Re:Get It Colder II 2014/03/28 07:46:37 (permalink)
During All my Testing, It has become apparent to me that even though I am using Two 1600W PSU's dedicated to only the Four KPE's, I am still having problems going higher than 1.35v on the Graphics Card GPU's when trying to push Them Harder, So I think I'm going to try Two MORE PSU's and have a dedicated PSU for Each Card! (Looks like I'll be paying Higher Electric Bills Again. LOL!)

The present Two Rosewill 1600W PSU's I'm using have a Single Rail rated at 110A Each, But since I can't find any more of these units (i.e., Backordered/Not in Stock, etc...) I went ahead and bought Two Corsair AX1200i's that are Single Rail rated at 100A Each which as I have been advised in previous Posts/PM's/Discussions I need in order to Maximize the available Power when Pushing the OC'ing Limits.

Regardless of the Results that are achieved with using Four PSU's, I'll at least have ample PSU's available for practically Any Future Rigs that I Build!

Thanks Gomez99,

It may look like Massive Overkill to those who are Not into High-End Overclocking/Benchmarking, But Since I have Continuously been modifying/experimenting with my current Rig, This is but One of the Many Reasons I don't/can't have All my Components in a completely "Enclosed" Case.

WOW, your benching setup is looking more and more like K|ngP|ns every day, I have heard people say it's overkill, but if you got a card you can dump power into and it still works and clocks, it really does become necessary after a while.

LOL, Thanks Dave, Power Demands have come a Long Way since back when I thought My Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W was "More than you Needed" to handle All the Overclocking/Benching Loads.

Just Like I did in My Original "Get it Colder" Thread, The Only way to Push Component Limits is to Continually Experiment with Non-Standard Methods.

From All that I have Heard/Read/Seen, If Your going to REALLY Push KPE's upwards to 1.5Vcore +, You are going to Need at the Very Least Four Dedicated Single-Rail PSU's for the 4X KPE's.

Yeah, it really is absolutely nuts the power draw they are capable of.
Now, how are you powering the other PSU's, you got those 24pin splitters so the power button turns them all on, or are you jumpering the the GPU's PSU's at the 24 pin, or doing something else?

And the million dollar question is, how long until you hit your wall of clocking you can do at normal temps and crank up that chiller.    Never forget what thread this is

ATM I have the Two Rosewill 1600W Psu's jumpered at the 24-pin with My Thermaltake 1200W so that All three PSU's come on when I Hit the power button on the ASUS RIV BE, Which I'll be doing more of the same when I add the Two Corsair PSU's.

Right Now the Vapo is -35C while at 5.185GHz and the KPE's are around 18 - 20C with 65F Water Temps on the Chiller (While at Idle in the Windows Screen).

If I Don't Trip my House Electrical Panel Breakers after I add the other PSU's, I'll try Lowering the Chiller Temps More...........But You can Rest Assured that I will NEVER Forget What This Thread is All About!

Oh ok, I must have missed you going back to subzero on the cards, way cool.
What are you running your system ram at now, 2666, or did you push past that?  I know RAM speed can help PhysX performance/tests as well as some CPU tests, as I recall, we are using the same RAM.  I saw 3dMark say 1333, wasn't sure if it was accurate.

Also, curious if you have a pic of this monster, I love seeing the huge OC benching setups :D

Glad to hear you will always remember what this thread is about.

Well, The Cards aren't running at Sub-Zero Yet. They are running between 18C and 20C (64F to 68F) right now.
The G-Skill DDR3 2666 modules are running at 2709 in the ASUS BIOS even though CPU-Z shows them at 1354.

Here's a Few Quick Pics as of Today, But Remember, this is ALWAYS Changing.........

Houston, We Have Encountered a Problem..........

Apparently, After all the Time involved in connecting/arranging these Corsair AX1200i PSU's to My System, They will NOT operate in a tandem fashion like My Rosewill Hercules 1600W's due to the New "Digitally Controlled" Circuitry incorporated in the Units!

The Only GOOD News is that After I called Corsair to Verify this Problem and they Agreed that the AX1200i PSU's will Not Work in a Tandem arrangement, I called Newegg for an RMA and to My surprise they issued a Full Refund WITHOUT a Restocking Fee!

And so Now it's back to searching for Two more Rosewill 1600W PSU's once again before I can continue with my Testing.........

Thanks Halo,
There are Not a Lot of High Wattage/100A+ Single-Rail PSU's out there (and in Stock) that will Operate in the Parameters I need, But I'll find a Pair Somewhere sooner or later!

