Quantum computers are a buzz word going around (AKA light computers). They're not a direct replacement for traditional binary-based systems.

So in a way you could kinda compare it to GPU and CPU computations. One is better at certain tasks than others. I guess in this case a quantum computer would be ideal for something like folding@home? Provided F@H was setup for that type of processing.

I can see a sort of quantum co-processor being put in place for those types of calculations... I am going to be curious to see what scientists / engineers do with it.

Here is a dumb question, doesn't everything have 3 axis, so there are 6 states not 2 -- spin up and spin down for each axis? Or is quantum mechanics only figured in one dimension?

TBH - quantum mechanics has always boggled my mind, so I'm not 100% sure where the 2^n bits comes from.

    Your not thinking 4th dimensionally!

    I think it's 11 dimensions...

The issue with quantum computing is that it hasn't kicked off to what people expected it. Plus, it's grossly expensive. Back in the 80's or so, it had high hopes for becoming more of a reality by now than it is. It still has a ways to go before it becomes practical. And by practical, I don't mean desktop usage. I don't think that will be useful anytime soon (our current architectures are just fine for everyday usage).

As far as the comment about spins, it is purely quantum mechanical and it doesn't have any relation or correspondence with anything in classic physics, so don't confuse the term "spin" with your preconceived notation about what that means.

Well it looks like they have some real computers working !(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyhcFk8MnoE) The company is D Wave from Canada.
Here is a tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BImU-Brsv80) here is the explanation of how it works in real time(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZbW5bvcGig)

    Interesting stuff.
My programing classes are still fresh in my mind, so a lot of that actually made sense to me with the math side of things.
