Hi,

I just upgraded my GPU from a Gigabyte Radeon HD 5770 1GB to an . I uninstalled all the old ATI drivers and then ran  (the free version) just to ensure there was nothing left. I installed the new GPU and installed the drivers from EVGAs site.

First of all the card is amazing. I was able to play both Battlefield 4 and Battlefield 1 Open Beta on Ultra settings.

A few days ago I noticed that when I click the mouse wheel and drag to scroll down while I'm in an internet browser I see some pixelated screen tearing in the bottom 1/4 of my browser (On FireFox and Chrome). Also, some walls of buildings flicker slightly in the Battlefield 1 Beta at point C in the conquest map. This may be a beta related issue and not related to my GPU though.

I tried disabling Hardware acceleration, smooth scrolling and turning v-sync to adaptive, but none of that has worked so far. I also removed the card and cleaned the PCI slot with compressed air and tried another mouse and DVI cable.

I've heard that flickering in games and tearing could be hardware related... or is this some settings / driver issue? I'd rather not RMA if possible.

I called EVGA support and followed their instructions to use DDU to remove all drivers and I re-installed the new drivers from the nVidia site. Still same problem.

Any help is much appreciated!

I'd suggest going into the nvidia control panel and setting v-sync to on then rebooting your computer and retesting for the issue. I'd also suggest testing all available gpu drivers to see if it's driver related. Make sure to use ddu between each driver installation.

Hi Sajin,

Thank you so much for the response!

I tried setting the v-synch to adaptive and that didn't help so I will try turning it on completely. I did try installing the .39 driver but it was unable to identify my GPU. I'll also try a slightly newer driver to see if that helps.

I hope this works :)

Thank you & I'll report back soon.

I tried turning on V-sync, rebooting and retesting... no luck.

I tried uninstalling the drivers. After which, before I install the nvidia ones, the problem is gone. No screen tearing when I scroll. Then I installed the earliest version possible which would detect my hardware, 368.81, and the problem is back. It's so strange. Any more ideas? is it a hardware issue possibly?

Thank you.

Is it worth trying a fresh install of windows? Or is that just a waste of time and effort?

Wouldn't hurt if you don't mind doing it.

If you upgrade to Win 10 from a previous version---> YES, reinstall Win 10 ---> Do a Clean install, helps with many issues

Thanks for the replies.

I did upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10. How do I do a straight clean install to windows 10?

Also I just noticed that I think I do not have the latest BIOS version for the card. According to gpu Z & Speccy I have bios 86.06.0E.00.60? The latest is : 86.06.0E.00.62 or 63  I believe? would that matter? which should I try first? BIOS or Re-install windows?

Thanks :)

Latest BIOS for your MB = good to do

Changing BIOS on your GPU = NO  There are times, but if you put in the wrong one, brick

Use the Windows tool to make a USB installer.

As long as you have activated your copy it is lock to your PC.

Obviously make a backup of all things dear to you as the Clean install will wipe the drive

Also disconnect all other HD first as Windows installer will span files onto every HD it finds, remove any of those drives later, Win fails to boot

If you are going to just use a new drive:
- remove your account login password and unlock encrypted files, before removing the "old" HD or you need to make a recovery - credentials & password reset disk

Step 5 is where you will select either USB or an ISO file that you can burn to disk.  You will be downloading an install package and you just plug in your current W10 key.  Since you have W10 now, you will get the install file for the same W10 version.

Thanks.

I'm trying to create the installation drive now. It failed twice for some reason so I redownloaded it and formatted my 8GB flash drive.

One more question since I have a digital licence for Windows and that is based on hardware and I have changed GPUs do you thing that will cause issues with activation ?

Shouldn't.  Each component gets a 'point value'.  Changing one thing or two generally won't kick that out of range.  Even if it does, call them and they will set it to work while you are on the phone.

I personally like the ISO image to disk, but most people like the USB.

Thank you so much for your help guys.

It looks like the screen tearing is gone now that I did the clean install over the weekend.

I still have to test it in a game, as I'm still downloading Battlefield 4... But I did do a 3DMark test and got a slightly than before the clean install: www [dot] 3dmark [dot] com/spy/426725 (can't post links yet :P )

I hope it works without any issues when I get around to testing BF4.

Many thanks! :)

Re: Help! New EVGA GTX 1060 SC and screen tearing in all browsers 2016/09/12 11:16:44 (permalink)
OK so I tried BF4 and I was able to play on ultra settings with over 60 FPS. The only thing I noticed while playing were what looked to be "refresh lines", occasionally, but in the same place where the screen tearing in the browser was occurring i.e. the bottom 1/3 - 1/4 of the screen only. I changed v-sync from "use the 3D application setting" to "adaptive" this made the "refresh lines" slightly less of an occurrence and my avg FPS looked as if it went up.

Additionally, Today I purchased a Display port cable which I used when this happened. Interestingly I turned my comp off and when out for some errands. When I came back and tried to boot up it wouldn't. Luckily I remembered that I added a DP cable. Sure enough when I pulled it out of the GPU the computer powered on. I tried the 2nd DP cable socket on my 1060 and the same result, after powering off it would not power back on. Due to this  I have since reverted to my DVI and I don't have the power on issues. However I am still experiencing the same issue with the "refresh lines" in the game I see occasionally when jumping, panning to look side to side & running on tile textured roof tops.

Any more thoughts?

Thank you

It won't power on at all?  Or you don't see anything on the screen?

Did you disconnect the DVI cable when trying the DP cable?  It could also be a bad cable and the computer thinks there is no monitor attached.

No, it wouldn't power on at all. I had completely removed the DVI and only had the DP cable attached. After removing the DP cable I was able to power on the computer again. I plugged the DP back in and the screen went on. However, when I shut it down and tried to boot up from a cold start again I got the same issue over again on all of the DP ports on the GPU. :P

Check for a newer mb bios update. Seems to conflict with the graphics cards with getting your monitor to turn on.

I've had that happen a few times and it's annoying! Sometimes just pulling out the dp cable from the back of the card and reinstalling it worked.. sometimes had to do it a few times.. sometimes turning rhe mon it or off and back on will work.

It still may happen every once in a while.. last time was cause I used ddu to Uninstaller the drivers so on the next boot it sister want to turn the screen on.

I think it's some kind of hand shake between the mb and the graphics card.

I'm gonna test another DVI or HDMI monitor later today (I don't have access to an extra one with display port). If all else fails RMA I guess? Thanks for the advice so far all!

I brought home a second monitor with an HDMI connection and hooked it up, loaded up battlefield 4 and the "refresh lines" were occurring occasionally in the same place.
So I took it back to the store I got it at and they said they are going to check it at their lab. Hopefully, I'll get a replacement soon :) I will keep you posted.