What about the EVGA 1300 G2? 108 amp single rail. Only 209.00 at Microcenter.
http://www.microcenter.co...t_Modular_Power_Supply
Just picked one up to replace my PcPower&Cooling 1200 unit, which was giving me restarts while gaming. Works like a charm. I picked it up at my local Microcenter store in Boston.

Thanks sgtharry, I Appreciate the Info.

I've seen the EVGA 1300 G2 available at Microcenter and have been debating about using Them (Mainly Gun-Shy after all the problems I just had with the Corsair's).
For Now, On top of searching for the Rosewill 1600W's that I KNOW work in a tandem arrangement, My Next step is to find at least Two of the EVGA SuperNOVA NEX1500's (Either New or Used) that I have definitely seen working in K|ngp|n's Quad SLI Rig that used Four of Those PSU's.

EVGA is coming out with a 1600 watt version soon. I guess the Supernova 1500's are hit and miss, as far as being "working" when you get them.
EVGA_JacobF
The new PSU is targeting 1600W, and plan on release in June timeframe.

Well, Today is Only April 2nd, So being realistic, I probably have more than Two Months to search for the other PSU's before EVGA releases their New 1600W.

It seems like there is Always a Least ONE Component needed that You either can't find, is discontinued or Nobody has any in Stock!

Hallowen,
ok first off, I misread that hyphen as a negative for the temp on your water for KPE's.

Next, for the power concern, the 1300G2 does not have the digital circuitry that the 1200i does, so it should work fine in parallel.  I checked with MikeF as well, and he confirmed he knows one who is already doing it.

So, you add in 2 1300G2's and be good to go.

Thanks Dave, That is some Good Info on the PSU's.

Right Now I have some New Tests to run before I decide on whether or not I really need to use another Two PSU's, Because Now I have finally got around to use My EVBot and see if That will solve the problem I am having getting over 1.35v Vcore with the Classy Tool Software Program I've been running.

I have been told by Gunslinger that One EVBot CAN control All Four KPE's at Higher Voltages on ALL the Parameters (NVVDD/NVPWM/NVOCP/FBVDD/FBOCP/PEXVDD/PEXPWM), which is what I'm going to find out Shortly after I finish configuring this unit!

In Regards to the EVGA EVBot, I have to tell You that using it to control the Four KPE's is MUCH Easier than the Classy Tool Software Method, Also I Think (But I'm Not Completely Positive with just One EVBot) You can change the Settings on All Four Cards While You are running the Benchmarks (I now see Why EVGA was forced to Discontinued it!)

With the 780i31.zip Firmware installed for the KPE's, I can control all the parameters INCLUDING Overvolt Protection settings of Normal/High/Extreme.

I'm Still Playing with the settings I want, But Here's a Pic of it attached to My KPE's AND a Video I Found on Youtube of the Firmware Menu on the EVBot I have.

Note that although it Dosen't show you on the Video, All of the Shown parameters are Adjustable!

Nothing Conclusive Yet, But here are the Results of Benching with only Two KPE's with a Dedicated 1600W PSU on Each Card at 1.4000v Vcore using the EVGA EVBot to get the First Fire Strike Score with puts me at Position #11 in The Futuremark Hall of Fame for 2-Way SLI.

Obviously, I can go Beyond the 1.35v Vcore Limit I Had with the Classy Tool Software Program using the EVBot.

FINALLY, I Just NOW Looked and Found out these were Finally IN STOCK at Newegg and so I Bought Two More Rosewill Hercules 1600W PSU's.

Hopefully I'll get them Next Week and then Find Out if a total of 6400W's on Four KPE's will be what I Need (And Probably Burn Down My House in the Process of doing it. LOL!)

Man, It's a Good thing I bought those Rosewill Hercules 1600W PSU's at Newegg a few hours ago because they are Now "Out of Stock" Again!

You sure have to be Quick with the Card in Your Hand (and Know when the Item is available) if You want to get what You need!

EDIT:
Looks Like they have received some in Stock at Amazon Now, I guess Rosewill finally Built enough to ship some out, So I canceled my Order from Newegg and bought the same PSU's at Amazon for $100 LESS!

Alright!, This has turned out to be a GOOD Day for Me!

While waiting for the New PSU's, I was Looking on Ebay and found some 16GB (4 x 4GB) G-Skill Trident X DDR3 2666MHz Memory to replace the 32GB (4 x 8GB) G-Skill Memory I'm using now that hopefully should place less of a burden on the 4930K IMC to get Higher OC's.

Yeah, should be easier on the proc, the 32gb kit I recommended was the kit I used on my Dark, so I know it is solid, but a bit less may very well help for a higher clock.
