Does replacing the stock 230mm fans on the side and top of the case with 120mm fans improve airflow/cooling any?  If so what would be some good fans?

Replacing the 230mm fans would help considerably, the 230mm fans can't move air for the life of them.  The one on the front struggles to circulate air around the case due to the HDD cage, but it does cool the hard drives fairly well.  As a top fan it does a bad job since it uses sleeve bearings which can only perform properly in a vertical mounting orientation.

Thermalright FDB fans are easily the best 120mm x 25mm case fans on the market.  Large RPM range, high end fluid dynamic bearings and affordable.

Thanks for the info and link.  I figured that swapping out the fans would help but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to waste money doing something that wouldn't help.

Would it be better to switch it all to 120mm fans? or to just upgrade to better 230mm fans?

There are no better 230mm fans.  There are better 200mm fans, but multiple 120mm fans will always be better.  By default, you can fit a 120mm fan in the front but unless you get a high CFM fan, just leave it or upgrade this to a Storm Force 200mm fan.  The Storm Force 200mm fans cool better (1000 RPM/142 CFM/23 DBA vs 700 RPM/110 CFM/19 DBA) and it does use the same mounts as the 230mm fans.  As for the side panel, multiple 120mm fans are the way to go.

If you want the best possible airflow and you don't have a custom water cooling loop, put your PSU on top and use two 120mm bottom intake fans.  But make sure your bottom and top fans are not sleeve bearing fans - sleeve bearing fans suck horribly in a horizontal mounting orientation.  Use ball bearing or fluid dynamic bearing fans on the top or bottom (and preferably everywhere else because they're just better) but be weary of cheap fans that have fluid dynamic bearings, many are just modified sleeve bearings that still suck in a horizontal mounting orientation.  Thermalright's X-Silent fans use such bearings.

are you looking to have LED fans or just regular non colored fans?

I changed out both the top and side 230mm fans for 4 intake 120mm and 3 exhaust 120mm fans and my case runs very cool. I kept the front intake in and the rear 140mm exhaust and they seem to be doing a very good job.

I put in these red LED fans to give my case a good look.

How much change in temps were there?

I'm heading to microcenter this weekend probably to pick up some 120's for my side and top fans (as discussed per bored) but I'm not sure what brands to check out specifically for case fans / 120's. I went to your thread bored but I wasn't sure if those fans you recommended for CPU heatsinks could be used as case fans as well.

My recommended fans were for CPU heat sinks, but they're great case fans as well.  Those are my top recommendations, but Yate Loons are the best if you're on a budget.  Xigmatek has decent fans, but they're priced a tad bit too high since Thermalright FDB fans are only a few bucks more.

Was hoping those Scythe's weren't too bad, got a bunch at my microcenter. No Yate's though. /sigh.

Thanks though : ) Guess it's to NewEgg again.

Boredgunner, I need your help. I want to replace all my fans in my HAF X as the ambient temp in my room is very high and the stock fans are garbage. Money isn't an issue as I'm willing to shell out the cash for ease of mind.  So far, the only changes I've made to the case is moved the side window fan up on top and purchased another 200x30 cooler master for the window. Also added a Ultra Kaze 120x38 133.60cfm 45.90dBa fan for the VGA Fan Dock.
I'm looking to go for multiple 120's to replace the 200mm and 230mm. I think for the VGA Dock, I'm going to go with the Delta PFB1212UHE - 5500 RPM/252.85 CFM/66.5 DBA, but not sure on the rest. I will buy purchasing a Lamptron FC5 fan controller as well.  What fans do you think will best suit me?

well for my case i don't know the temperature change with ambient temps by changing the fans out because I did not run the case with the stock cooling. I just put the 120s on as i did the build for a fresh run but keeps my temps between 17C-33C idle depending on my house temps.

Most Deltas and San Ace fans are excellent and will work well with a fan controller.  They have a good selection of 120mm x 25mm and 120mm x 38mm fans.

On the HAF-X, three but the last one would partially be in the drive bay area and you don't want that, it would exhaust air before it reaches the motherboard area.  Two is fine although you won't see much of a difference by replacing the top exhaust fan.  Using a high quality fan in the VGA air duct will yield the most noticeable results.  Replacing the side fan with something better like multiple 120mm or 92mm fans or a Silverstone AP181 would help too but this would require modding since it only has mounts for Cooler Master's subpar 200mm/230mm fans.

I think I'll just replace the VGA Holder fan, add two 120's for the window and replace the rear exhaust. Most of the heat is dissipating from the rear anyways.  The top ones, I'll just leave them be for now. I'll see what I can fit in the front.  Thanks!

When air cooling I actually prefer to use no rear exhaust fan, since I use more powerful fans on the heat sinks (high performance 120mm x 38mm fans) so typical 120mm x 25mm case fans would just harm performance.

You can try to get some Prolimatech 120mm x 38mm fan clips and use some 120mm x 38mm fans (Delta if you can tolerate high noise at high speeds, if not then go for San Ace, if you can't get them then go for Panaflo) but these clips may not be a perfect fit.  Nothing cable ties won't solve!  Use push/pull 120mm x 38mm fans on the outside of the NH-D14, while the middle should either be empty or have a shroud in it.

Does this (bolded) just apply to the HAF-X or most top-fan-cases?
I guess in my case (literally), would replacing the top 200mm fan with 2 - 120mm's on the top of the 932 provide better cooling, or should I just by side fans and leave the big 200mm on top?
    Thanks again.

That was a general statement, backed by plenty of personal experience.

Use push/pull 120mm x 38mm fans on the outside of the NH-D14, while the middle should either be empty or have a shroud in it.

interesting! never thought about using push/pull method on the NH-D14, I'm really excited to try this out now. I don't care about the high DB's as I play with headphones anyways.

Yep, although I didn't remember the 38mm Prolimatech clips working.  Looks like they do, great news.

Looks like I'm going with a pair of Sanyo Denki San Ace 9G1212H1011's for the push pull and Delta 120x38mm FFB1212EHE for the VGA Holder. Not sure on the fans for the window yet.. But it's a start! :)
