Hey there,

I bought a classified 980 a few days ago and tried to oc it for some time now. I'm currently only running on air, but thought i could get at least a stable 1500mhz+ oc for gaming. I'm pretty disappointed though because even on default it seems that the card bugs the driver out by itself sometimes. When I tab out to my desktop the cards seems to toggle its power saving mode and going back to my game the voltage seems to not up fast enough for the core clock, resulting in a driver crash. Is there any fix for this or custom bios?

Thanks so far.

    Hey stxfreak,

I got a similar rig and having a lot of issues with OCing. I've also got a post in the overclocking section so if someone is able to give me some good advice i'll pass it on. what games are you playing when it crashes? I'll try it out and see if the crash happens to me. I haven't had a crashing problem unless i'm running ubisoft games that really don't like overlays while there games are running.

I only played diablo 3 and heroes of the storm by now, diablo 3 even as a not so heavy gpu usage game crashes while on +120 mhz. fire strike with +120 and +450 on vram is running without artifacts, getting me a solid ~12500 score with my i5-4690k on 4,5 ghz.

lol my cards in sli can only get +70 mhz on the core. do u have 1 or 2 cards? does your voltage adjust when you adjust it?

I only got one of them, still not sure if the 130€+ were worth the card. somehow I'm sad that I didnt wait for the kinpgin, just because the bios support etc. will be alot less significant for the classy. I also put a backplate on it and am quite happy with looks and sound of the card, just not the overclocking that i intended to do. precision x seems to work a lot worse than msi afterburner, on ab my fire strike runs went smooth, on precision x the voltage probably didnt adjust as I set it resulting in an immediate crash at the beginning of fire strike.

yeah, I just got artifacts at 120/500 and didnt know if it was the vram oc or the core oc :/

#edit: not, I'm quite new to the whole overclocking. Dont got a voltmeter or evbot or anything like that. it just seems that it worked on msi ab because there were no immediate crashes like on precision x.

LOL you should adjust one at a time core then vram then both together. I'm really disappointed in these cards, should have just got 2 x 980 FTW, which has basically the same over clock for $100 less. I'm gonna try and replace them for ASUS 980 G1 cards as these are garbage for the price. Over clocking is dreadful because precisionX software is broken.

yeah I know, did that first. everything went fine until 120 mhz on core and 500 on vram ;). I'm currently looking into modding the bios to get a better overvolt. may increase the stability. I'm happy with the default clock though, stable 1417mhz is quite okay (not for the price though if you wont even reach 1500).

Yeah I want to water cool mine but i'm worried about installing a custom bios. I wish precision x or afterburner voltage adjuster worked so I can just do my own oc. Anyways I just spoke to newegg and they gave me store credit, so i'm returning mine.

255 killer thats great but didn't feel comfortable using a custom bios and risk voiding my warranty, but whatever. IMO should have came with a bios that had a voltage adjust upto 1.3v, hence the reason for the RMA. Anyways did either one of u need a backplate as I have 2 which are been used as door stopper?

Well when I called them 2 days ago they said it could void the warranty, so if you can give me something from evga that would be great. how did you create the bios? maybe you can share it with stxfreak. I wish I spoke to you yesterday because I just sent mine back 3 hrs ago.

They won't tell you that it's ok to flash a custom bios. They will warranty the card as long as it's in original form. If something goes wrong flash back to original bios and send it in. If it goes horriblely wrong and the card is died guess what they can't do? Check the card.

Shaun just to let you know. The custom bios was to adjust the voltage, power table and fan curve not to Unlock voltage. Precious x doesn't read the correct voltage hence why use a multimeter.

    Hey there,

I'm currently not home that's why I'm not responding. I will be back next Friday and am really looking into flashing a custom bios. Problem is that I never did that before but I would like to get into it as it seems that the power adjustment is needed for this card to reach its real potential. 255killer, thanks for the link and your results so far, can you give me some informations about how to flash and what you changed on there to understand all that stuff a bit better? And is your overclock stable in games?
    Thanks!

Yeah man, I learned with the 780 Classified that it's not worth buying them if you're not going to watercool them. I mean, if you want a guaranteed higher overclock, that's cool, but you'll get the same, if not more, from a vanilla card usually. That's been my experience with the last few generations of cards (again, unless you watercool.)

My buddy bought a 980 Classy and my vanilla card overclocks higher than his on air. His will be under water soon, however, and with a modded bios he'll far surpass me for sure lol.

    Hey stx,
The Bios is game stable. However the picture I sent was for example that software doesn't display correct voltage. 1.3v would be on the high side for gaming. With this bios I can game at around 1552 @ 1.248 volts, which I would say is safe for gaming. When you return home let me know I will give you a step by step on how to flash the card.

Sweet, that would really erase all my concerns with this card. Did it fix the driver crashes you had before without the mod, or didn't you have them either way? I think the problem lays in the power profiles as it does not get enough to power the overclock. If I get a stable 1550 core on air I would be happy. Do you still need to enable kboost all time, or just stock settings?

With the vanilla cards, you can sometimes overclock higher with a lower vcore because of voltage limitations, but I'm sure that's different for your Classy card. I run @ 1540 Core, 7.6ghz Mem at 1250mv. My friend's Classy does a good +300 more on the ram, but his core clock seems weaker.

I'm home now and am looking forward to do this stuff tomorrow if you got some spare time. I currently am trying to runa 1550 mhz overclock with an adjusted fan curve to keep it below 62 degree as someone stated the card will throttle vcore at that point. will see if its stable, at least its loud :D

I want to clear up a few things about custom BIOSes and warranty.  The 980 Classified has three BIOS options.  As long as you leave one of them stock (preferably the first one, for simplicity's sake), you can comfortably flash the BIOS to any custom BIOS and it will remain in warranty.  If you flash all the BIOS chips on the card, that could void your warranty.  If it's an official EVGA BIOS for some sort of fix or improvement (which doesn't happen often), that should not create warranty problems.

Re: GTX 980 classified bios 2015/03/21 02:52:36 (permalink)
After deciding not to take the path last weekend it annoys me to hell that i cant even put up +80mhz and go to dekstop out of bf4 and get a driver crash. Is this something that really is an issue with the cards possibility to overclock? heck I even get these errors on stock clock. I really would like to let the card at least run at 1550mhz, but at current state it seems impossible. I would be glad for an update how to flash it, do i need to clear the drivers, save my bios, flash via nvflash and reinstall drivers then? will there be a bios overclock inside the bios or do i still need to oc via precision x? will I be able to hold the overvolt with air cooling, do I need to adjust the fan curve to keep it from throttling? thanks!"
