You are looking at 500 lines of G-Code to make that 4" or so figure of the Road runner.  It came with the software.  I am trying to learn what all the code means- I know some, but still a long way off.  I threw a dremel bit in it and let it do its thing.

...and now its 7am, and my daughter has no intentions of letting us sleep.

Wow Nate that is nice! Wanna make me one?

I have a funny feeling I may not need that Power Boost.. I think my parents ordered me an E762 from Tigerdirect for my birthday. Cause I got the page up for them and then handed them the laptop and left for the bathroom, came back and they're talking about how a mail in rebate works and credit card info, give me the laptop back and it's on the email.. As if they were checking for an order confirmation.

Didn't even consider the dual monitor problem. Forgot there was that issue with multi monitors not downclocking. Good thing you figured it out.

Re:Get It Colder......2 2010/12/29 15:14:18 (permalink)
How practical is getting a 2 stage cascade? I have been thinking about it #s wise alot. I figure the cpu will be around the same temps as DICE would give (evap at -100, so cpu at -80 to -70 ish), which happens to be my current subzero method. Lets say i can get a really good deal on a cascade, for $900 shipped. Also lets say i spend $10 on dice every time i want to bench with that. I would have to bench with the cascade 90 times to equal out with benching the same # of times with DICE, not including energy draw of the cascade. Now besides $ as a factor. The Cascade would be extremely convienent. For me to get dice, as far as i know the closest place (where i have been going) is 45 minutes away. So that is 1.5 hours round trip. With the cascade, it is right there and i flip a switch, wait for cooldown, and go. Seeing as dice is a pita to get, i don't bench with it very often. With the cascade, i could see myself using it pretty much every weekend. Also, the cascade i could use for any period of time, whereas dice will eventually run out. If i did use it every weekend, it would pay itself off (compared to dice, not including power draw) in approx. 2 years. Here is how i see it:

Cascade
+ convienent
+ similar temps as dice
+ can run pretty much indefinitely
- expensive and high power draw, so even more expense
- noisy

Dice
+ good temps
- not convienent
- can run out
- cheap

Then also for good measure, throw in an SS for comparison.
+ convienent
+ can run pretty much indefinitely
- not nearly as good temps as dice or cascade
- expensive (cheaper than cascade obviously - less initial cost and less power draw)
- noisy

Also, how much power does an SS draw, and how about a 2 stage cascade? Lastly, will that extra say -50*C from an SS to dice or cascade help a ton, like 100+mhz, or not much, like 50mhz? (obviously depends on the chip, but just kinda an overall question i guess) Oh yes, and can i take an SS or Cascade, or even a dice pot for that matter, to college?

So, what is the best option?

If it were my choice I'd go with a SS till you get to college then used DICE or even better Ln2! $900 vs the amount of points you can get with the current hardware is also a factor. Let's say you'd rather go for HW ranking atm hardware points cut off at 300 boints. To get a higher ranking in the HW community you'll need the newest hardware, which isn't cheap.
However if you want hardware points and aren't worried about ranking or global points, than I'd say cascade will be better.
Even with an i7 920 D0 with 1-2 DICE sessions should get you around 100 boints or more easy.
Since your doing most of you benching on the weekends, let's say you buy 20-30lbs of DICE that should be enough for two days worth of benching. If you've done prep benching before the weekend, results should be good.
If you go the cascade route it's $900 off the bat, and then you go to college and may be able to get Ln2 pretty cheap it's kind of a loss cause. I'd rather be @ -192c then -80c .
Also I've found volt modding is a cheaper way to get more points, if you can get a V-modded card on a waterblock you'll be in great shape.

Thanks for all the input, very good stuff.

Ok, actually after figuring out our electric bill, a cascade would barely change the bill at all if i only benched weekends. So the energy bill factor is null. Also, when i go to college, i don't have to pay for dorm energy bills anyways.

Looking at straight boints, i don't care nearly as much about world ranking. I don't really have enough modern hardware to make a push in the individual league. I have lots of s775 stuff to bench, and currently am benching. So i really am looking more for hardware points than global. Anyways, i like benching for the fun of achieving stuff and beating others. The boints are just an easy way to rank that.

As for college, that is a tricky one. I have thought about that alot (ln2). What i am wondering is if i can have easy and cheap access to ln2 at college. If i can, an SS would probably be better (or even just stick with dice even though getting it is a pita). But, if ln2 is not easily accessible and/or not cheap, then a cascade seems to be a much better option.

Also, i have a soldering kit and have tried 1 vmod on an old card, but it doesn't seem to work. But i will probably redo it. So ya, vmodding is great for more boints too.

Dude, if college is anything like it was when I went 25 years ago, you won't have much time for benching, lol!  After studying, your free time will be spent having....lets just say...fun.  And it won't be benching fun...

Save your $900.  You're going to need that money for food and drink....and I ain't talking meal plan food and drink

Oh, and did I mention that chicks don't dig computers?  Don't think about the cascade anymore from this point forward!

What are you engraving there Nate? Can't wait to see some cool projects from this thing.

Not really engraving, but I guess it can be looked at the same way.  I am plunge cutting out the EVGA X58 Micro waterblock.   The bit drops down a bit & cuts the outline out, then drops in deeper & cuts the outline out again repeatedly and you have the part when its done.

It took literally ALL day to hand-jam Over 300 lines of code to make that part, and I still have much more to go.  BUT, learning sooo much as I go.  Its like I can almost SEE the matrix.

Sounds awesome Nateman, you need to get your rig assembled again so I can battle you for 295 ranking.

Btw, I wouldn't worry until you start to see in code like Neo.

Whoa. That is insane Nate. How long would it take to build one of those?
