i've not updated the Bios yet but i'll try later. (on 2.07)
I'm using 2x DVB-S2 PCIE Satellite Cards... or i was, in my AMD 8350 990fxa (or similar) motherboard - actually has been running for a few years none stop.
I got my hands on an X79 Dark and for some reason, it does not like these PCIE cards at all. The LED doesn't show they are plugged in any slot. What's strange is i can put a pcie x1 quadrro 290nvs in any slot while having an ati 290x in the first pci-e slot.. Any ideas? although i'm a second user to the board, i think my warranty could still be valid for a month or 2 (shipping date of these boards is?) so i really don't want to waste any time
Thanks in advance and i know it's getting on a bit with this board :)

Welcome to the Forum acolossYou GPU should be installed in Slot 1 that is next to the CPU. Reset your Bios to the Defaults by holding down the Small Red Button on the MB for 5 Seconds. Read the Manual about the PICe Slots. Hi and thanks a lot for the reply. The main reasons why i know they are not working are : The cards don't show up in the bios at the top right (or is that for GPU only?) The LEDs on the MB only show the 2 gpus (or 1 if i put one in) as being active. I'm using ESXI and the devices don't appear in Direct I/O Passthrough (but other devices do). by disabling lots of stuff in the bios i was able to get one of the dvb cards to show up in esxi When i get in from work I will update the bios, if there is no difference I will install windows and see if all the devices are visible there (only places i can install drivers). Thanks

Have you reset the Bios? You are not providing enough information for anyone to help you. Knowing you do not have an OS installed makes it harder as well. What version of ESXI are you using? What CPU are you using? Which Slots are the Cards installed into? Some PCIe Devices are not seen in the Bios as you have stated above and the OS needs to be installed and the Drivers for the Device.

thanks : Motherboard: X79 Dark Make: EVGA Model: ? is there any others? Bios Version: 2.07 Is Bios Current Yes or No. NO CPU: core i7 Model: 4930k Settings: stock 3.4ghz (also had a quick test 4.2ghz with 42x 100mhz) Memory: 32gb Make: Corsair Model: Dominator Platinum Settings: 1866mhz GPU/Video: AMD Make: Asus (also tried others) Model: 290x Driver Version: n/a AGE: 2 years GPU/Video: NVIDIA Make: Nvidia Model: 290 nvs Quadro Driver Version: N/A AGE: old PSU: 850 Watt Make: Corsair Model: RM850 AGE: New ish Other PCI/PCIe installed Devices: Make: TechnoTrend Budget s2 Model: not 100% by it's something like 1400s Slot Number Installed: 2 Driver Version: n/a Other PCI/PCIe installed Devices: Make: TBS Model: 6982 Dual Tuner Slot Number Installed: 4 Driver Version: n/a OS: ESXI Version: 6.0 Service Pack Level: n/a Windows/Patch Level: n/a Although i have a windows 10 Pro fully updated, VM with GPU Passthrough enabled for the 290x and all working fine. Also have a h100i corsair water cooler..
Basically i use esxi so I can run all this on 1 computer:
1x Windows Gaming System 1x TVHEADEND Satellite Server 1x pFsense Router/Firewall other linux distros with my other tower I also ran a FreeNAS VM with an lsi raid card passed-through to the VM... i'm hoping to just pass through the marvel controller to freenas instead with the dark.. and I had KodiBuntu with cheap 5450 gpu passedthrough with a hdmi through my wall to my TV.... but with the evga dark, i haven't got to the point of it seeing any satellite cards.. i'm wondering if something to do with the shared lane business (which i unfortunately I haven't researched). I did install windows before i installed esxi to make sure everything was working (with some benchmarks) but i hadn't installed any additional pcie cards then so i don't know if they would or would not show up..

updated the bios, same issue. (but it does show in windows) I'd say the board is fine but it seems esxi can't see the devices to be able to passthrough. not to worry and thanks for your help.

in case someone has the same issue - the problem is related to pcie-1.0a .. to fix would require a bios update more information can be found here >

If it is that, you're going to be waiting forever for EVGA to release an updated BIOS to fix it.
I say that because it took them over a year to fix sound card incompatibilities, and those are actually used for gaming (and not work, for which they are of the opinion (these days) that you should have purchased a server motherboard and not their server grade/enthusiast boards.

I sold my board now.. but i think it could be partly solved by forcing pcie gen 1 in the bios the problem seems to be related to "auto" configuration.. i did play around with this and get one card visible so might be doable that way.
