Hi everyone,
To give a quick overview of where I stand. I purchased a Q6850(edit - so sorry, this is a Q9650...) from a good friend, but come to find out my evga 680i will not run all four cores. I since purchased an Asus Striker II formula from ebay only to find it not working (trying to decide on getting the fried component repaired or scraping the board). After the let down of the Asus board I then got a Evga 790i from ebay (this was advertised as an XFX... 0.o! When I got the board in is when I saw it was an EVGA.) I have not powered up the board yet as I have this ram coming in (today):
http://www.newegg.com/Pro...x?Item=N82E16820231416

G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR

I have been reading a couple of threads on here about the trouble people are running into with RAM on these boards I also read the sticky post by Gryphon. I have read a couple of posts where JeffreyHam and VistaHead has been helping folks with their 790i woes. (I will keep reading in hopes of finding answers before really bothering you folks :) )

The first test will be to see if the board powers up and POSTs. I will try to go through bios and get settings to default to see if it will allow me to run install Windows 7 64bit. If anyone has any thoughts of what I should do prior to installing windows please feel free to inform me (I have much appreciation for those who have pioneered getting this board stable) Had I have known the work involved in getting this board stable I would have paid Dell to sell me one through Best Buy (I AM JOKING I WILL NEVER BUY A COMPUTER OF THIS SORT).

A little about me, I am 37 (38 in Aug) I have a degree (albeit old) in computer science. I have since grown bored of building electronics as a 8-10hr/day job and have moved on to getting a degree in Nursing (medical is far more exciting, and stable +blood, guts, and, adrenalin are intriguing). I have built several PCs but have never delved into OCing so I am truly novice on this front. I am worried that I will be stuck with this 680i board running 2 cores of a quad core chip until I am out of college if I cannot get this 790i to work.

So the PC build:
Motherboard - EVGA 790i (ebay purchase = lets see if it POSTs first)
CPU - Intel Q9650
RAM - G.SKILL Sniper 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSR
[Cas Latency:9
Voltage:1.5V ***SIGH***
Multi-channel Kit:Dual Channel Kit
Timing:9-9-9-24
ECC:No
Buffered/Registered:Unbuffered
Heat Spreader:Yes
Features:Designed for Intel LGA 1156 Core i5 / i7 CPUs and AMD AM3 CPUs   !OMG what do I do!!
PSU - PC Power & Cooling Silencer 750W (this has been running my 680i with SLI)OS - Windows 7 64bitCPU cooler - Thremalright venomous CPU coolerCase - Antec 900
I do look forward to any and all replies, I thank you all for any information in advance and will if in need of any help THANK YOU! :)I will probably be corresponding to this site trough my dare I say ...ipad...(please feel free to throw stones as I drive by :P) to keep up with this post.

Welcome to the forum!!  Since you purchased a used board, and you have no idea what the previous owner's BIOS settings were, I would clear the CMOS first thing to change the settings to default.  If you go through the support link at the top of the forum page, you can download the electronic User's Manual for the 790i Ultra, which will show you how to clear the CMOS.  A few suggestions....install the RAM in the black slots, and manually enter the manufacturer's recommended timings and voltage in the BIOS.  You can leave everything else on "auto" the first time that you fire up the board.

Thanks for the info, i had given thought to having to do the clear and now that you mention it I will absolutly do it.

I will post back a copy of the bios settings when and if it POSTs.

The first time you go into the BIOS (if it posts) I would go ahead and set these like this:

    CPU Spread Spectrum: [Disabled]
    HT Spread Spectrum: [Disabled]
    PCle Spread Spectrurn(SPP): [Disabled]
    PCle Spread Spectrurn(MCP): [Disabled]
    SATA Spread Spectrum: [Disabled]

Noted JeffreyHam. I was expecting the RAM in yesterday but it is lagging behind.
    Thanks!

Anyone know what the Ebay electronic parts warranty (if there is one) states?
When I got the Asus and found it was no good the seller mentioned he would have refunded me the entire amount including shipping had I have tested it sooner but "the warranty has run out by a day or two." But he still gave back a majority of the money.

I'm asking because I just checked on the RAM and its sitting at UPS the next county over. Seems to be on the slow ride over for some reason. I could have drove to GA. and picked it up faster

You should be fine. They say the ram is designed for "XXXX" just to be a marketing strategy. If anything, the evga community provides so much support that you would be kicking yourself for not getting the board.

