Hey guys,
Been a while since I have been on this forum and looking for some help.

Here's the scenario:
Computer freezes at idle, not immediately but eventually it does
Computer will freeze occasionally while playing COH2 or BF4
Sound will continue to after the freeze for a few moments
Have to do a hard reset after freeze
Video stays the same no artifacts or anything unusual
Happens whether I'm on the internet or not
Temperatures all look good

Here's some specs of my machine:
Motherboard: EVGA P67 FTW
Processor: i7 2600k (overclocked to 4.0)
GPU: 2x EVGA GTX670 FTW in SLI
Power: EVGA Supernova 850 G2
OS: Windows 10 x64

Here's what I've done and the issue still continues:
Removed overclock settings and changed to default
Updated GPU Drivers
Updated MB Firmware
Disabled SLI
Switched cards around to different slots
Ran single card setup in different slots
Recently replaced SSD with higher capacity SSD

I've been dealing with this issue for a month now and its finally really getting to me as I'm having to study for my financial licenses online and have to restart the entire computer every time it happens. Looking for some guidance here....

Only critical errors are Kernel Power from hard shutdowns after freezing.

I was using Skype just about 1.5hr ago and once again it froze. I was talking with my folks and they could still hear and see me while I was frozen but eventually I had to reboot again.

It looks like you are getting 6008 before every shutdown. Has this happened on all your nvidia driver versions?

Also, you said you have tested with only 1 card installed. Did you test each card individually?

Yes, tested card individually and in different slots. No change. Thinking I'll try to roll back the drivers a few months. Currently using 376.33

Rolled back drivers to 375.70 after doing a clean sweep with Display Driver Uninstaller and I'm still getting freezes. Wondering if this could be a PS issue even though its only 6 months old.

Re: Help Wanted: Cannot Isolate Computer Freezing 2017/02/25 21:21:41 (permalink)
It could definitely be a PSU issue. Is your PSU and EVGA unit?

It would be wise to check on your 12v rail to make sure your power supply is healthy. Many motherboard manufacturers put a voltage monitor into their BIOS options, usually under the hardware monitor section.

The 12v rail should read between 11.4v and 12.6v (+/- 5% of the rail's rating). It should be stable, with little to no fluctuations.

A slight fluctuation of up to .05v is generally fine as long as it happens no more than once every 15-20 seconds.

A fluctuation higher than .1v, or more often than every 10 seconds could be an indication of an issue with the 12v rail, and you should consider having your power supply tested or replaced.

These readings are taken at an idle state, and may not indicate a more severe issue that occurs when the system is under load.

    Please let us know.

PS is indeed an EVGA unit. Bought it just 5-6 months ago.

Here is a video showing the voltage changes, the high being 12.125 to the lowest 11.978 on occasion.

So I was poking around looking at my memory settings and this is what I found:

    Memory Specs
    http://www.corsair.com/en-us/vengeance-8gb-dual-channel-ddr3-memory-kit-cmz8gx3m2a1600c8r

    Settings in BIOS:

I've never played around with memory settings. Can someone tell me if I need to match the speed and timing and whether or not this could be an issue that could cause freezing.

    Thanks

What RAM do you have? (Part number)
If you have X.M.P. RAM you can just set the profile.

    Main PC | Secondary PC
    Intel i9 10900K | Intel i7 9700K

MSI MEG Z490 ACE | Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Master
ASUS TUF RTX 3090 | NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super

I posted a link of the RAM I'm using in my last post. They are the Corsair Vengence 4gb sticks. SPD at 1333 tested at 1600. It appears all my default settings are set for SPD and I haven't used any of the XMP profiles at all.

Lol missed that, the screen shots had all my attention.

You should set your X.M.P. profile, that RAM will perform better.

Yeah I'll try that. Something is telling me this isn't the source of my freezing though. I guess I could run memtest and see what happens.

So I ran memtest86 and everything checked out fine. Not sure if I want to tackle doing a fresh install of the OS as I have Adobe CS2 (yes i know its old) and its a pain to get it setup to even be able to run since its so outdated not to mention the hassle of having to reinstall everything.

Any suggestions on what other tests I can run?

Was the Win10 OS a clean install or did you upgrade on top of your previous OS ?

It was an install on top of my previous OS. I think I installed Windows 10 mid/late last year when it was just pushed onto my computer.

Here's a little more info about my drive situation:
    C: - Crucial 128GB SSD (OS installed)
    E: - Standard 500GB Storage Drive
    F: - Samsung 256GB SSD (COH2 and BF4 installed here)

I would recommend a Clean install of OS - sometime strange stuff happens only on upgraded PC

Check Device Manager for Errors - and make sure you only loaded 1 set of sound drivers.  If your MB has sound and Nvidia driver added its sound driver - this could cause conflicts and locks.  I only load the Nvidia GPU driver and the PhysX.

Set your RAM voltage manually in the BIOS, usually gives better stability

Yeah I'm reading how to do a clean install of Windows 10 right now. I know if I go this route I'll likely lose my CS2 Suite but given I don't use it much anymore, the breakup just might have to happen. I have the disks for Windows 8 but it seems I need to create an image disk for Windows 10 if I'm reading this correctly?

Yes, I like to use a USB stick.  It loads faster than a CD.  If your Win 10 install is activated the reinstall should go sooth enough

Do you happen to have a tutorial you have used for the clean install of win10?

Also, I was just looking at my C drive and its a 128GB and I only have about 7GB left of space. Thinking maybe I should just switch my drives and make the Samsung 256GB my new C and buy another Samsung 256GB to act as my game drive. I just cant believe how much space these two games use!

You can and should (if Boot drive is small)  move all "library files" to a different drive - music, movies, pictures, "my documents", downloads .... will save some room on your Boot drive

How to Geek clean Win 10 install

    Cnet Win10 install

    Microsoft install Win 10 Tool
Use this tool to install a clean copy of the most recent version of Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro, and remove apps that you installed or came pre-installed on your PC. You’ll have the option to keep your personal files.

    hey dudes! :)

Just want to suggest running Live Linux from a bootable USB if you really don't want to reinstall windows, and see if the problem still happens there. Also, what's the longest you've left it "frozen" to see if windows could recover from whatever is going on?

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

    Thanks for the links CooGTX

As for the length of time leaving the computer to try to recover......I think its been about an hour as I'll not be on the computer and eventually I notice it hasn't gone to sleep. At that point I'll check the computer and its in a frozen state. Usually mouse still works but all programs are non responsive including trying to shutdown from start menu.

Before I go deep into reinstalling the OS, I'm currently disconnecting devices one-by-one to see if I experience any freezing. I do have a very old USB Microsoft Joystick I'm questioning but who knows at this point. Trying to cover all scenarios here.

Does the freezing occur when in safe mode? Does the freezing occur while inside the bios?

For some reason this just screams ram to me.  Blow out you slots with compressed air and reset your ram, check to see if your heatsink is too tight or has shifted and not applying direct pressure to the heatsink.  Check your socket for dust and the back of the cpu.  Last time I experienced this it was a bad memory stick and a blue screen wouldn't pop in windows 7.

My kids pc would freeze after a few hours in windows 10 due to a loose heatsink.

Live Linux just means to run it from USB (or disc) without installing it AFAIK :P

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

I ran Memtest for 1.5hr and had no errors so not sure that RAM is the issue here.

Funny thing is that last night I unplugged my USB joystick and since then I haven't had a freeze. I'll be doing further testing tonight so see if this is really the issue. Keeping fingers crossed.
