HAF X still the King of cases, or are there better options for around the same price?

Was wondering if the HAF X would be a good choice for a larger case with higher airflow, or if their are better cases for around the same price. Also, does the HAF X have dust filters? I had a case without dust filters and hated it because of the dust build-up inside the case, my current antec 1200 case has dust filters and I've never seen any need to dust out the inside of the case, just clean the filters every so often.

I don't think the HAF-X was never "the king of cases", perhaps king of its price range but that's debatable as well.  The HAF-X has filters for the front intake, side intake, and top exhaust ports for some reason.  None on the bottom.  Personally I'd choose this over the HAF-X, unless you plan to water cool.

That case has the best airflow design - intake from the bottom and exhaust through the top.  This makes sense as heat rises, and this wind tunnel cools the important parts without restriction (GPU and CPU).  Quite a few people here and on OCN went from an HAF case to a case with this airflow design (RV02/RV03/FT02), and got a noticeable temperature drop on their GPU(s).  The RV03 has a removable filter for both bottom intake fans.  Don't bother installing fans in the optional spots - this will mess up the airflow.  It also has great cable management with lots of space behind the motherboard tray.  I still need to get one myself... one downside is that you can only use a 180mm or shorter PSU in it.  This isn't much of a downside though - you can still fit some super high wattage PSUs in it, such as the Antec HCP 1200, Enermax MAXREVO 1350W, and even the LEPA 1600W.

The Haf X is still rated the top air flow case on the market as equipped with below cooling system.

The Haf X does have a psu filter at the bottom of the case.

I would also recommend the Haf XM as it is a mid size case but has dust filters

I also love my HAF-X case. I haven't had an enormous amount of cases but the HAF-X is by far the best one I have had.

Looking at reviews the Raven 03 got same performance as the HAF, and the quality of the Fan are much better on Raven!!
and btw i think that the HAF it's much much uglier...
    just my opinion...

I'm actually disappointed with my HAF-X. I have the model that has the possible short in the front panel so most of it is taped with lots of electrical tape just to be safe and even then most of it is unplugged.

The air filters on the front and side are very disapointed (compared to some of the previous cases I've owned). I would be hard pressed to call them filters, they trap some dust but definitely nowhere near most of it. Also my original version does not have a dust filter below the PSU :(

I just built a new gaming rig with this case, and I am beyond impressed!  Rotating fan colors, (4 x 200 MM fans, 1 140 MM fan, and 1 120 fan)  All different colors!

Lights around the power button is absolutely epic!!!

Also, with my i5 2500 k, My idle temps are as low as 19 degrees celcius! WHOOOAAAA!

Best case ever!  I got this for $129.99 (on sale last week) with free shipping!  Would totally suggest this over the HAF X

i love my haf-x for water cooling, i wish it was about a half inch taller because of push pull with the XSPC rads being so thick.

Yeah the HAF-X is clearly not the best water cooling case, however it's one of the best all around cases since it is still a good option for water cooling (360mm rad by default, can easily add a 240 rad in addition with less modding than you'd need to do in the 800D/700D), plus it has lots of airflow and great cable management.  But if you're never going to water cool, I'd go for the Silverstone Raven RV03.

your house must be freezing cold, thats 66'F (avg room temp being 72) your 6' colder and thats not even account for heat from the chip. so you keep your house like 10'C(50'f)?

I don't think that is all that unusual, in my HAF X case I see idles temps ~ 17c with my i7 980 and I know I don't keep my A/C below 75.

We keep the house at 72 degrees. My computer is by an Ac vent, which does help keep it cool. However, having 4 x 200 mm fans in my case does wonders! I'm not using any water cooling in my case. I'm using a hyper n 520.

All this and more is why my choice is this case handsdown. It truly is awesome!!!

Edit: not to mention my other 120 mm fan and 140 mm fan

Sub ambient temps on an air cooler... seems like a sensor error.

I watch my temps constantly with core temp. My average idle temp is around 24 degrees Celsius. I even turned my case fans to "low" setting because of amazing temps

My asus sabertooth z77 probably also helps my temps stay cool. It's a fantastic mobo (extra small fans help cool back side of motherboard)

System temp is at 24 and cpu temp is at 21 idle, here ( got the HAF-X btw) I think because heatsinks use evaporation that they can get cooler than the air blowing across the fins, or something like that. ( using a TRUE 120 ultra on a i7 920 (nehalem I think, first version) with push-pull at 1.364v)  temps for the cores however are about 36 for core 1 and 32 for cores 2-4

i love my case, i'll stare at it. sometimes i'll open it up, just to look inside. i'll stare at the EVGA red led heart beat and then a dragon lands in front of me, now i'm half dead...bathing in fire.

Re:HAF X still the King of cases, or are there better options for around the same price? 2012/05/17 21:54:08 (permalink)
I was thinking of selling my HAF X in favor for the 800D when undergoing my first water cooling setup but didn't want to mod it to fit my 4-Way mobo, very glad I decided to stick with it.

I was able to fit a 480 and 360 rad inside of her

My case I use for rigs at conventions and events is the HAF-X. It's a double edged sword though. Great sturdy case with excellent ambient air conditions in it. On the other hand it's like picking up a huge chunk of cement to lug around. I still love the build options it allows though.

One thing I think most cases in general and the HAF series in particular have missing are carry handles or recesses in the case design to get a better grip on it to carry around. I'd be very happy if there was an accessory top or new HAF design that encorporated a carry handle on the top over the fan grills.

Also, with my i5 2500 k, My idle temps are as low as 19 degrees celcius! WHOOOAAAA!

your house must be freezing cold, thats 66'F (avg room temp being 72) your 6' colder and thats not even account for heat from the chip. so you keep your house like 10'C(50'f)?

I don't think that is all that unusual, in my HAF X case I see idles temps ~ 17c with my i7 980 and I know I don't keep my A/C below 75.

Air cooling by definition is restricted to the base ambient temperature of the room. There simply is no way to go below it unless you're piping in AC straight into the case from the duct. Think about what you're saying for a second. How can an air cooled rig be lower than the room ambient air temp? 17C = 62F. Same goes for water cooling minus chillers. Ambient room temp sets the baseline. Neither air cooling nor water cooling can go sub-ambient by default. Only way around that is to lower the temps below room ambient via direct AC piping or a water chiller.

thinking they may have some bad sensors there, what i was getting at and what brad said are simple facts of thermal dynamics.
