Hello,

This is (kind of) a continuation of my last thread:

My problem from before seemed to resolve itself with a clean installation of Windows 10 and a custom fan curve via Precision X.  Honestly, I'm not sure what resolved the issue I was previously having.  However, now I'm having a new issue.  While playing a game two days ago, my screen suddenly went black, reappeared a few seconds later (with the error message that the game had stopped responding), both fans on the video card completely quit, and neither GeForce Experience nor Precision X seemed to know what video card I had.  That is, when I went into Precision X, it showed "unknown" instead of the GeForce 970 GTX it normally shows and both GeForce Experience and nVidia Control Panel stated they were unable to retrieve my video card information or settings.  This issue seemed to fix itself with a simple computer restart then, but it happened again earlier today while playing a game.

From my perspective, there doesn't seem to be any real reason for this to have happened.  The highest my GPU temperature hit was 49 celsius per Speccy.  I've never messed with anything on my card through Precision X other than setting a custom fan curve.  I've since performed a clean uninstallation of all nVidia drivers in safe mode with DDU, reinstalled the 362.00 drivers, uninstalled GeForce Experience and refrained from using Precision X.  I'm really not sure what to think anymore.  Any advice?

Thanks!

Have you tried the video card in another PC?

This isn't an option for me unfortunately.  My old 660 GTX works fine though.

    Hello,
If possible try to set the card to de-bug mode in the nvidia control panel.  If that fixes your problem, let EVGA tech support know.

    Ummm.....^^^^^

To the OP, could it be a Windows 10 only issue? After a driver/game crash the clocks get wonky until you reboot. Is it the one game or all games that have this issue?

I have no knowledgeable way to contribute any information other than the giant wall of text is quite noticeable. Someone should fix that.

If the screen goes black, and causes the drivers not respond, it's quite possible that unstable clocks are present. Have you tried to downclock your card and see what happens then?

Wall of text removed. When things like this happen, please use the report feature to alert the mods. We can't make it into every single thread throughout the day, so the report feature gives us a heads up something is wrong. Multiple posts stating the same issue will take longer to find and delay the correction.

It also only showed as a few letter on my phone, until I opened the edit screen... Then it took forever to highlight it all, lol.

Thank you for the replies!  To answer the questions:

The only game I've experienced this issue with has been Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition.  However, this may or may not mean anything as I haven't played many other games.  At least not any that I've sunk much time into or played for an extended period of time.  I did put some time into Alien: Isolation and the original Divinity Original Sin (classic version) without any issues but again, nowhere near as much.

I can certainly attempt debug mode and see if it helps.  The original issue I had with the card was seemingly related to the GPU temperatures.  It seemed like it was starting to have issues whenever the card would hit temperatures around 50-60 Celsius.  The issue then seemed to disappear when I reformatted my PC and started new from scratch.  For what it's worth, my last reformat coincided with redoing my cable management slightly and adding an intake fan to the bottom of my case.  There too, my issues primarily happened while playing the Enhanced Edition of Divinity Original Sin, though there were some issues with Wolfenstein: The New Order as well.

As far as down clocking my card, I can look into doing that.  My card is an EVGA Nvidia GeForce 970 GTX SSC ACX 2.0.  Is it normal to down clock a card?  I have zero overclocking experience.  I have never had a need to.  My past two cards (both EVGA), a 660 GTX and a 9800 GT, never had any issues whatsoever despite both being overclocked when I purchased them IIRC.

Downclocking is not in any way "normal". An overclock done by the manufacturer should work regardless. You can underclock if you want to, and not RMA, and just deal with the problem, but the problem will always be there until you decide to do something, or if Nvidia releases some drivers which will work with the overclocked GPU. Don't quote me on this, but normally Nvidia makes the drivers specifically for the reference clocks (If I'm wrong, please correct me.)

    My system specs:

    MB: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
    MB bios version: F2, 7/15/2013
    CPU: AMD FX-8350 Vishera 32nm
    RAM: 16 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 669MHz (9-9-9-24)
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA), Part Number: 04G-P4-3975-KR
    GPU driver version: 10.18.13.6200 (362.00)
    Sound Card: Sound Blaster Z
SSD/HDD: 238 GB Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series
    PSU: Corsair AX760, Model: 75-001304
    PSU Age: ~3 Years

This is pulled from Speccy (minus my PSU).  I have Windows 10 Home 64-bit.  For my video driver, I updated to 365.10 from 364.72 (skipped 364.51) and only downgraded to 362.00 yesterday when I encountered the black screen crash again.  I had experienced the crash before on the 364.72 drivers but thought maybe it was an isolated incident when it happened.  What seemed odd (at least, to me) is that the video driver clearly continued to work because my screen resolution and everything else remained intact, despite my entire system no longer registering my video card until I restarted the computer.  By everything else I mean having the output dynamic range being set to "full."  Whenever I install a new video driver it always resets to the limited option and I have to manually change it back in the control panel.  That probably doesn't mean anything though.

Generally speaking, what causes a black screen crash like that?  Let me know if I may provide anything else that could be helpful.  I really hope I don't have to RMA!  The whole reason I even upgraded my video card was for Doom 4!

Has running in debug mode/underclocking the card fixed the issue? Black screen crashes can be caused by lots of things, unstable video card, unstable overclocks, bad driver, psu not providing sufficient power to gpu, etc.

I haven't underclocked the card, no.  I'll spend some time with it in debug mode and see if it happens again.  Thus far the issue seems entirely random and not something I can immediately reproduce.  I'll be back if I experience it again.  That said, I just want to thank everybody for the help and attempts to understand the issue.  I really appreciate it!

Pretty much off topic but if a GPU starts having trouble at 50-60C, then it is better to bin that waste of money or RMA it.