Ok, entered the suggested specs. Not sure about commands per clock so i left it at auto 2T. I did not monkey with the "advanced memory settings" section.

The default settings on the memory were:
    tCL 11
    tRCD 11
    tRP 11
    tRAS 28
    CMD auto 2T

I did no ocing, only what was suggested. Thnaks for the start guys. I would like to attempt a mild oc if someone could walk me through later when we know this is stable. Gonna try to install win7 now if this is correct.

    Thanks so much!

So would you say it is still crucial that I run memtests? being that I ran the prime95s? I am not against it I just don't want to run it and hear that prime95 took care of what memtests would have.

I think you should memtest it anyways. I know I have used OCCT to test my cpu and it passed but the memory settings were unstabile. However, I do not have as much experience as the guys posting before me :D

Have I lost the interest from others? Did I jump ahead too fast with loading Windows and such?

I will get memtest and run it. Is there a standard way people on here get their bios information or is it good ol' load the bios and break out a pen and paper?

I saw on of your posts stanwich where you had trouble ocing a 9550. I will use that bios diagram to copy my bios settings (unless there is a way in bios to secure it digitally just to b e sure i get all the info needed. (I'm not going to use your settings, I just need to know what info to get copied.)

They're probably just busy. Yes you will have to bust out the pen and paper, unless you boot up BIOS and log onto forums from a laptop or your iPad. And by all means go ahead and copy/paste the BIOS template -- that's how it was meant to be used as. Obviously with your settings of course

You want to run your rig at a mild OC, but is it running stabile at the current, and presumably default, settings?

yes its stable at default. My only thing that puts a ! inplace is the MCP is 51*c according to everest. I put a fan on it (not the one EVGA supplied as I didn't get it, but a vantec stealth60x60x25mm that fits just right on the heat sink. still getting 51*c. I suspect the grpx card is blocking any real air flow to the fan. Can I put the grpx card in slot 2 or 3 of the PCIEx16s? I know it won't make 'much difference but worth try.

I guess mild to me is ~3.5

MCP at 51*C is actually very good for the 790i. Mine is running at 69*C with stock settings. They tend to run hotter and if I have learned anything from the community, it is your MCP temps are worry-free up to 90*C. Even though you think the fan has no airflow, just having it on will make a big difference. And no, you can not move the gpu to a diff x16 slot. I have tried and at boot it says you must have it on the first one.

As for a mild OC, I would think you should aim for 1600 fsb (not sure what that equates to on a Q9650) in hopes that you can link and sync your ram with it. The cpu fsb should OC fine; your next concern presumably is the ram. Also, work on getting your template out otherwise no one can really assist you. Your sig shows "9-9-9-24, Voltage - 1.5v" for your ram, but what are you currently running them at? I doubt you can be stabile with stock cpu (1333) and a 1600 ram...

Edit: After some searching, I found Q9650 has a 9X multiplier; so at 1600 fsb that should bring you to ~3.6

Pulled this from everest, I in no way intend this to be my template. I was just seeing how i could get a report out of everest, I got my values from bios and will enter them soon. I need to get some study in for final exam.

The RAM timings were manually entered to the factory specs like VistaHead had suggested.

I can already tell you to disable C1E Enhanced Halt State if you plan to OC.

I suggest that you do not run your RAM faster then your FSB as it does nothing for speed purposes, and can potentially cause data corruption.

So should i bump the fsb to 1600 which will put me at 3.6GHz? What about voltages, link sync.
    Thanks Vista and stan.

Bump fsb up to 1600; leave at auto volts for now. You might have to manually up SPP 1 notch but just stick with auto for now and see how well it holds up.

X4. I dunno if we just use this as a "burn in" process or would this be valid enough to determine a "stable" system?
Thanks so much for the OC specs VistaHead.

You are welcome.  I would see if I could lower my CPU voltage by lowering it by increments of one and stress testing with each change.  Once I reached a setting that failed the stress test, I would raise it one increment to the last stable setting.

Hey, still testing little at a time. I got it pretty low and is running stableso far. Got out of town guests so testing has been halted until Sunday. Looks like as i was hoping with voltage drop comes a slight temp drop too.

Thanks again to everyone for the help!
