Re:Get It Colder......2 2009/12/27 15:42:42 (permalink)
Well I just wanted to pop in here and say hello, since I flagged the EVGA Enthusiasts team over on hwbot.org.  Figured I should stop posting all the time over on the p55/200 series boards and bring the posts over here.

I run an air cooling system that sounds something like a mixture between a washer machine and one of those old middle school window air conditioning units...needless to say it's loud and I personally enjoy white noise so it doesn't bother me at all.  Inside I have 9x 3k RPM Ultra Kaze's, 2 of which are part of my own custom designed cooling tunnel that I scrapped together with parts from Home Depot.  Also there are a couple of other fans (ATCS 840 stock case fans etc) which brings my grand total fan count to 13.  (Extreme...air cooling?!)  I'm able to push core temperature idle on stock 5 degrees under ambient temperature with my current air configuration last time I checked.  I don't ever run stock anymore but I can clock down and check where I'm at currently if any ones curious.

This is my first self-made computer and I'm pretty damn proud of it, I've been pushing it for the last 3 months on and off, gradually raising my scores to the point where I felt it was about time I found out how they stacked up.  Had a bit of a shock when I realized my physx-on scores (P28572) wasn't considered legitimate, so this weekend I've been pushing as hard as possible with Physx off.

Current scores listed here:

http://hwbot.org/community/user/fiveby5

3DVantage:

http://www.hwbot.org/compare.do?resultId=935294

Kind of at a loss right now on where to go next though, I'm debating between making the jump to the X58 platform or continuing my push on P55 since I am so comfortable with the current CPU.  I've almost bought the p55 classified board 3 times now, but I'm not sure just how much improvement (beyond 3-way SLI) I'll get from it overclocking-wise.  If you guys have any input I'd really appreciate it, as jumping to X58 is going to mark a sizable investment that I'm not to eager about.

Anyways, hope everyone had a great Holiday season and I look forward to working with the team on benchmarks from here on out.

I was just looking at some of the i7 stability threads, and most people have over 54 Gflops.  I have 45.

My last red ram slot (closest to the 24 pin power plug) has not worked since I got that board.  I figure I am working on enough projects that I can afford some down time.  Downtime helps me not rush projects when I am doing them.  And this project I am working on takes the cake!

Don't even get me started with this, there were a few times this week I opened the window and let my ambient drop below 60 degrees to test some overclocks (mainly 4.6 ghz on air on my i7 860) and trust me it's a good thing I like the cold.

I've been wanting to do a re-application of my TIMs and reseating of my megathalem for weeks now but I keep putting it off since it's such a pain to undo all the zip ties and wiring that 13 fans and 2 PSU's cause.  My repeated justification has been "but if I upgrade my motherboard I'll have to do it anyways" but I'm slowly beginning to give way on this idea.

I don't see how legal issues can keep you from the forums, unless you are one of those uber hackers who got busted by the feds and its illegal for you to even touch a computer, or the legal issues are jailtime.  He just left.  he quit.  nothing more to it.  We miss him and wish him well on his travels.
