Hi, I just installed a brand new gtx 950 ftw card on my Linux rig. An i5 4690k with a hyper 212 Evo cooler and z97-hd3 mobo with 16g ram make up the rest of my system.
I got the card installed, successfully got the 352 version installed on my xubuntu 15.04 os.
Now when I start up the machine I'm ar around the 50 degrees mark but the minute I load up Firefox with 15 tabs I hit the 60s. I have not even started gaming and I'm worried these temps are a bad sign. One thing to bear in mind is that I am in India where the ambient itself is very high, so are these temps acceptable? What should I look out for?
Please help me out as the whole purpose behind this card was to indulge in some gaming but now I'm scared to do so :(
Thanks, Ananth

Normal. The fans on your card don't run until 60-65c.

But isn't the idle too high? Also what's acceptable while actually gaming?
Thanks for your response btw!

Idle temperatures, even high ones do not effect the lifespan of the card, unless that card is pushing 75C+ on idle, it is working just fine. That said if you would like the card to run cooler, when idling, you can download EVGA PrecisionX, and create a custom fan curve so that the fan is running all the time and keeping the chip cooler, but realistically the fan is likely to fail sooner than the chip is anyway As far a gaming is concerned, the temperatures are fine up to about the mid 80C range, much beyond that will reduce performance or if it is 90C+ may cause the computer to hard shutdown to protect the hardware from overheating

Yes, personally that would be too high for me. 75c or lower would be acceptable for gaming. The 950 has a max allowed temp of 95c.

Thanks Ray. Unfortunately precision x is not an option for me as I run Linux. I am trying to figure out how to set up a custom fan curve in Linux but it seems fairly complex.
But from what you are saying, my temps look OK especially considering the fact that my ambient is fairly high. I just wanted some reassurance before I actually start gaming. Don't want to screw things up this early in the card's life cycle......

One small clarification - idle temps is temps when not gaming right? Browsing, video watching - do they all belong at the idle temps level? Just wanted to ask in order for me to keep in mind while monitoring......

Ok, I just played half life 2 for 5 minutes and temps went up to 71 and then tapered off to mid/lates 60s. Does that look good?

Your temps look good, however, a GTX 950 FTW features a QSD BIOS (Quick Switch Dual BIOS) and dBi Noise Inverter..With the QSD BIOS switch in the dBi position (the default position), the fans turn off below 60C, resulting in slightly elevated GPU temp at idle/low load conditions..With the QSD BIOS switch in the FTW Performance BIOS position, the fans do not turn off and run in Low RPM Mode below 60C, which can result in lower idle/low load GPU temp..The Power Target is also slightly increased in the FTW Performance BIOS position..Otherwise, your GPU temps look fine..The maximum GPU temp for a GTX 950 as specified by NVIDIA is 95C..If you want lower idle/low load temps, switch to the FTW Performance BIOS if you haven't yet (or are even aware of it, as some people are not) so the fans never stop..Move the switch and restart your PC, or move it before starting your PC for the BIOS settings to become effective. Scroll down here and click on the QSD BIOS link, in the next page click on QSD BIOS which shows you the location and positions of the BIOS switch.

@Bob That is indeed news to me. Like you said I was not even aware of it. So considering the fact that my system runs 24x7 and the fact that I am in India, I should set the BIOS switch to FTW right? At least that way I get better temps at idling. However the only think I am worried about is the fact that @Ray pointed out - that the fans are likely to die out first.... so in this FTW position, am I ushering in the demise of the fan faster? I dont see how to compare the tradeoffs and decide one way or the other - can you let me know what you would do?

The fans are long-life, quality, double ball bearing fans and I would not worry in the least bit about them running in Low RPM Mode all the time under 60C..Fan quality/lifespan has come a long way since back in the day. As it stands now, your GPU temp is acceptable and normal..It's up to you if you want to use the FTW Performance BIOS for enhanced overclocking and cooling potential, many people do..Try it and see how it works out..However, using the dBi BIOS won't hurt a thing either..Again, your GPU temps are acceptable and normal. Another thing that can sometimes help with idle temps when browsing (or otherwise) is to make sure the Power Management Mode in NVIDIA Control Panel -> Manage 3D Settings is set to Adaptive and not Prefer Maximum Performance.

In my control panel, I see only a PowerMizer setting whose preferred mode is set to Auto and Current Mode is Adaptive. Please bear in mind I am running Linux (xubuntu!)

So is PowerMizer what you were referring to? So I guess Auto is correct right, as it says the Current Mode is Adaptive.. Also another thing I noticed is that whenever I run the control panel via Terminal I get the following: ** Message: PRIME: No offloading required. Abort ** Message: PRIME: is it supported? no I got no idea what that means...... Screen shot attached.....

I can only assume that PowerMizer Adaptive would be the same as NVIDIA Control Panel Adaptive..I have no idea about those PRIME error messages, but I do see a lot about them when I search

From what I understood it has more to do with Optimus for switching based on GPU loads. I have disabled Intel Graphics in my BIOS, so I dont know if it even applies to me but it would be good to understand anyhow :(

Isn't there anything on the box or in any enclosed literature about the QSD BIOS or did you just overlook it?..But anyway, don't feel like the Lone Ranger because you're not the first person that didn't realize their card features a multiple/dual BIOS, so, glad to shed some light on that for you at least..Did you try it out? Bjorn3D has a decent EVGA GTX 950 FTW review here about the features, overclocking and other stuff about your card..NVIDIA has good info too about the reference GTX 950, GPU Boost 2.0 and other supported technologies here if you're interested.

@Bob Finally, managed to open up the machine and set up the BIOS switch and now I am idling at around 43 degrees with the fan at around 600 RPM. Attached is a screen shot... So that sounds good right? I have attached a screen shot of the monitoring program... Will do some gaming and let you know what my temps are.. Yesterday (without this switch change) I was averaging 70-75 for around 15-2- minutes of Divinity. Hopefully this setting brings it down...

OK then, I'm not coming to visit (Keep my room 26C or Colder - ac is a good thing to have ) The temp of your PC components is Relative to the ambient room temps. 37 C room & 41 C PC is good Gaming and benchmark or folding will increase the Temps What is important is the difference in Temps and Not just the Max temp. So with Room @ 37 C & PC @ 41 C = Delta T of only 4C

Delta T < 15 C on water and < 50 C on air - (in my opinion, of course lower is better) on a loaded - working hard system Folding - using the GPU to work data for distributed computing - like helping solve complex medical research LINK http://forums.evga.com/FoldingHome-Help-and-Guides-f70.aspx

I apologize, should have waited a little more..... :( When you say water/air, I assume you mean cooler right? And I dont run any custom cooler for my 950, I do have a hyper 212 EVO for my 4690K. So when you say <50, you mean I can go up to late 80s as far as GPU temp goes right? Does sound scary though....
