Ok, here's an update to my Quest to Fold Bigadvs within Virtualbox. Hardware: SR-2, (2) Intel X5680s @4.0GHz (24 threads), 24GB memory. Software: Windows 7-64bit, Virtualbox version 4.2.6 r82870, Linuxrouter's "Linux64_FAH" (latest version). Snagged a Bigadv this morning (8103 WU)Decided to see what it could first do without "the Kraken" or "BFS" running. So, these are the first TPFs running under just the stock Linuxrouter's image, NUMA enabled in the BIOS and no other PC activity. - 1% = 21:33 - 2% = 21:23 - 3% = 21:18 - 4% = 21:14 - 5% = 21:19 Paused the WU and installed Linuxrouter's Kernel update with BFS: - Note: Make sure you visit Linuxrouter's website for the latest file to get latest versions. http://www.linuxforge.net...ing/fah-virtualbox.php - Kernel 3.0.1 BFS 406 (this is the one that I installed today). - Command to type: upkernel http://www.linuxforge.net...-vb-301-bfs-406.tar.xz Restarted the WU successfully New TPFs running with "BFS" and "the Kraken" running and no other PC activity: - 7% = 21:05 - 8% = 21:05 - 9% = 21:01 - 10% = 21:02 - 11% = 21:05 - 12% = 21:01 Definitely an improvement (although not huge) across 5-6 frames of before and after "BFS" + "the Kraken". I lost some time due to installing "BFS" and wrapping "the Kraken" on the A5 core, but that is a one-time thing that won't affect future WUs. Based on what I'm seeing so far, this is acceptable performance that allows me to also have access to Windows.

My only guess is the affinity load change must be uneek to my strange/odd number of cores with the E5620+E5645 and 20 cores. I tried to get and install i7z so I could check the stats of the load on all cores with my 980x since it doesn't show as fully loaded running this setup either. The download of i7z was fine and the unpacking/tar also worked but I need libncurses5-dev package to make/make install i7z. this is where the problem came in sudo apt-get install doesn't work with this Linux OS. Edit: Wow just wow CongratZ on the upgrade from E5620 to X5680!!!

Wolf maybe you can compile on another machine with ncurses installed and take the binary on a pendrive. When have done that chmod +ax i7z and ./i7z . Tex how do you normally use windows? For which tasks? Maybe you can consider the Linux KVM option or even a dual boot Win/Linux.i asked for a screen capture of the virtual machine with the top command and the windows 7 task manager to see CPU Usage and figure some conclusion.

Wolf, thanks...figured I'd slip that one in! NerdGZ, my SR-2 is a basically my Workstation that I use for graphics work and some video production. I also game on it when I get time to do it. So, it is really a machine that I love to push as hard. But I also have some times when I can Fold (especially on weekends) and that was my interest in getting the Virtualbox running within Win7. Right now, with all my software running on Windows, I'm not really interested in migrating that stuff over to a native Linux environment where Windows is the virtual OS. I'm actually satisfied with what I'm getting right now with this VBox setup for my Folding needs. I appreciate the suggestions and advice, just want to hold where I am for now.

Thanks for the tip, that was my next step, I have TOTALCMD and should be able to transfer the files threw my network from one machine to the other. I'd already done this but I'm waiting on a package and don't won't to miss it. These rigs are out back in the shop, can't see or hear anything from out there. I'll take those screen shots you ask about later on of my 980x rig if Tex hasn't already posted them by then.

I was thinking (too) that if you had i7z running, you could see what CPU load Linux thinks is running. But, getting i7z installed onto this Terminal Only version of Linux is one area where I'm still struggling to understand how to do it. With this Terminal Only version of Linux, how do you get that compiled program downloaded across the net? I've installed the i7z software using a GUI interface version of Linux, but with this Terminal Only situation, I have no internet browser, etc. So do we have to copy the compiled program from another PC that has a browser, put it onto a USB stick and then somehow copy the file using a command from the Terminal?

Tex if you have wget command you can download with it and : wget -c http://i7z.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/i7z_64bit chmod a+x i7z_64bit ./i7z_64bit The pendrive solution : change to root directory (cd / ) make a mount point (mkdir /pendrive) mount the pendrive (mount -t msdos (if is fat32) or ntfs (if is ntfs) /dev/sdX1 (where X is the name of the /pendrive partition table) when mounted copy to /root or the usual /usr/sbin/ (cp /pendrive/i7z /usr/sbin/)

Just used your commands and it worked perfectly! Thank-you for the help. Looking at the i7z screen, my CPU Overclocked speed is reporting correctly, and all (24) Core/Threads are showing running at 100%. PS: Should have noted that I used your "wget" command suggestion.
