So I just installed a brand new gtx 980 I bought from amazon a week ago and I'm having video driver crashes.

My problem is simply this, I'll be playing warframe or arma 3 and I'll play for about an hour or so and then all of a sudden the screen goes black and crashes to my desktop with the infamous windows has recovered from a video driver crash. Something that might be helpful is when my video drivers crash the evga geforce gtx 980 lights go out on the gpu then return when the drivers come back online.

Before I had no issues on this system the only thing I swapped out was my gpu and then all these issues started appearing.
OS: Windows 7 (64-Bit)
Motherboard: Asus Z87-PLUS
CPU: i7-4770k @ 3.5GHz
GPU: GTX 670 Signature 2
Ram: Patriot Signature DDR3 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) CL11 PC3-12800 (1600MHz)
SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 512GB
HDD: WD Caviar Black 1 TB SATA III 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache
PSU: Corsair Enthusiast Series 650-Watt

A bit more info, I'm using a
Dell UltraSharp U2414H 23.8-Inch Monitor connected via display port 2.0
and an older Dell 12-Inch via DVI.

Things I've tried so far
  • Newest video driver from Nvidia.com (347.88)
  • Older video drivers (Note, I do use DDU in safe mode to completely uninstall drivers)
  • Installing just the video drivers, no physx or 3D or even hd audio.
  • Tried with or without geforce experience.
  • With or without shadowplay on
  • Tried power management mode to "Prefer Maximum Performance"
  • Going into my bios and making sure GEN3 was selected just to make sure.
  • Updating System bios.
  • Messing around with settings in each of the games to no avail.

The odd thing to me is that running Unigine_Heaven-4.0 for about an hour yields no video driver crashes.

Also today while playing warframe, I blue screened using 345.20 drivers. (032115-7113-01.dmp (tinyurl dot com/mbr89pg) also GPU-Z Sensor Log 1 (tinyurl dot com/k7fcdlu), both associated with this blue screen event.)

I'm all out of idea's on what this problem could be. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Edit: Added a bit more info.

Try decreasing the core clock with MSi afterburner or EVGA precision and see what happens then.

How much should I decrease it by?

Try first to drop for 50MHz on same level with Superclocked model, if crash continue drop for 100MHz or set base clock 1126MHz.
But you know what... if you drop clock for 50MHz and no crash don't make any conclusion, leave 2-3 days on 50MHz less or 100MHz less to be sure that's problem.

I am having the same issue with this card, I get constant crashes, and sometimes it does not recover.
Happens when I play my games, warframe for one and elder scrolls online as well. I have read around and seen that it could be my motherboard, but would like some ideas first, I have the latest drivers, and have tried rolling back with no result.

I have used the precision X and watched it while I Play eso, The core clock stays at about 1400 mhz and the temp varies between 65-72.

On your place I would repeat as other people, drop GPU clock on 1126MHz and save profile and minimized Afterburner.
Then I would try 1-2 days to play on such settings. If crash stop that mean chip is culprit. Alien on wrong place.
He stray in more expensive cards.
But don't do that after crash. First nice uninstall drivers, clean in safe mod with Display Driver Uninstaller and install only driver and physX, nothing else. When you install driver and boot in Windows immediately save profil on 1126MHz Base and 1216MHz boost, set AB in properties to start with Windows and enable startup button and that play games and use PC as you wish. If crash stop... that's it, you hit jackpot.

At what utilization is that temp? That temp is too high for that speed! have you OC'd? Are you using Precision 16 to apply a fan curve?
Perhaps you could get GPU-Z and post

I've been messing around with this problem for about a week and the setup I've been using is simply just under clocking the card.

Make sure your using the latest drivers, which as of me posting should be (347.88).
Then with EVGA Precision X set the "GPU Clock Offset -50 MHz" hit apply and try your games. *knock on wood* I've been crash free ever since I've applied this change.

Random thing to try if your still getting issues is to register your card with EVGA open a support ticket and ask for updated BIOS drivers.

P.s. You wouldn't of happened to just get a card shipped from back order off amazon did you? Maybe these cards were rushed out and kinda unstable, I've got no idea. >_<
