Hi there. I've read in the reviews on the card that on the 2nd bios, with more aggressive settings, EVGA gtx970 ssc acx 2.0+ spin its fans all the time running them even at idle at 600rpm to begin with. Then it is supposed to ramp them up once temp reach 40 degrees Celsius and gradually raise to over 2000rpm at threshold temp of 80 degrees. The first bios in turn is supposed to render the fan blades motionless up to 60 degrees. With the unit I purchased it is not the case. On both bioses my card's cooling remains passive until 65 and 70 degrees respectively and then the fans start to speed up roughly to 25-30% of max rpm as reported by EVGA Precision software. I haven't seen them go anywhere higher than that as my temp never exceeded 74degrees. I wonder if that's normal behaviour for the card or are my bioses somewhat ' messed up'? Or maybe I the information I read in the revuews is wrong? Could someone help me get rid if any doubts on that issue. Frankly speaking I'd like my card to have a more aggressive fan curve just to make sure that my card doesn't overheat. Should I create custom Precision profile if so how to do go about it? Your assistance would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I want you to call EVGA at 888-881-3842 and go to tech support. From there explain to the representative you would like to have the BIOS for your card emailed to you. You will need to know your card model and maybe serial number. From there follow the instructions provided in the email and try not to mess up as that would be bad. This would fix any issue with the vBIOS being off or something.

You can also download Precsion X here:http://www.evga.com/precision/
and watch this YouTube videos for guidance for making a fan curve https://youtube.com/watch?v=1it13tS1wN I know the video is old and your Precision X may loom slightly diffrient, but the concept is still there and it should be pretty straight forward. You should also be aware that EVGA does not void your warranty for ANYTHING done in Precision X.

If you have any questions feel free to ask and I can help more. I just feel that a visual aid would make it more straight forward.

    Hello Boogas,

The behavior of your GTX 970 SSC is completely normal. This specific model does not have a secondary bios w/ a more aggressive fan curve. That feature is found on our FTW and FTW+ models. As mentioned you can use Precision X to set your own fan curve as aggressive or passive as you like. All and all your GTX 970 SSC is perfectly capable of staying within safe temperatures on its own with its default fan settings as this design was intentional when Nvidia developed the Maxwell 900 series. Also keep in mind that the cards do not exhaust the heat generated by the GPU so make sure you do have enough air flow to pull the heat out of your case.

Hi there. Thank you for your thorough clarification. It raises my next question, though leaving me a bit confused. You said that my card does not have a secondary bios (with a more aggresive fan curve) so what does the flicking of the little switch on the edge of the card do? Is it secondary bios or not? As far as the heat is concerned I was under the impression that it did exhaust at least some of the heat but apparently most of it stayed within the case because it got sucked by one of the fans on my cpu heatsink directly above my first pcie slot. As a result my cpu temp rose by a couple of degrees. This is the issue I have to yet resolve as I would like to add another card for sli. The temp inside my case stays within reasonable limit of 31-33 degrees it is only the problem of directing gpu generated heat away from the cpu heatsink as currently it just passes dead straight through it before it escapes via exhaust fans at the back of the case. Maybe I should install the card in tge bottom pcie slot. I'm also toying with the idea of installing water cooling on the cpu. I just wonder if I am able to bring the heat to heel once I have bought another card. Or maybe I will make use of the step-up program to upgrade to gtx980 or 980ti card.

Thank you kindly for your advice Bsmegreg, too. I had been using evga precision software with my previous gtx680 card although it wasn't of evga brand before switched so I know more or less how to handle it. I am just perplexed as to what the switch on the edge of my new card does as I have seen little difference in fan operation between two modes.

Can you please specify the part number of your product so that we can confirm if your model does indeed have a secondary bios setting.

So I was right after all - dual bios it is then. So according to the link posted one bios operates the way it should as the fans kick in roughly when the temp reaches 60-62 degrees. Thats the one I switched to after I had been using the one the card got shipped with. And that one in turn span fans after temperarure climbed to 70 degrees and basically at 25% rpm it maintained 72-73 degrees at load. I just wanted to know if one of the bioses supposed to spin the fabs at all times as this is what I read in press reviews on the product. But the cards being reviewed might as well be some early samples with different bioses... I just want to make sure that may card operates as it should.
