 480 and 580 - benchmark results suggest it's right between the two in terms of performance.

is it safe to run those OC's on air or is it much better to be water cooled? What do you guys use to adjust the voltages on the 480s?

Either way is fine long as you control the temps.  I never could hit 900core with the reference cooler even with the fan at 100%.  For voltage Afterburner.

the point is that the 580 is a better OCer....

you can take your 480 to 850/1700 but if you OC the 580 it should go over 900mhz....

The point at wich a GTX480 is on roughly even ground with a GTX580 would be about 825/1650/4000. If you're talking about just getting roughly the same performance, that's about what you need. The memory doesn't need to clock any higher than what a GTX580 is at since they are both 384bit interface DDR5 memory. Only the core and shader need be higher to match a GTX580.

Apart from the features you can't adjust (like number of ROP's), if you match the shader fill rate and memory bandwidth, then that's a start.

Shader fill rate is the number of shaders times the shader frequency, i.e. 480 x 1500Mhz = 720,000 mega pixels per second

Memory bandwidth is the effective clock times the interface width divide by 8 bits per byte, i.e. 4Ghz x 384-bit / 8 = 192GB/s

Do the math yourself and don't obcesss over getting a certain frequency number if it doesn't happen.  Each graphics card is different and we're only gauranteed what we buy.

Note: If overclocking were truly safe, then we could just buy it that way instead of doing it ourselves, why go through the trouble?  In otherwords, it isn't, but rather a risk we benefit from in short-term.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

@ lephron both the GTX480 and GTX580 have 48 ROPs and a 384bit memory interface. The real difference is that the GTX480 GF100 core has 480 cores and 60 TMUs while the GTX580 GF110 core has 512 cores and 64 TMUs.

480/60 =8, 512/64 =8, doesn't seem like the TMU's are independant from the number of parallel processors enabled, per se.  Don't know the details of the die, do you happen to know how ROP's are tied in if they are constant despite the number of shaders/TMU's?

I know that this is a stupidly old thread, but I'm still having a blast with my 480.

870/2025 @1.088v sitting around 65-70 under full load with a custom water setup. Severly limited by my PSU. Can't up the GPU without increasing the voltage. Increase the voltage and the PSU hits a cut out and shuts down the entire PC.

Wow, you really need to upgrade your PSU if it's running that close to the edge. My quad Haswell + 480 FTW Hydro system is around 350-400 watts, and that's with a MCP655 pump and 7 fans included. Even EVGA's own 500w PSU will run that kind of load without complaint.

I'm running a 775 board, so next stop is a modded 771 Xeon processor to squeeze more life out of it. Anything after that is going to be for a whole new machine.

I think that's only losing time.
Even with highest overclock you can't get more than 2-3 fps in new games.
Min fps will probably stay same. It's time for something newer. GTX970 FTW + Z97 FTW + i5-4670K example.
I hope EVGA will start to sell soon EVGA GTX970 SSC with Titan based cooler. There are lot of space for overclock and excellent for SLI because such setup will be stronger than Titan Black Successor.

Planning on upgrading soon, but still trying to "kill" my GTX480SC SLI setup at 920mhz @1.138v 2000mhz mem. Of course under water, max temps I've seen are still about 51-53*C range... Running good old Koolance blocks w/ IC Diamond applied only the one time when installing the blocks....

Planning on upgrading to the GTX980 when the Ti version comes out, or whatever it's called...

wow, crazy to see people hitting such high clocks on the 480's. I have one in my work PC, and I wouldn't dare both touching the voltage being as I am on the stock cooler which hits 93C with any 3D Application, which leaves me around 800Mhz on the core w/o voltage increase.  I imagine a 480 at 850Mhz should come close to 580 performance for sure! That's a pretty impressive overclock really.

Pretty impressive your card is stable at 800Mhz at that high a temp! I have a 480 FTW hydro that just barely hits 800Mhz stable at stock vcore around 55c. I played with it at 1.2v and >900Mhz for awhile, and I don't remember what the temps were at to say, but the power consumption went through the roof. I just leave it at stock these days as I didn't feel the crazy power/heat increase was worth it. It's crazy to realize a Titan Black can fit inside the same power consumption level with some room to spare...

I was stable between 96-99 at closer to 850 on stock air.

This is on stock heatsink and fan with some assistance from other fans. 1.088 volts.
