Hi everyone,

I have bought an EVGA GeForce GT 740 Superclocked (01G-P4-3743-KR), but it will only work stable when I enter my BIOS setting and set the PCIe Speed to Gen2 (2.0). My Mobo is an ASUS H87M-PLUS with an Intel Core i5-4460 (Haswell):

Expansion Slots
  • 1 x PCIe 3.0/2.0 x16 (x16 mode, yellow)
  • 1 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (x4 mode, dark brown)
  • 2 x PCI

If I leave that setting as Auto, my graphics card is able to work in Gen3 mode, but rather unstable. In this case, my system will randomly freeze and/or raise that infamous error message: "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered".

Graphics card BIOS version: 80.07.d9.00.40

Any thoughts? Is my hardware defective?

Regards,

LNW

Inwalker welcome to our forums! I would recommend going with the latest BIOS update for your motherboard to see if that has any positive effect using gen3 with your video card. Although PCIe does offer backwards compatibility between 3.0 and 2.0 as far as performance is concerned there is a negligible difference between the two.

Hello,

Interestingly that I had already updated my BIOS before but that didn't make any difference at the time. Now that you suggested the update, I've just had a look at the support page and found out there was a very new update for my BIOS available.

Previously I had:

H87M-PLUS BIOS 2102 - 2014/08/29

and now the new one:

H87M-PLUS BIOS 2103 - 2014/10/28

Right, did the update and so far so good . Actually the system instability was so random that now I need some time to make sure that the problem went away definitely.

I'll update this post to report any news.

EDIT:

I can confirm that this time the BIOS update solved the problem.
My computer is now very stable and problem-free.

Thank you.
