On a side note, did you ever get the situation with Crysis Warhead worked out? Sorry if it's old news, I scanned posts but didn't see anything. I have the same issue, but I solved it by going into C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\crysis warhead\Bin64 and sending the Crysis 64 shortcut to my desktop. I can start the game from that icon with no problems. You probably already knew this but I figured I would throw it out there in case someone didn't. Very informative and interesting thread btw, awesome work.

As requested guys here are some results with the resolution set to 5760x1080 all games were run with max settings and 4xAA.

Battlefield Bad Company 2:

Dirt 2:

Just Cause 2:

As you can see at that resolution with 4xAA you can get away with using the 1.5GB cards in multi monitor.

Thanks for running the tests Crap.

From what I can see in those screen shots it looks like my greedy eyeballs are going to be with stuck the single monitor due to my quality over quantity obsession...

I was planning on buying a 3rd card in the not so distant future, but if I'm going to be limited by the VRAM I'm no longer seeing the point. :(

Hopefully EVGA's costumer support department has it In there hearts to allow me to do the StepUp to the 3GB models since I just bought the two cards in April.

Edit:
Just got off the phone with EVGA and because it's a non-reference card they are saying no...

Edit2:
StepUp was the reason I went with EVGA. lol Guess I've learned my lesson.

From looking on eBay the going rate for used GTX 580sc 1.5GB cards is $350-$375. So I'd be looking at about $500 (loss of $300) to upgrade to 2 3GB cards + down time and a another $600 for a 3rd card. In addition to upgrading my monitor setup... If I could afford to go with 3 30" panels I could justify the cost but going to 3 1080/1200 docent make sense dollar wise. Nor dose adding a 3rd 1.5GB card if I'm going to be limited by the frame buffer and have to lose the high AA settings by increasing my resolution...

I was going to ask you to run some tests @2560x1600 but I already know the answer and it's no since metro uses 1330MB with every thing set to max @1920x1080 except for AA being set to AAA instead of 4xMSAA.

I have a source that I can borrow 3x1920x1080 monitors from so I'll have to do some personal testing to see if I can stand the lower AA settings before I finalize my decision on weather or not to go tri-sli/multi-monitor.

Thanks again for running the tests and and your very insightful thread. I know how important and over looked VRAM is. Thank you.

PS: I'm still amazed after reading this thread that 3GB is not the standard amount of VRAM on these cards...

PPS: Sorry for ranting in your thread...

Honestly, you'd be mostly fine with a 1.5GB card while in Surround at 5760x1080. I'd say go pick up some monitors and have a blast. Surround gaming is really taking it to the next level and after playing in multi monitor, there just isn't any going back to a single screen.

As for the memory amount on the standard GTX580. You have to remember that these cards were never "intended" to be run in multi monitor setups. The only reason Nvidia has Surround is to compete with AMD's Eyefinity and they implemented it after Eyefinity was announced. The Fermi GPU was not natively built with multi monitor in mind. That fact that we have it, we can directly thank AMD for forcing their hand

Hey Crap, thanks for all the work that went into this research..I have a quick question. What software are you using to monitor the temps and vram? I have a third 480 and im debating adding it to my loop and doing 3 way..just curious how much memory im using now with 3 28in monitors and settings at max. thanks

Was wondering what are you, Op, using to measure fps and vram usage? I have now two 6970's 2gb and I'm trying to figure out how much vram Crysis2 is taking up at 5760x1080 maxed out and can't find an option on msi afterburner to select for that or are you using Precision? Also would Precision work on AMD cards?

Thanks.

Very Very impressed with your review. Bought 3 x 3GB MSI GTX 580's for Tri SLI. Would of bought the 680's but the used 580's were all I could afford. What program did you use to ascertain the FPS and v ram useage? I am getting 3 x 2460 x 1200 monitors and using Flight Sim X. Being told my rig will tank using 3 x 2460's, cards are a waste of money, and better off using one monitor. Nice to see someone with the guts to push it as far as it can go, and share the data. Side question, would getting 3 x 680's make much difference? FSX is a 6 year old game (sim), and I was told cannot use all the cores of the CPU. Thus a bottleneck getting video data to the 3 cards? Thanks for the great review.
