One thing I'll add is I have an EVGA 650 GQ power supply that is only a few months old. I have heard the coil whine could be related to the PSU.. but I assume since I am using an EVGA PSU and an EVGA GPU, maybe this would not cause the whine? THought?
 

People cried a river over 970 having coil whines too. I've just upgraded from 970FTW+ to 1070FTW. Both have coil whine - when FPS goes to the sky only. In regular usage? Zero. None. I don't really know if I was lucky or the others were unlucky. None of 1070 owners that I personally know (8 friends of mine has one, few of them went SLI) experiences coil whine on their either, irrespectively of make and model.
Also, coil whine can be caused by many thing, as Coercion stated. It's sometimes hard to troubleshoot. For example my EVGA Supernova G2 850 had slight coil whine - for a day or two? It went away on it's own, literally. Wasn't annoying enough for me to concern, but it was audible when no sound was played through my speakers/headphones.
Afterall, coil whine is a very specific issue. It cannot be diagnosed until components are up and running. I'd say just take your shot, if you'll be unlucky enough to get one that whines, you can always return it, right? In my country (Poland) there is a law that allows me to return any product for being not compatible with the agreetment. And since coil whine is not an advertised feature (like it would be a feature at all, lol. But you get my point :P) we're free to return those. I'm pretty sure you should have a similar law that protect the customers in your country, wherever you come from.

One of my 2 770 SC ACX had coil whine, vouched to never buy a ACX cooled card again.

Had coil whine on the first card(fans started clicking too) which i rma'ed and on the 2nd.. it was rly loud on the first card and on the 2nd its there too but not as much as the first.

Got gtx 1070 ftw with heavy coil whine (PSU bequiet power zone 750w, but I checked also on old, blacklisted 600w tracer). If burning for ~6-12h will not work I will try to conctact evga rma or return card to seller.
 
[EDIT] burning for 10h lowered whining a tiny tiny bit but it is still far too loud to endure. Going to contact EVGA RMA, if it won't help, I'll return card to seller.

Nope me either....

My 1070 FTW has coil whine at higher fps or heavy load and ~100 fps. It's pretty annoying as I didn't expect my first higher end GPU to have any compromises.
 
This is my current build: on pcpartpicker /list/9sTdr7

two seperate cards and no coil whine. even on a day 1 version of the SC model. My new ftw has thermal pads and updated bios already and also has no issues.

I am also limited to 60fps though. Some people say they only have it at higher refresh rates. Either way, I have tested and don't hear anything, especially during long periods when the other fans are on full blast.

I have coil whine but its so quiet that i had to turn fans off and go right next to the card to hear it, and only game it happened in was civ 5 main menu. Also i have 3 - 4 years old psu (super flower golden green 500w)

Basically none at all on my GTX 1070 ACX 3.0 (i.e. reference card with ACX 3.0 cooler).

I have the normale GTX1070 and have had coile wine. Today i installed the new thermal pads and i can hear no more coile wine.
Why i don't no.

Anyone with a theory about that?
 
My EVGA 1070 SC has extreme coilwhine, even at low fps. 
Currently waiting on the thermal pads (been waiting since the first week) and hope that they will also fix the coil whine..

Mobo: Gigabyte z170 Wifi with i7-6700K.

Raising a dead thread, but I've now had 3 1070 SC's with whine louder than any card I've ever had. Really frustrating since my initial pre-thermal updates card had zero whine.

This has been my experience. Dirty power delivery, be it from the motherboard or the PSU, can result in coil whine being present or magnified if it was the card, to begin with. I see a lot of people complaining about coil whine, whom never bothered to test the card in another board or with another PSU and will continuously blame it on the card. Just because a component is having issues, does not mean that component is at fault.
 
That being said, my hearing is quite bad and even if I had bad coil whine, it's unlikely that I would hear it, dependent upon the frequency in which it resonates.
