I installed a PCI-E ssd into my system over the weekend, and everything works great. The only thing that is really strange is it will not all not allow me to use my second graphics adapter in the system (no matter how I arrange the cards). I have 2 Nvidia Quadro NVS 450's installed in the system for a multi-monitor workstation. When the second card is in the system, there is artifacts on the POST screen. It will allow me to get into windows, but the cards, and drivers can not be detected. If I go into the device manager, nothing is listed under display adapters, or unknown devices. Once I remove the PCI-E ssd, both cards, and drivers are detected properly. Anyone have any suggestions? thanks for your help.

Anything else installed in pcie?

PCI-E Lane Distribution
 PE1 – x16 (x8 if PE2 is used)
 PE2 – x8 (x4 if PE3 is used)
 PE3 – x4
 PE4 – x1
 PE5 – x1 (x16 Physical)

You might be having issues due to bandwidth if you're using anything but the first 3 slots or you could need the extra pcie power to be plugged in.

Depending on your Bios, you may need to specify that it should pull from 6 and not 24 pin.

What PSU are you using?

I think it's your PCI-E lane speeds. You need x8, x8 for SLI and when you use the third PCI-E llane it changes your config to x16, x4, x4 and a GeForce video board will NOT run at x4 speeds.

As Zuhl has stated, SLI will not function in x4 mode, which this will be the case, if you have installed the SD into Slot 3. The CPU only has 16 available PCIe lanes and this cannot be increased without the help of a PLX chip, which the FTW does not have.

He mentioned both units for monitor support, don't think he's trying to enable SLI, which would disable monitors on the second GPU anyway.

Thanks for the prompt feedback. I am using a Corsair 850w PSU. The PCI-E bandwidth issue makes sense. The only thing that makes me question that is prior to the SSD, the PCI-E slots 1-2-3 were all occupied. Slots 1 and 2 had the same video cards installed, I had a PCI-E intel network adapter installed in the 3rd slot. It worked fine and should have ran at 8X-4x-4x according to the documentation. The system isn't running any games, or anything graphics intensive. I just need a bunch of monitor outputs that are all display port. I did notice the PCI-E power plug on the bottom corner of the MB. I have a mid-size tower which makes it impossible to plug-in the aux pci-e power for testing.I think they should have designed the power plug to point outward. Luckly, I found a low profile angled PCI-E extension cable online. This will allow me to see if it's a power issue, or not. I guess it doesn't hurt to give it a try at this point.

May be more options to look at while that comes in but that PSU would be sufficient.

Did you migrate the OS to the new drive, clean install or have it as secondary storage?

If it was migrated, could be an issue with file integrity somewhere with the OS or display drivers. Clean installation of the GPU drivers should be done if not already.

If the OS is still on the original drive then that wouldn't be what we are looking for but if did migrate, might want to go back and verify that original config still works.

I installed it as a secondary storage device first, so I can try to clone the original OS drive. It did not work, so I ended up doing a clean install on the new ssd. Same issues with the old, and the clean installation.

Just an update. Connecting the extra PCI-E power to the MB did not help.

I tried it with and w/o the NIC, same issue. I am only using 2 sata connections, 1 for another SSD drive, 1 for the optical drive.
