Yea I have seen the micro block and all its amazingness.  I would like to get into benching I am just to afraid to get my main system into it although I have thought about building a cheaper amd system for it.

but I love reading this it is always fun.

Just bench it on air. I'm stuck on air until the rest of my CPU loop gets here. Just need to decide on a RAD, and then order it and fittings/tubing.

'Course, over summer it'll be different. DICE then, big maybe on LN2, finally gonna own Q's single card score. 980X + 295 on DICE or LN2 is a winning combination.

What would you do then Q? Let's say I benched like this: CPU @ 5400Mhz, RAM @ 2000Mhz, GPU @ 925Mhz/1275Mhz, and put out a MONSTER score on LN2? That'd be fun. In any case, DICE should do for the first few sessions. Then we'll see about LN2. Gotta find some suppliers here, see how much it costs etc. I'm not sure if my mom will let me, she's finally come around to the idea of DICE, all it would take is getting her to let me try it once, then she'd see how it is and stuff. Which means she'd cave.

Then... All that you know is at an end.

Halo the air bencher will be no more.

But right now, this is all talk and no show.

Yes indeed. It sounds cool though.  And I must say, If I ended up being able to use LN2, I'd be HAPPIER THAN A TORNADO IN A TRAILER PARK!!

I believe a while ago I posted about RAM, Like in the first 100 pages. What would you guys recommend? I'm tempted by just going with 2 of these kits and using 3 of the 4 sticks, which would also leave me with an extra, which is ALWAYS good. Even if I can't run them at 2300Mhz, they'd be good for 2000Mhz+ as well. Nice thing about them is if I ever came across a P55 board I could use them to full extent on it.

My current OCZ Gold would be getting a friend, (another 6Gb kit of Gold), and being put into my dad's machine for his 12GB photoshopping stuff.

I know your dilemma.  I originally designed my benching system to be a gaming computer.  Then I got into benching.  Now this machine that cost thousands & thousands just sits here to do 1 hit wonder benching.  Now i have a spare computer (790i/Q6600) to do everything & play games with.  9800GT's do just fine on the games that I play - even across 3 screens.  Then I also bench that to the point it caught fire.  Awesomesauce.

You lucky SOB..

Any thoughts on that RAM? Same price as a 6GB kit of Dominator GT, but it's higher speed. And I get an extra stick.

I don't get real thrilled about RAM...when you're benching a 920, you want something that will hold speeds at your max. blck and mem. divider settings.  So, if you are running blk of 220 with a mem divider of 2:8, your RAM speed will be 1760.  Then if you say I can run a 2:10 multiplier to push the RAM speed past 2000, then you have to consider if your uncore can handle it.  The increase in performance would be minimal anyway.  The cost of getting RAM rated above 2000 far outweighs the benefits, IMHO.

You'd be better off spending the few Benjamin's towards a new CPU.

Isn't it ironic that we can't just "turn on" our systems to do general computing/gaming....they're like Saturn V rockets.  They cost $$$$$$, and you only see them in action when the conditions are just right.

I mean we can't even surf the web cause the dang ethernet is shot from the high pci-e settings, LOL!

Depends entirely what kind of benching you are doing.  for 2d benching the difference in speed and latencies will be drastic but if you are only concerned about 3d benching then just buy yourself some 2000mhz ram so you know you wont be ram limited in your CPU clocks.

SuperPi especially. For 32M you need speed (bandwidth), for 1M you need timings (latency). Wprime\PiFast im not sure how RAM dependent those are.

I dropped my multi on my RAM to 2:6 and my timings to 6-7-7-20, and noticed a boost in 1M, but my 32M was doing a lot worse. .

All GTX 280's support software voltage tuning. There is also a EVT patch to allow more than it normally allows.

this is what i thought as well..but when i kept adding voltage it just got worse. and all i did was go from 1.18 to 1.20

and no voltage adjustment has me up pretty high..3d05. go figure.

With my experience with my 5870, your cooling will be the biggest factor. On stock cooling im not sure how many volts I need for my max OC. I use slightly less than 1.3v, the higher I go, the more unstable it gets.

at this point I really can do anything I want with it.  I installed a thermostat so I can have the chiller running any temp that I want.  I just use the spare cause it doesn't cause brown-outs throughout the neighborhood.

I really was just seeing if the 980 could put the 240 over the top since the 240 does not o/c worth a s***.
Also I don't have a video card that o/c well at all right now.
Seems a lot of the ATI 5000 series suck (at least mine). The only one that worked well was the 5770 that Reggie bought.
Got a MSI lighting 5870 on its way. We'll see how that does.

Just needs a wall separating the outside cylinders and the internal design. I thinking you could keep the majority of the pot at your CBB and the interal at your CB. Then when you have to cold boot, it will heat up quicker. At least in theory.

say nate...dont you have an e series cpu you want to send to your best friend in california??

I actually have an E8400 at my job which I would like to "borrow" and install it in my 790i and see how much I can tear it up.  It is sitting in a dell, so I don't know if it is a good batch, but I'll still rack some sort of points up in the 2d benches.

i think im gonna get a 775 board and a e8600 and just hold on to it for benching purposes.
or
how is the i3 or i5 stacking up???

maybe go that route instead.

also looking at grabbing a 480x, since the 980x isn't making the big jump as i thought it would....probably just wait for the lessor to come out and grab one of those.

the only bench wolfdale still holds on to is 01, i5 and i3 are very strong in 2d benches but they are slower clock for clock compared to bloomfield and gulftown.

gulftown would probably be a better choice since it can do everything but 01, provided you have the right cooling.

johnksss

also looking at grabbing a 480x, since the 980x isn't making the big jump as i thought it would....probably just wait for the lessor to come out and grab one of those.

I read you'll have to wait until the end of the year for that....and it'll be $500....and it's still just a rumor.  Yea, I don't know about the 980x...I'll find out when I get it colder.
