I don't know how people are posting Bios templates with out knowing it's stable or am i missing something here. I also read Prime does not use 6c/12t when running the Blend test, but the small FFT'S test would. I just want to make sure that the oc i am running is stable. I can get this cpu up to 4.6Ghz Linx stable and still stay under 85*c and it almost seems to good to be true.

Running prime blend now, all 12 threads 100%

They all show they are using 12 threads 100% thats my problem . Did you miss this "Prime does not use 6c/12t when running the Blend test, but the small FFT'S test would"

I am having to use OCCT to test stability. And I am having problems with CPU test 2 in Vantage The hang has been cured with the new version but not the very low scores.

I have not tried OCCT yet. How are you setting it up for testing? Did your 975 score more with CPU test 2? I checked and scored 222.82 but have know idea if thats good or bad.

Emmett...Would you try running the small ftt's in Prime and let us know if your temps go up. Now i am with CKY2K and do not trust Linx anymore until they update it.

 I just read a few places that running small ftt's draws more power from the wall and creates more heat than LinX (opposite of the 920's). I just tried OCCTPT3.1.0 on a stock 980X and still LinX 8 threads creates more heat. I never really tried OCCT so I might not have the right setting. It seems LinPack might be the problem, IBT gives the same results as LinX .

 Tonight, I going to put A batch back in ( I know that chip a little better) and use the cheezy Kill-A-Watt and see what happens.

Cky2k.... Have you found that Prime blend is the best way at the moment to test for stability or the 8 threads in Linx.

Ok expedision.

I lowered Vtt to +0 and timings to 6-6-6-19 1.55 vdimm

Small fft's prime 95 and my temps were up 6c across the board. and failed after about 45 mins.

emmett.

gonna restest at original vtt and vdimm...

Seems like these chips LOVE v-core, unless you get sub zero. Every time mine failed, more v-core cured it. Also did not notice any huge temp difference either.

Before I even think of buying a Gulftown, I have a question. Does it run cooler or hotter at similar overclocks has a 45nm i7?

I can run up to 4.6Ghz on air and stay below 80*c if you believe Linx.

Do you think that the 980x just run that much cooler. If they do, this cpu is worth every penny.

Thanks for proving my point! Linx does not stress the 980x like it should. Prime small FFT's Test should be used for stabity testing until Linx is fixed.

 I don't know if this useful. I don't think so, it's a little interesting.

 What I used: Linx 0.6.4, Intel Burn Test 2.4, OCCT 3.1.0, Prime 25.9, Cinebench 11.5, 3DMark Vantage 102_1901 and CPU Torch .05. Every program had the CPU and all 12 threads at 100% except LinX and IBT when set at 8 threads, CPU was at 67%. Watts readings was taking from a Kill-A-Watt P3

 This was with a 980X B batch at stock setting (my CPU-Z screen shot is in this thread at post# 87) The hardware used is my sig ( that CPU at 4.6GHz, an ES A0 Gulftown is dead. R.I.P.). Just the computer was plug into the Kill-A-Watt.

 Vantage I could not run the second CPU test. CPU Torch uses LinX and Prime together. It was using Prime 25.8 and I could not set the threads for LinX and not sure on what version.

 All tests were run in the order I'm posting them. No reboots and the room temp was 24c. The temps are the highest and lowest cores.

IMO: I still think the idle temps are not correct (way low). I've tried three 980X's an AO, A batch and B batch on a 762 and a 759 with BIOS 49. My idle temps with the 3 CPU's (on air) were all about the same. Between the cores, they are 18c to 26c with room temp of 24c.

I think this will be beneficial both to those who already have this processor, and those who will shortly be purchasing it.
As usual, overclock at your own risk.
Thanks all!

Got my unit today after alot of struggle, ended up with a Costa Rica 3003B331 batch--done a few hours of testing and tweeting upward to get used to the 980x.  Currantly at 35x 135 for 4713.5mhz  temps under load are running in the 50s or just touching 60 which is down considerably from what I was seeing with a my third and best 920 at around 4300mhz.  The temps on these 980x are unbelievebly low, they are so low that I'm a little afraid to push the volts higher yet though the temps indicate that I could go quite a bit further.  They seem to be voltage centric always generating a BS 101 or 'clock interval' as an error and with more volts up they go.  Don't seem to like alot of VTT although I only did a little experimenting with higher BCLK to achieve 4mhz+ results.  Going to some work for about 24 hours and then push it along some more.  Good Luck to all

Re:Gulftown 6-Core BIOS Template thread 2010/03/27 09:09:16 (permalink)
 expedision, Right now I'm thinking Prime Small FFT's is the best for stability testing for the 980X and then run some Prime blend. LinX 8 threads still pushes my highest temps. I am at 4.6GHz ( B batch). My temps with LinX 12 threads is about (highest core) 85c. When I set it at 8 threads, 3 cores are well over 100c.

 I'm not sure what the TJMax temps are and not sure how RealTemp gets the defaults for the TJMax. On an ES/AO and A batch the TJMax in RealTemp 3.58_1 is 105c. Now with this B batch the TJMax is 101c.

 firerx, I was thinking this B batch was going to be pretty good with a default setting of the vcore at 1.16V. At a vcore of 1.50V my temps are over 100C at 4.7GHz. I've only been OC'ing this chip for about an hour so I'm not totally sure about this one yet. One thing the characteristics of the B batch is right on with the I7's. The ES/A0 and the A batch are very weird. Like, how slow they are in the BIOS and freezing up in the BIOS, very slow boots, weird boots into windows, etc (with or without OC's).The B batch is like the way it should be (this just my experience). All those little quirks doesn't really matter to me just at least it's stable

 If I had to pick out of the 3, right now. I would go with the ES/AO chip. I wish I wasn't such a dumb a** and cooked it. I should be getting another ES/AO next week (I hope). Again, I haven't spent much time OC'ing with the B batch, so things might change. My goal is 6 hours of Small and Blend of Prime @ 4.6GHz with 12GB of ram on normal air cooling for 24/7 usge. I think I'm might have to lower goals ...

 (More useless info ) As for the wattage and OC's. At 4.6GHz with the same chip. Idle is 525W, must of the other tests shoot it up to 800W - 875W.

The idea of small FFTs is to fit neatly into the cache registers L2/L3 and would be more stressful for the cpu with load of heat being generated. Always good to run "Blend" for an extended period,  at least a complete cycle or up to 12 hrs as I do to stress the IMC on the cpu. I've been using Prime 95 for years and it is the best overall stress test IMHO. Couple of notes:

FYI,

"You can control which FFT sizes are tested by the torture test.  In prime.txt
you can set:
    MinTortureFFT=n
    MaxTortureFFT=m
Where n and m are in "K".  The default for n and m is 8 and 1024 which will
run tests on FFT sizes rom 8K to 1024K.  Set n to 8 and m to 16 and you will
run only small FFT sizes.  These FFTs will fit in the L2 cache and may be
more stressful to the CPU
."

You can control how many minutes each FFT size is tested by the torture test.
In prime.txt set:
    TortureTime=n
The default value is 15 minutes.

"you can override the info in local.txt:
    NumCPUs=n
    CpuNumHyperthreads=1 or 2
    CpuSpeed=s
Where n is the number of physical CPUs or cores, not logical CPUs created by
hyperthreading. Choose 1 for non-hyperthreaded and 2 for hyperthreaded. Finally,
s is the speed in MHz."

Finally, from the WiKi below, some good info on FFTs for your viewing pleasure (boy how I recall this from my collegiate days ):

Nice , Thank you for that tip.
