I have a user who works in our video department... instead of doing RAID in a reliable piece of hardware, he chose to buy a LaCie 2Big Quadra 6TB "Raid" external storage without even consulting IT first.... Lo' and behold, he had a derp moment and now the thing wont work. The front LED is solid red, but the rear LED's blink blue. I believe according to LaCie, this means that there is overheating. However when I drop those into another chassis (same model) the same thing happens. Windows will see these drives in Disk Management Console but will not show them in explorer.
Long story short: I'm trying to extract the 3TB of raw format footage that he says is just "oh so dire to have" even though this device has been sitting for a long time. I dont want my department to pony up $300/drive to recover the data through LaCie, so I'd like to try everything first.
Things I've tried:
- Mounting drives in my own workstation, as stated before, they show in Disk Management but not explorer. I cannot assign drive letters to them either.
- Used Paragon Hard Disk management to copy to a blank drive using exclusions in hopes that only the data gets xferred and not the file system. Negative on that btw (Paragon did almost a 1 for 1 clone)
- Booted into Ubuntu in hopes I could mount the drive and transfer the data over to a blank one but I get errors saying invalid format/file structure.
If you have any more ideas that involve using my workstation, then go for it. I will not put these drives into our servers as to me it's not worth the risk to our working infrastructure when he was dumb enough to purchase this crap without asking us what he should get to avoid these issues.
