Why would you need a flashlight app? Turning on the camera flash as an LED light is built into iOS. Must be talking about Android peasants.

All I gotta say is that you don't need an app for that.

My old HTC Thunderbolt had a flashlight built in, but my HTC One doesn't. Thanks for the heads up. I have hardly any apps on my phone because most of them when I go to download I see all the things they want access to and there is absolutely no reason for it, so I never install anything. I did however download a game the other day, "World of Goo" (2D Boy games) which I also have on CD for desktop.. I was very pleased to see probably for the first time ever when I went to download it that "this app needs no permissions" ..nothing. That is how they should be. I paid like a few dollars for it - well worth it, it's a cool game.

    .....Meh.

I don't do "Private" things when I use the flashlight... Maybe whoever is spying on me, Can help me look for what I was looking for in the dark in the first place.

I use "tiny flashlight" on my phone all day long. If they were spying on me, they would just see the back of computer cases, in my teeth after I get something stuck in there or a keyhole. Pretty scary though because I just press "accept" on almost every app I get without reading.

People should pay more attention to the app permissions before downloading an app. There are flashlight apps available that only access the Camera. Would you download the next big game if it had access to EVERYTHING on your PC?

Yeah, this applies to phone applications in general.

Funny thought... Someone wanting to be malicious would just put it out there for free without hidden spyware... Once they get a certain amount of downloads, they put the spyware into an update and still get what they want.

I had the app on my phone even before they added to to iOS.   Just removed it.  I haven't used it since it got added to iOS.  interesting.

Those issues are negated because everything is not equal. They're both self contained software ecosystems. It would be like complaining to someone why they don't have linux installed on their gaming machine. People use what they have their software library for.

+1.... im the same way. I very rarely put any apps on my phone, especially in the last 2 years because the app permissions are just getting crazy intrusive. My first HTC Incredible had a OS built in flashlight button too.....and I had that 4 or 5 years ago probably.

Brad o please ,that is a weak endorsement for why Apple is worth anything outside of its name .OS or not...its over priced prestige with companies catering to it.When in almost any case a PC or android (both open not locked ) can do it as fast or better for much less.Apple cant live on its name much longer as people are waking up too other options not as expensive but just as capable.

Before you download an app it tells you what it needs access too. The app is "free" because its collecting your data and that app maker is then selling it...
you need to look for a flashlight app that doesn't access anything or run any adds.

Also Fox's target audience is around 68 years old on average. 68 year old people are not buying iPhones or androids. Its just another media scare tactic.

Right.. just like the top rated antivirus program for android.. 1m+ downloads. All it did was have a gif that said 'scanning'..then..'safe' or something like that, the rest of the app was dedicated to harvesting as much info as possible from your phone.

Sorry, it's not a media scare tactic.

Might want to learn about news and target and median audience numbers
    MSNBC’s median age for its prime-time shows this year is 60.6, CNN’s is 59.8/Fox 50.2/ABC 54.4/NBC 47.7
The target audience is 25-54 for fox actually

some of the bullet points on those findings are somewhat for shock value, but I'd agree flashlight apps have permissions to do much more than they should. I just find it funny the app the company provides states it needs to access the microphone on your smartphone...for what!?

in any case their camera app is only 73kb versus larger installs so I just threw their app on my phone. I was using Tiny Flash light + LED but whatever.
