Hi Guys, I'm in need of some serious help with my new GTX 980. Here are my PC specs first of all: CPU: Intel I7 3930k OCed @4.4 ghz, 1.32 vcore GPU: EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked. Motherboard: Asrock x79 extreme11 Ram: 16 gb @1600mhz PSU: Corsair 1200ax gold-rated OS: Windows 7 64-bit home I think those are the pertinent specs. Now, the problem. The card will not pass either the Metro 2033 Redux benchmark or the Metro Last Light Redux benchmark. During the benchmark, the screen goes black, and I get display driver ___ (have tried several versions) has stopped responding and has recovered. I have tried setting Physx to CPU with same result, it fails both benchmarks. I tried the games, they crash within seconds of actually moving the character. Previous to this card I had a GTX 690. I swapped the cards out and the 690 runs the benchmarks perfectly with no crashing, so I do not believe it to be a system stability issue. I have been trying various fixes for days, with no avail. Previous to the superclocked, I had the gigabyte GTX 980, which tech support determined was defective and advised an RMA back to amazon, which i did. I went with the EVGA thinking it would be a better card, but to no avail. Can you guys please help me? I'm at my wits end here, and really am not sure what to do at this point. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you guys very much for your time.

Take your CPU overclock back down to default and re-run the test. Sometimes putting in a stronger GPU requires some fiddling with the CPU overclock.

Have you tried a slight downclock? I experienced similar issues with Dragon Age Inquisition and my SLI GTX 980 FTW cards. I simply downclocked the boost to -50 and they are rock solid and stable. I'm going to call EVGA tomorrow and see what they want me to do (Since my cards will not operate at advertised boost speeds.)

would hitting the "Load UEFI defaults button" in the Bios reset the cpu to stock settings? just wanna make sure before i do anything drastic. thanks for the advice, if anyone has anymore, please keep it coming. I'll also try installing the evga oc software and downclocking the card, will let you know what happens.

Yes, or you can remove the battery for 10 or 15 minutes. Do you still have your GTX 690 Graphics Cards? if so can you remove your 980 card and install your 690 card to test. How did you install your new 980 card? Did you remove the current driver before you removed and then installed the new. Did you remove the current card and install the new as is? If so did you disable SLI on the Driver before you removed the 690 card and installed the 980?

Funny, only because I replaced my 690's with 980's on my ASUS X79 rig and could not get SLI to work correctly. I am putting together an X99 rig to hopefully correct this SLI problem.

Is you're system overclocked with multiplier only? If you used bclk it could be causing issues.

yep, blck is 100 just ran metro last light redux with the brand new drivers, it completes one run, but crashes on the second. Have never even seen it complete one run though, so i suppose its progress of a sort... i'll try downclocking the card next. I'm a little reluctant to mess with my OC as it took a while for it to achieve stability. The x79 Mobos are supposed to work with these 980s correct?

sorry i breezed over your other qestions bc, I used DDU (display driver uninstaller) to completely wipe the drivers out previous to installing the 980. I did not disable SLI, but with DDU sweeping any and all remains of the drivers out of the pc, i doubt it contributes to the issue.

update: with the newest drivers (released today, 347.25) MM Last Light Redux passes all three benchmark loops with advanced phsyX set to "off" Previous to this driver update, setting advanced physx to off did not allow the benchmark to complete. So the newest driver seems to have at least fixed something (admittedly i only ran one benchmark loop), i should run a few more. So at this point, it seems the issue may have to do with the advanced PhysX setting. Maybe it's currently broken on the 900 series? anyone have any thougts?

another update for anyone who may be able to help me: MMLL Redux benchmark now runs flawlessly as long as I have "Advanced PhsyX" turned off in the benchmark utility. It passes without advanced physx, fails with Advanced Phsyx. At this point it definitely seems to be some type of Physx bug.

Sounds to me like the card can't handle it's rated speed clock and is crashing. Underclock the video card by at least a couple 100 Mhz and re-test. ( if it's 1241 core clock put it on 1100 or so )

Yeah I don't think there should be any reason that it wouldn't be able (or wasn't supposed to be able to) handle Advanced PhysX. Not that my vote may count for much, but I think its either a driver issue (drives not completely uninstalling when new ones are installed) or its the card itself.

Steve B - That's exactly what mine was doing (Was not stable at stock speeds and would hard crash in dragon age inquisition) However i noticed many people are reporting this game is hard crashing their 970s and 980s. After a lot of testing i was also getting crashing in Borderlands Pre-seq, Far cry 4, and even once at the desktop. I decided to RMA.

Hello fellow user, Its the drivers for Nvidia. I had the 760 dual cards with same driver the newest driver. 347.09. No crashes at all. I bought the 980 and nothing but crashes. I let windows use its generic driver which doesn't help if you want to play Far Cry4 but it did not crash at all until I installed the NVidia driver. They need to fix this. I talked to them and they said it was 8.1 but you were using 7-64bit. They just do not want to take the blame. I have tried different versions to no avail. NVIDIA you need to fix this $600 for a card that crashes is crap. I believe its the 3D driver crashing. I used Windows to install just the video and it took weeks to crash but with a reboot it found the 3 d driver and loaded it. It is definitely Their fault. They need more testing before they dump it on the public. What I highlighted says it all. NVIDIA FIX THIS. I have uploaded my specs but X99 Sli Plus 56 gigs ram 8 drives 3 ssd drives 980 GTX Ibuypower case Cost me a pretty penny for Nvidia to be slacking like this. I always buy Nvidia but if they don't fix this soon going over to ATI or AMD now. Hopes this helps keep you from hours of trouble shooting when its their developers or management that forced this card out too soon.

Just one other thing mine is not overclocked at all. Base settings. To the guy who wants factory default there is a setting in the bios for factory default if you don't see it look on line for PDF specs should be a jumper on the board to reset. Also when it crashed look in system logs this gives you a clue to the issue and its drivers.
