Well...I cant afford to aim to surround yet.Currently using 1920x1200 IPS,aiming for 2560x1600 IPS.I tested my 8800 Ultra memory usage in EQ2,LOTRO,GuildWars and EVE.From those, only EVE with max settings, used over 756 mb memory (aka 8800 ultra limit). If Metro 2033 is currently biggest memory hugger-will be 580 GTX with 1.5 GB Vram enough for 30" monitor (future SLI)? Sparkle makes GTX 580 with Arctic Cooling Extreme Pro factory installed (thus warranty!).Its way cooler and more silent then all others, except watercooling sets. Also KFA2 or something (former Galaxy) makes 580 GTX with AC Pro preinstalled, but i dont trust brand, and its only avaylable in selected few resellers in UK.Not in Germany, from where i used to webshop components (closer to me+good/better prices, then UK ones).

Hey Crap. So I got a third 580, and guess what, you are so right it isn't even funny. My gains are minimal if any. I guess I'll return the third card. I'm wondering if 2 of these 3GB cards would suffice. I guess I will start there and see what happens.

Did you read the thread? It's not that a 580 can't "power" a 30 inch screen it's that in SOME games you hit a VRAM wall at huge surround resolutions.

Wow. Further testing shows a shockingly small difference between 2 and 3 cards almost accross the board. With my older screens at 5760x1200 going from 2 to 3 480's yeilded rather massive improvements. They only conclusion I can think of is that this res is simply eating the VRAM alive. I guess I'll take the one card back, hock the other two, and get those palit cards.... unless some fun news about the 590 surfaces. I bet even with 2GB it would be a huge difference.

Sorry to hear that gutcheck. But you can't say I didn't tell you so..... As for them being pulled, I'm not sure, they have been deactivated at Newegg. They are sold out everywhere from what I can tell. Looks like they didn't anticipate the huge demand for 3GB cards. Hopefully Palit will get more ready soon. On a side note, have you tried to locate a Gainward Phantom 3GB GTX580?

Good, its within normal GTX580 limits then.I just purchased,(actually last week) Sparkle GTX580 with factory installed Arctic Cooling Extreme Pro.Probably will get it at friday from DHL. As sitting some time at 24" 1920x1200,will be enough for me so far. Also, purchased Thermalright Silver Arrow with Arctic Silver thermal paste and contemporary CPU upgrade from C2D E6600 (at 2,4) to Dual Core E6600 (3.06,and will OC easily on my Striker Extreme,i hope).Aim to 4 Ghz or,something:about 450 FSB,plus that air cooling.I hope, will be enough to feed my GTX580,till Bulldozer/2011 comes out/gets tested.Or 2600K....at 5Ghz (need alot of luck with good CPU core to get multiplier so high, though.

I have to say, thanks for posting these benchmarks. Assisted in my intent to purchase. And, these totally smoke my Crossfire 5970s. I mean, it's just sad having these cards I bought last year for the price of 3 of these same cards and I can't even touch that kind of performance. I'm running 6048x1080 resolution, 980x 4.4ghz, 12gb DDR3 2000mhz. I'm buying two of these from EVGA tomarrow, so thanks. Also I'm selling my 5970s if anyone is interested.

EDIT: Sorry - I saw some very useful info on the first page. Looks like the answer is: It Depends. But I'm very concerned based on what I've seen thus far. It's a shame they even bothered with the 1.5gb version, frankly. From what I can see on Newegg, it's a paltry $40 more for double the memory. Looks like I'm going to unload my 1.5gb versions on eBay. ========================================================================= Hey, sorry if this has already been addressed - but I don't have time to go thru all 177 messages (lame - I know - sorry). Anyway - what is the VRAM usage with more reasonable AA settings at 5760x1200? 4x or 2X AA specifically. I'm in a bit of a quandary - I've got 2 580's, a Maximus IV and a 2600K. I'm an early adopter with regard to "Surround gaming" (had a Matrox TH2Go since '07, then Eyefinity on dual 5870's in '09 - and now this). But I'm just wondering if it wouldn't be smarter to unload the 580's on eBay and go with 3 of the 3gb versions to avoid running out of VRAM. But if I can do 5760x12000 with, say, 4xAA - that's good enough. I'll take the higher FPS associated with a bit lower AA anyway, given the choice. But running without *any* AA is pretty awful in 2011. If that's the case, then no way am I going any further with the 1.5gb 580's I have (and by going further, I mean adding a third for Tri-SLI). TIA guys. Great thread OP... PS - Hehe - just look at that ANCIENT sig I've got! Has it really been *that* long since I've been here?! Man, I spent a lot on that system...3 systems back!

I'm in the same boat as kondor999. It's been about 12 years since I've built a computer let alone a gaming system and it appears that I've biffed it on the graphics cards. Wish that I would have seen this thread before I purchased 2 1.5GB 580's in April. Just happy that I've been holding off on ordering the third one... The two seam to be fine for 1920x1080 though I have seen metro hit 1500MB of VRAM used with every thing maxed out so I've been running AAA instead of MSAA to bring the VRAM usage down to around a peek of 1330MB. I found this article by looking for info on 2560x1600, 1920x1080/1200, and 7680x1600 gaming to decide on if I was going to up grade my monitor to a 30" or 3x1080/1200 panels. Thanks for the info one of these days I'll get it right... I hope... PS: After reading through this thread I feel as if Nvidia dropped the ball on the VRAM with it being 1.5GB stock when it seems to me as if there pushing 3D/surround/3D surround gaming.

If you guys want I can lower the resolution to 5760x1080 and re run some of the games with lower AA levels. That's not a big deal. But I will say this to you folks. I used to have 3 GTX480s and with them I was running 3 1920x1080 monitors for a surround resolution of 6000x1080 (with bezel correction) and for the most part my games were fine with the 1.5GB VRAM the GTX480's had. Anyway, I'll go ahead a rerun some of the tests with lower resolution and more moderate AA levels to give a more mainstream idea of VRAM usages with Surround. I'll have the results up later this evening guys
