Will the 285.79 drivers work? 

No, it won't work for the GTX 560 Ti 448 Classified without being modified. The 290.36 is the only one you can currently download from Nvidia that supports the card.

One last thing I wanted to know. I think I know the answer to it, but I'm not to sure.

Since I'm using the 290 beta drivers, is it normal for some games to detect the card as unknown?

I just started up l4d2 right now and got a pop up window saying unknown card detected and some other junk and asked if I'm sure I wanted to continue.

Would new drivers in the future fix this

More likely that LD42/Steam hasn't been updated to recognize your GPU. I got that when I first had my GTX 470's, It doesn't matter and won't change how it runs. There should be an option when the window pops up to send your GPU info. Select dont show again and you should be good to go.

I have no choice man...I have a shock collar that goes off whenever there is a reply to a thread I'm subscribed to. As soon as I regain consciousness, I reply...that's why sometimes they don't make sense...

This is most bizarre,
 
I got the same problem. I also went from a 9800GT/ For a while I thought I was reading my post over at another forum ;)
 
Went through support, they said I had a DOA card. Got it replaced. came home, same problem with the 2nd card!
 
Ok. I am going to give the betta drivers a try. Be right back.
 
FYI, something that is strange is that Device Manager shows the adaptor as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

Wow, the CD drivers made evrything work!

That is a 1st. CD Drivers better than downloaded one.
