Have no fear, guys - I will report after the CPU swap, as well as any other "adventures". However, it will probably be a few days after Aug. 24th (payday!). You guys have been my lifeline through a very frustrating and expensive experience. I don't know what I would have done without your advice and help. I really appreciate your help! Thank you!!!

Just swapped in the other Q6600 CPU I'm running with the same BIOS settings used with the old Q6600. So far (it's been like 15 minutes...) it seems to be running OK One thing to note is increased CPU Core Temps. - Bouncing all over the place from 86C - 100C, but sticking mostly in the low to mid 90's. I was forced into doing the CPU swap today as things were going from bad to worse with a high potential for total failure. I couldn't even get a single web page open before it would BlueScreen. After a dozen attempts I just shut it down and went shopping for Thermal compound. The worst part is that every time it crashes it scrambles all my desktop icons and it takes me 10 minutes or more to put them back where I want them. Then it crashes again and I get to repeat! One thing I'm a little concerned about is the white plastic locking tabs that hold the CPU Cooler to the Motherboard. Several of them were pretty brittle and broke. Luckily, I had two units and was able to rob from the other one, but I'm not 100% convinced that it is locked down tight. I'll keep an eye on it and hope that it doesn't fall off due to vibration. Any idea if you can buy replacement parts for them? I'd like to replace all 4 locking tabs with fresh ones. I'm also informed that it takes 36 hours for the Thermal Compound to set and that Temps will drop during that time. - Just checked - Reading 81C - 91C across all 4 cores. I will wait for 36 hours of running time before I torture the new CPU to see if it will crash or not - unless it crashes all on its own... Here's the Thermal Compound I'm using: http://www.ncix.com/detail/arctic-silver-alumina-premium-ceramic-87-18557.htm After letting this sit for a couple of minutes while doing something in the kitchen, the CPU Core Temps are now 73C - 80C More in a bit...

Good to hear the blue screens have been fixed after swapping out cpu's. The cooler most likely isn't fully seated that is why you're seeing very high temps. I wouldn't stress test the processor until you get a new cooler. You can get another stock cooler from ebay for $15 bucks... http://www.ebay.com/itm/G...c2b:g:iyYAAOSwvg9XgGdx

Oh, I just had a chat with Intel Customer Service. They do not sell just the plastic lockdown clips (or whatever you call them) You have to replace the entire cooler to get them. Seems pretty silly to have to buy a $50 cooler to get a ten cent clip!

Sushihunter I guess my next step is to research what to replace this system with. While I was at NCIX today, this is what the salesman suggested I look at: 110592 - Intel Core i5 6500 CPU LGA1151 - $264.99 126208 - MSI Z170A Motherboard - $174.99 111429 - G-Skill Ripjaws V Series F4-2400C15D-16GVR DDR4 - 16 GBs - $89.99 Any thoughts?
Good suggestions. What are you going to use the system for?

Not good. Only things left to try would be to reset the bios to default settings. Starting to look like the motherboard is the issue after all.

Thermal throttling from hitting 100c on the cpu could be causing the 124 bsod at this point too.

I wondered about that, but I don't think so. It's getting cooler here now, and the Core Temps are running around 83C to 87C at the moment. As of now, Max Temps are 91, 95, 98, 98C on the 4 cores. Haven't done anything intensive at all, just a few tabs open in IE11 and running Vuze in the background... I am however wondering about the Motherboard - after all, that's what feeds the CPU. Another option is to swap in the other Core2 Duo CPU that I have - though I'd hate to lose 2 cores... But I think I'll play in the BIOS after a good nights sleep and see how that goes. On the plus side, I've only had 2 crashes since swapping CPU's - Before that, I would have had trouble just typing in a sentence here without crashing. Oh, I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but I got my PSU Tester in the mail from China today. Not bad for $3.97 ! Postage included! http://www.aliexpress.com/item/20-pcs-lot-New-ATX-SATA-HDD-Power-Supply-Tester-Tool-With-LED-Display-20-24pin/764545239.html?spm=2114.13010608.0.64.1lMbIW

Cool GTX

Sajin Good suggestions. What are you going to use the system for?
My main use is web surfing, but I also do a lot of photography and video work. Nothing fancy, mainly hobby. Lots of fishing videos I have been using Adobe Premiere Elements, but my copy is hiding in a box somewhere since the last move. Also use Photoshop a lot.

Well, I did a BIOS reset to default settings. Still getting crashes. I bumped the Vcore voltage back up to where we had it a while ago and then ran the Intel Diagnostic Program - it failed because of high temps. So I set it back to Auto and it is running much cooler now - still getting all the same crashes as before The question is, is this because of some change in the CPU itself, or is the problem to do with the lock-down clips not holding as tight as they should? At this point I'm tempted to swap in the Duo cpu and install the after market Zipang Cooler. Pension day is next week, so I'm thinking of grabbing an LGA 775 Motherboard off of Craigslist and just going from there. I have 3 sets of DDR2 RAM that will work in this Motherboard, so at least one of them should be good. I don't have the money to buy new at the moment, and will have to save up for the whole MB, CPU & RAM combo. Right now, I just need a stable running computer, even if it is not as fast as a new one.

The reason for high temps = clips not holding tight like they should/too little thermal paste on cpu. Since you're crashing with two different cpu's it's most likely the motherboard at this point. Your old psu that you replaced with a supernova 750w g2 most likely caused your gpu/mb damage due to out of spec ripple. What is psu ripple?

Most likely clips not holding tight - plenty of thermal compound on the cpu/cooler. I checked after first attempt to lockdown the clips. Not sure about the PSU ripple - Only 2 PSU's in this unit - first was an Antec 850 Watt unit, second was an Antec 650 Watt unit. Both high quality (unless something went sideways inside). Also, it has always been plugged into a high quality surge suppressor. I'll have to see if I can find some place that can test the Antec 650 to see what sort of shape it's in... At some point, I might even take the Antec 850 in to a repair shop to see what it will cost to get it working again. Found two shops that can do this, and one even replaces all the capacitors with new high quality Japanese caps. But now that I have the EVGA unit, that will have to wait until I get the MB/CPU issue resolved... Thanks again, Sajin!

UPDATE Last night I pulled the RAM out of the computer and put back just the G.Skill RAM, (both sticks). Ran MemTest86 for a little over 2 hours and got 2 full passes, and almost a third - no errors encountered. So, it pretty much looks to me like the issue is in the Motherboard... Speaking of Motherboards, I've been checking some out online. Looking at the Gigabyte G1 Sniper B7 which is selling for $125.98 Can$ - http://www.ncix.com/detail/gigabyte-g1-sniper-b7-lga-a9-126150.htmI could then pair it with either a G4400 or G4500 LGA1151 CPU - http://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-pentium-processor-g4500-3m-c6-116973.htmhttp://www.ncix.com/detail/intel-pentium-processor-g4400-3m-b8-116972.htm Not the high end system I'd like to have, but one that would get me a stable system while I pick up the pieces for the system I want without pushing me to over-spend in a short period of time. The bonus is that I can re-purpose it for a home theater PC later on. Used MB's on Craigslist have been pretty scarce or pretty expensive when found. The ones I've seen have been stripped down budget models. If I'm going to go that route, then maybe buying new will be the way to go. The real trick is to have the cash available when a good deal pops up.
